    Micromachining of buried micro channels in silicon

    A new method for the fabrication of micro structures for fluidic applications, such as channels, cavities, and connector holes in the bulk of silicon wafers, called buried channel technology (BCT), is presented in this paper. The micro structures are constructed by trench etching, coating of the sidewalls of the trench, removal of the coating at the bottom of the trench, and etching into the bulk of the silicon substrate. The structures can be sealed by deposition of a suitable layer that closes the trench. BCT is a process that can be used to fabricate complete micro channels in a single wafer with only one lithographic mask and processing on one side of the wafer, without the need for assembly and bonding. The process leaves a substrate surface with little topography, which easily allows further processing, such as the integration of electronic circuits or solid-state sensors.     A First Step Towards Automatically Building Network Representations

    To fully harness Grids, users or middlewares must have some knowledge on the topology of the platform interconnection network. As such knowledge is usually not available, one must uses tools which automatically build a topological network model through some measurements. In this article, we define a methodology to assess the quality of these network model building tools, and we apply this methodology to representatives of the main classes of model builders and to two new algorithms. We show that none of the main existing techniques build models that enable to accurately predict the running time of simple application kernels for actual platforms. However some of the new algorithms we propose give excellent results in a wide range of situations

    Finitely presented wreath products and double coset decompositions

    We characterize which permutational wreath products W^(X)\rtimes G are finitely presented. This occurs if and only if G and W are finitely presented, G acts on X with finitely generated stabilizers, and with finitely many orbits on the cartesian square X^2. On the one hand, this extends a result of G. Baumslag about standard wreath products; on the other hand, this provides nontrivial examples of finitely presented groups. For instance, we obtain two quasi-isometric finitely presented groups, one of which is torsion-free and the other has an infinite torsion subgroup. Motivated by the characterization above, we discuss the following question: which finitely generated groups can have a finitely generated subgroup with finitely many double cosets?     A polymorphism in the glucocorticoid receptor gene may be associated with and increased sensitivity to glucocorticoids in vivo

    We investigated whether a polymorphism at nucleotide position 1220, resulting in an asparagine-to-serine change at codon 363 in the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene is associated with an altered sensitivity to glucocorticoids. In a group of 216 elderly persons, 13 heterozygotes for the N363S polymorphism were identified by PCR/single strand conformation polymorphism analysis. In 2 dexamethasone (DEX) suppression tests (DSTs), using 1 and 0.25 mg DEX, the circulating cortisol and insulin concentrations were compared between N363S carriers and controls. In the 1-mg DST, there were no differences between N363S carriers and controls, with respect to adrenal suppression, but there was a significantly higher (P < 0.05) insulin response in N363S carriers. In the 0.25-mg DST, a significantly larger (P < 0.05) cortisol suppression and higher (P < 0.05) insulin response were seen in N363S carriers. Comparison of blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and bone mineral density (BMD) between the N363S carriers and controls showed that N363S carriers had a higher (P < 0.05) BMI but normal blood pressure. There was an obvious trend towards lower age-, BMI-, and sex-adjusted BMD in the lumbar spine in N363S carriers. GR characteristics measured in 41 controls and 9 N363S carriers in peripheral mononuclear leucocytes showed no differences between N363S carriers and controls, with respect to GR number and ligand binding affinity. However, there was a trend towards greater sensitivity to DEX in the carriers' lymphocytes, in a mitogen-induced cell proliferation assay. In transfection assays, the capacity of the codon 363 variant to activate mouse mammary tumor virus promotor-mediated transcription in COS-1 cells was unaltered, when compared with the wild-type GR. We conclude that in 6.0% of our study population, a polymorphism in codon 363 of the GR gene was found. Individuals carrying this polymorphism seemed healthy at clinical examination but had a higher sensitivity to exogenously administered glucocorticoids, with respect to both cortisol suppression and insulin response. Life-long exposure to the mutated allele may be accompanied by an increased BMI and a lowered BMD in the lumbar spine but does not affect blood pressure

    Teacher Ratings of Children's Behavior Problems and Functional Impairment Across Gender and Ethnicity:Construct Equivalence of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire

    The present study examined construct equivalence of the teacher Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and compared mean scores in an ethnically diverse sample of children living in the Netherlands. Elementary schoolteachers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for 2,185 children aged 6 to 10 years of the four largest ethnic groups in the Netherlands, namely native Dutch (n = 684) and Moroccan (n = 702), Turkish (n = 434), and Surinamese (n = 365) immigrant children. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis suggested the factor structure of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire to be invariant across children's ethnicity and gender. Additionally, the factor structure appeared to be similar for Dutch and Surinamese teachers. However, mean scores on emotional problems, hyperactivity, conduct problems, prosocial behavior, and impairment varied significantly according to ethnicity and gender. Mean scores on peer problems differed significantly for boys and girls, but not across ethnicity. Whether mean differences reflect a method bias or actual differences in classroom behaviors is discussed and needs further research

    A Study of Cosmic Ray Secondaries Induced by the Mir Space Station Using AMS-01

    The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the 100MeV\sim 100 \mathrm{MeV} to 1TeV1 \mathrm{TeV} range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected 10810^8 cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space station using secondary π\pi^- and μ\mu^- emissions from primary cosmic rays interacting with \emph{Mir}. This is the first time this reconstruction was performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential backgrounds during the 3 year AMS-02 mission.Comment: To be submitted to NIM B Added material requested by referee.     Energy Flow in the Hadronic Final State of Diffractive and Non-Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic epep scattering, in which a sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general tendencies of the data but in all give a worse description.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 6 Figures appended as uuencoded fil

    A measurement of the cosmic ray positron fraction e+/(e+ + e-) in the energy range of 1-30 GeV is presented. The measurement is based on data taken by the AMS-01 experiment during its 10 day Space Shuttle flight in June 1998. A proton background suppression on the order of 10^6 is reached by identifying converted bremsstrahlung photons emitted from positrons
