Detecting time-fragmented cache attacks against AES using Performance Monitoring Counters
Cache timing attacks use shared caches in multi-core processors as side
channels to extract information from victim processes. These attacks are
particularly dangerous in cloud infrastructures, in which the deployed
countermeasures cause collateral effects in terms of performance loss and
increase in energy consumption. We propose to monitor the victim process using
an independent monitoring (detector) process, that continuously measures
selected Performance Monitoring Counters (PMC) to detect the presence of an
attack. Ad-hoc countermeasures can be applied only when such a risky situation
arises. In our case, the victim process is the AES encryption algorithm and the
attack is performed by means of random encryption requests. We demonstrate that
PMCs are a feasible tool to detect the attack and that sampling PMCs at high
frequencies is worse than sampling at lower frequencies in terms of detection
capabilities, particularly when the attack is fragmented in time to try to be
hidden from detection
Maximizing flow rate in single paper layer, rapid flow microfluidic paper-based analytical devices
UNLABELLED: Small, single-layer microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) offer potential for a range of point-of-care applications; however, they have been limited to low flow rates. Here, we investigate the role of laser cutting paper channels in maximizing flow rate in small profile devices with limited fluid volumes. We demonstrate that branching, laser-cut grooves can provide a 59.23-73.98% improvement in flow rate over a single cut, and a 435% increase over paper alone. These design considerations can be applied to more complex microfluidic devices with the aim of increasing the flow rate, and could be used in stand-alone channels for self-pumping.

Solar and biomass hybridization through hydrothermal carbonization
Hydrothermal carbonization process can transform wet bio-wastes into value-added products. This work aims to hybridize a concentrating solar technology and a biomass reactor for the continuous and sustainable valorization of biomass. The novel technology proposed integrates a linear beam-down solar field with a twin-screw reactor for continuous HTC process. The solar field consists of two reflections that concentrate linearly the sun energy on the ground, where the twin-screw reactor is placed. A mathematical model is proposed to solve both the heat transfer and HTC kinetics for a co-rotating twin-screw reactor. The incoming heat flux from the solar field (8-20 kW/m(2)), the reactor length (L/D = 30-60 where D is the diameter) and the rotating velocity of the screw (25-100 rpm) are the main variables used to process the biomass up to the desired severity factor. The simulation results of different lignocellulosic biomasses (loblolly pine, sugarcane bagasse, corn stover and rice husk) are validated against literature data. The developed model shows good agreement with experimental results shown in the literature. The proposed technology foresees hydrochar yields of 64-78% for severity factors of 4.2 and 5.3, respectively, in agreement to the experimental results of 63-70% shown in literature. Impact of individual-level social capital on quality of life among AIDS patients in China.
With growing recognition of the social determinants of health, social capital is an increasingly important construct in international health. However, the application of social capital discourse in response to HIV infection remains preliminary. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of social capital on quality of life (QoL) among adult patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A convenient sample of 283 patients receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) was investigated in Anhui province, China. QoL data were collected using the Medical Outcomes Study HIV Survey (MOS-HIV) questionnaire. Social capital was measured using a self-developed questionnaire. Logistic regression models were used to explore associations between social capital and QoL. The study sample had a mean physical health summary (PHS) score of 50.13 ± 9.90 and a mean mental health summary (MHS) score of 41.64 ± 11.68. Cronbach's α coefficients of the five multi-item scales of social capital ranged from 0.44 to 0.79. When other variables were controlled for, lower individual levels of reciprocity and trust were associated with a greater likelihood of having a poor PHS score (odds ratio [OR] =2.02) or PHS score (OR=6.90). Additionally, the factors of social support and social networks and ties were associated positively with MHS score (OR=2.30, OR=4.17, respectively). This is the first report to explore the effects of social capital on QoL of AIDS patients in China. The results indicate that social capital is a promising avenue for developing strategies to improve the QoL of AIDS patients in China, suggesting that the contribution of social capital should be fully exploited, especially with enhancement of QoL through social participation. Factors that affect quality of life among people living with HIV attending an urban clinic in Uganda: A cohort study

Introduction: With the availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and primary general care for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in resource limited settings, PLHIV are living longer, and HIV has been transformed into a chronic illness. People are diagnosed and started on treatment when they are relatively well. Although ART results in clinical improvement, the ultimate goal of treatment is full physical functioning and general well-being, with a focus on quality of life rather than clinical outcomes. However, there has been little research on the relationship of specific factors to quality of life in PLHIV. The objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with quality of life among PLHIV in Uganda receiving basic care and those on ART. Methods: We enrolled 1274 patients attending an HIV outpatient clinic into a prospective cohort study. Of these, 640 received ART. All were followed up at 3 and 6 months. Health related quality of life was assessed with the MOS-HIV Health Survey and the Global Person Generated Index (GPGI). Multivariate linear regression and logistic regression with generalized estimating equations were used to examine the relationship of social behavioral and disease factors with Physical Health Summary (PHS) score, Mental Health Summary (MHS) score, and GPGI. Urinary metals and metal mixtures and oxidative stress biomarkers in an adult population from Spain: The Hortega Study
INTRODUCTION: Few studies have investigated the role of exposure to metals and metal mixtures on oxidative stress in the general population. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the cross-sectional association of urinary metal and metal mixtures with urinary oxidative stress biomarkers, including oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio (GSSG/GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 8‑oxo‑7,8‑dihydroguanine (8-oxo-dG), in a representative sample of a general population from Spain (Hortega Study). METHODS: Urine antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and zinc (Zn) were measured by ICPMS in 1440 Hortega Study participants. RESULTS: The geometric mean ratios (GMRs) of GSSG/GSH comparing the 80th to the 20th percentiles of metal distributions were 1.15 (95% confidence intervals [95% CI]: 1.03-1.27) for Mo, 1.17 (1.05-1.31) for Ba, 1.23 (1.04-1.46) for Cr and 1.18 (1.00-1.40) for V. For MDA, the corresponding GMRs (95% CI) were 1.13 (1.03-1.24) for Zn and 1.12 (1.02-1.23) for Cd. In 8-oxo-dG models, the corresponding GMR (95% CI) were 1.12 (1.01-1.23) for Zn and 1.09 (0.99-1.20) for Cd. Cr for GSSG/GSH and Zn for MDA and 8-oxo-dG drove most of the observed associations. Principal component (PC) 1 (largely reflecting non-essential metals) was positively associated with GSSG/GSH. The association of PC2 (largely reflecting essential metals) was positive for GSSG/GSH but inverse for MDA. CONCLUSIONS: Urine Ba, Cd, Cr, Mo, V and Zn were positively associated with oxidative stress measures at metal exposure levels relevant for the general population. The potential health consequences of environmental, including nutritional, exposure to these metals warrants further investigation
Ultrasound-assisted extraction of volatile compounds from wine samples: Optimisation of the method.
This study describes a liquid-liquid extraction technique for extracting volatile compounds from wine using dichloromethane and ultrasounds. This technique permits the simultaneous extraction of different samples with high reproducibility. After the preliminary tests, several parameters (sample volume, solvent volume and extraction time) were optimised using a factorial design to obtain the most relevant variables. The analytical characteristics were obtained such as calibration graphs, detection limits ranging from 0.0238 mg L-1 for 1-pentanol to 0.261 mg L-1 for octanoic acid, quantification limits and relative standard deviation from 2.1 to 6.2%. Extraction yields were calculated giving a range 9.16-1.2%. The optimised conditions were applied to the extraction of samples of young wines from the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja category using gas chromatography and a flame ionisation detector. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Arsenic, cadmium, and selenium exposures and bone mineral density-related endpoints: The HORTEGA study
Background and objectives: Experimental data suggest that trace elements, such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and selenium (Se) can influence the bone remodeling process. We evaluated the cross-sectional association betweenAs, Cd, and Se biomarkers with bone mineral density (BMD) measured at the calcaneus, in a representativesample of a general population from Spain. As secondary analyses we evaluated the associations of interest in subgroups defined by well-established BMD determinants, and also conducted prospective analysis of osteoporosis-related incident bone fractures restricted to participants older than 50 years-old.
Methods: In N = 1365 Hortega Study participants >20 years-old, urine As and Cd were measured by inductively coupled-plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS); plasma Se was measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with graphite furnace; and BMD at the calcaneus was measured using the Peripheral Instaneuous X-ray Imaging system (PIXI). As levels were corrected for arsenobetaine (Asb) to account for inorganic As exposure.
Results: The median of total urine As, Asb-corrected urine As, urine Cd, and plasma Se was 61.3, 6.53 and 0.39 μg/g creatinine, and 84.9 μg/L, respectively. In cross-sectional analysis, urine As and Cd were not associated with reduced BMD (T-score < -1 SD). We observed a non-linear dose-response of Se and reduced BMD, showing an inverse association below ~105 μg/L, which became increasingly positive above ~105 μg/L. The evaluated subgroups did not show differential associations. In prospective analysis, while we also observed a U-shape doseresponse of Se with the incidence of osteoporosis-related bone fractures, the positive association above ~105 μg/L was markedly stronger, compared to the cross-sectional analysis.
Conclusions: Our results support that Se, but not As and Cd, was associated to BMD-related disease. The association of Se and BMD-related disease was non-linear, including a strong positive association with osteoporosisrelated bone fractures risk at the higher Se exposure range.
