Productivity and Land Use Efficiency of Wheat-Lentil Inter-cropping under Two Tillage Practices

ከጊዜ ወደ ጊዜ እየጨመረ የመጣውን ህዝብ ለመመገብ በአንድ የእርሻ ማሳ ላይ ምርታማነትን ማሳደግ በጣም አስፈለጊ ነው፡፡ ስለሆነም ሰብልን አሰባጥሮ መዝራት ምርትን ለማሳደግ ተስፋ ሰጪ ሥርዓት ተደርጎ ይወሰዳል በተጨማሪም ምርታማነትን እና የመሬት አጠቃቀምን ውጤታማ ያደርጋል፡፡ የስንዴ እና ምስር የተለያዩ የሰብል ስብጥር በስንዴ እና በምስር ምርታማነት እና የመሬት አጠቃቀም ውጤታማነት በሁለት የእርሻ አስተራረስ ዘዴ ለመገምገም በምንጃር ወረዳ እ.ኤ.አ. ከ 2015-2017 ባለው የሰብል ምርት ወቅት የመስክ ጥናት ተካሂዷል፡፡ ምርምሩ የተካሄደዉ እስፕሊት ፕሎት በተባለ ዲዘይን ሲሆን እያንዳንዱ ትሪትመንት ሶስት ጊዜ ተደጋግሟል፡፡ ትሪትመንቶቹ ያካተቱት ሁለት የአስተራረስ ዘዴ (ባህላዊ እና ዝቅተኛ) በዋና ፕሎት ላይ ሲዉሉ አምስት የስንዴ እና ምስር ስብጥር አዘራር ዘዴ(1፡0፤1፡1፤2፡1፤1፡2 እና 0፡1) ደግሞ በንዑስ ፕሎት ላይ በማድረግ ነዉ፡፡ የሙከራዉ ዉጤት እንዳሳየዉ በስንዴ እና ምስር የእድገት መለኪያዎች ላይ ጉልህ ተፅኖ አልነበረዉም፡፡ የአስተራረስ ዘዴዎችም በስንዴ ምርታማነት ላይ የጎላ ተፅኖ አልነበረዉም ነገር ግን በምስር ምርታማነት ላይ የጎላ ተፅኖ ነበረዉ፡፡ ከፍተኛ የምስር ምርት (1546 ኪ.ግ/ሄ.ክ) የተገኘዉ ከዝቅተኛ የአስተራረስ ዘዴ ሲነፃፀር የባሕላዊ አስተራረስ ዘዴ የተሸለ ምርት አስገኝቷል፡፡ በስብጥር አዘራር ዘዴ በሁለቱም ሰብሎች ላይ የጎላ ተፅኖ ነበረዉ፡፡ ከፍተኛ የስንዴ ምርት (2932 እና 2982 ኪ.ግ/ሄ.ር) የተገኘዉ ስንዴ ብቻውን ሲዘራ (1፡0) እና 2፡1 ስንዴ እና ምስር ስብጥር ነዉ፡፡ ይሁን እንጂ አሰባጥሮ መዝራት የምስር ምርት እንደሚቀንሰው ጥናቶ ያሳያል፡፡ ከስብጥር አዘራር ዘዴ መካከል 2፡1 ስንዴ-ምስር ስብጥር ከፍተኛ የመሬት አጠቃቀም፤የመሬትና የጊዜ አጠቃቀም እንዲሁም የገንዘብ ጥቅም አስገኝቷል፡፡ ስለሆነም 2፡1 ስንዴ-ምስር ስብጥር ለስንዴ እና ምስር በስብጥር የማምረት ዘዴ ምቹ መሆኑን ጥናቱ አረጋግጧል፡፡
Abstract
To feed the ever-increasing population, increase productivity per unit area is one of the most attractive strategies. Intercropping is considered a promising system for increasing crop productivity and land-use efficiency. A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different crop combinations of wheat-lentil on the productivity of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and lentil (Lens culinaris) and land-use efficiency under two tillage practices in Minjar district during 2015-2017 cropping seasons. The experiment was carried out using split-plot design with three replications. The treatments consisted of two tillage practices (conventional and minimum tillage) assigned as the main plot and five wheat-lentil intercropping combinations (1:0, 1:1, 2:1, 1:2 and 0:1) assigned as the subplot. The tillage practices and intercropping had a significant effect on the growth parameters of wheat and lentil. Minimum tillage increased growth parameters for wheat, but reduced growth parameters for lentil. The yield of wheat was non-significantly affected by tillage practices, but the yield of lentils was significantly affected by tillage systems. A higher yield of lentil (1546 kgha-1) was obtained in conventional tillage as compared to minimum tillage practices. Intercropping combination had a significant effect on both the growth and yield parameters of both crops. The highest yield of wheat (2932 and 2982 kgha-1) was recorded in sole wheat (1:0) and 2:1 wheat-lentil combination, while the highest yield of lentil (1575 kgha-1) was obtained in sole lentil (0:1). Among intercropping combinations, 2:1 wheat-lentil gave the highest LER, ATER, and MAI values. Therefore, 2:1 wheat-lentil intercropping combinations were found suitable for higher productivity and production of component crops, and the intercropping system of wheat-lentil in any of the combinations found to be more profitable and productive compared to sole wheat and lentil
Intention to Use Maternal Waiting Homes and Related Factors among Pregnant Women in Metu Woreda, Western Ethiopia
Background: Maternity Waiting Homes are houses built in the healthcare settings that lodge pregnant women in their term state of pregnancy to prevent labor and delivery-related complication. This study aimed to estimate the extent of pregnant women’s intention to use Maternal Waiting Homes and identify its associated factors in Metu Woreda, Western Ethiopia.
Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 1-30, 2018. We used a systematic sampling method to select the study participants and Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with the intention of the women to use Maternal Waiting Homes.
Results: A total of (97%) of respondents’ questionnaires were found complete and analyzed for this study. Almost half (48.8%) of the pregnant women who participated in the study were planned to use Maternal Waiting Homes in their prospective delivery. Based on multivariate logistic regression analysis; being illiterate and/or less educated in their educational status, having a history of using Maternal Waiting homes, and receiving a number of times antenatal care services were found statistically significantly associated with intention of the women to use Maternal Waiting Homes.
Conclusion: It is trivial that more than half of the pregnant women who participated in the study were unintended to use Maternal Waiting Homes. Educational status, a number of times attending antenatal care services and experience of using Maternal Waiting Homes were found statistically significantly associated with women’s intention to use Maternal Waiting Homes

What happens to ART-eligible patients who do not start ART? Dropout between screening and ART initiation: a cohort study in Karonga, Malawi
BACKGROUND: Routine ART programme statistics generally only provide information about individuals who start treatment. We aimed to investigate the outcome of those who are eligible but do not start ART in the Malawi programme, factors associated with this dropout, and reasons for not starting treatment, in a prospective cohort study. METHODS: Individuals having a first screening visit at the ART clinic at Karonga District Hospital, northern Malawi, between September 2005 and July 2006 were interviewed. Study follow-up to identify treatment outcomes was conducted at the clinic and in the community. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with dropout before ART initiation among participants identified as clinically eligible for ART. RESULTS: 88 participants eligible for ART at their first screening visit (out of 633, 13.9%) defaulted before starting ART. Participants with less education, difficulties in dressing, a more delayed ART initiation appointment, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) < 22 cm were significantly less likely to have visited the clinic subsequently. Thirty-five (58%) of the 60 participants who defaulted and were tracked at home had died, 21 before their ART initiation appointment. CONCLUSIONS: MUAC and reported difficulties in dressing may provide useful screening indicators to identify sicker ART-eligible individuals at high risk of dropping out of the programme who might benefit from being brought back quickly or admitted to hospital for observation. Individuals with less education may need adapted health information at screening. Deaths of ART-eligible individuals occurring prior to ART initiation are not included in routine programme statistics. Considering all those who are eligible for ART as a denominator for programme indicators would help to highlight this vulnerable group, in order to identify new opportunities for further improving ART programmes
Epidemiology of injuries from fire, heat and hot substances : global, regional and national morbidity and mortality estimates from the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study
Background Past research has shown how fires, heat and hot substances are important causes of health loss globally. Detailed estimates of the morbidity and mortality from these injuries could help drive preventative measures and improved access to care. Methods We used the Global Burden of Disease 2017 framework to produce three main results. First, we produced results on incidence, prevalence, years lived with disability, deaths, years of life lost and disability-adjusted life years from 1990 to 2017 for 195 countries and territories. Second, we analysed these results to measure mortality-to-incidence ratios by location. Third, we reported the measures above in terms of the cause of fire, heat and hot substances and the types of bodily injuries that result. Results Globally, there were 8 991 468 (7 481 218 to 10 740 897) new fire, heat and hot substance injuries in 2017 with 120 632 (101 630 to 129 383) deaths. At the global level, the age-standardised mortality caused by fire, heat and hot substances significantly declined from 1990 to 2017, but regionally there was variability in age-standardised incidence with some regions experiencing an increase (eg, Southern Latin America) and others experiencing a significant decrease (eg, High-income North America). Conclusions The incidence and mortality of injuries that result from fire, heat and hot substances affect every region of the world but are most concentrated in middle and lower income areas. More resources should be invested in measuring these injuries as well as in improving infrastructure, advancing safety measures and ensuring access to care.Peer reviewe
The global, regional, and national burden of cirrhosis by cause in 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
Background Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases (collectively referred to as cirrhosis in this paper) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, although the burden and underlying causes differ across locations and demographic groups. We report on results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 on the burden of cirrhosis and its trends since 1990, by cause, sex, and age, for 195 countries and territories. Methods We used data from vital registrations, vital registration samples, and verbal autopsies to estimate mortality. We modelled prevalence of total, compensated, and decompensated cirrhosis on the basis of hospital and claims data. Disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) were calculated as the sum of years of life lost due to premature death and years lived with disability. Estimates are presented as numbers and age-standardised or age-specific rates per 100 000 population, with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). All estimates are presented for five causes of cirrhosis: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and other causes. We compared mortality, prevalence, and DALY estimates with those expected according to the Socio-demographic Index (SDI) as a proxy for the development status of regions and countries. Findings In 2017, cirrhosis caused more than 1.32 million (95% UI 1.27-1.45) deaths (440000 [416 000-518 000; 33.3%] in females and 883 000 [838 000-967 000; 66.7%] in males) globally, compared with less than 899 000 (829 000-948 000) deaths in 1990. Deaths due to cirrhosis constituted 2.4% (2.3-2.6) of total deaths globally in 2017 compared with 1.9% (1.8-2.0) in 1990. Despite an increase in the number of deaths, the age-standardised death rate decreased from 21.0 (19.2-22.3) per 100 000 population in 1990 to 16.5 (15.8-18-1) per 100 000 population in 2017. Sub-Saharan Africa had the highest age-standardised death rate among GBD super-regions for all years of the study period (32.2 [25.8-38.6] deaths per 100 000 population in 2017), and the high-income super-region had the lowest (10.1 [9.8-10-5] deaths per 100 000 population in 2017). The age-standardised death rate decreased or remained constant from 1990 to 2017 in all GBD regions except eastern Europe and central Asia, where the age-standardised death rate increased, primarily due to increases in alcohol-related liver disease prevalence. At the national level, the age-standardised death rate of cirrhosis was lowest in Singapore in 2017 (3.7 [3.3-4.0] per 100 000 in 2017) and highest in Egypt in all years since 1990 (103.3 [64.4-133.4] per 100 000 in 2017). There were 10.6 million (10.3-10.9) prevalent cases of decompensated cirrhosis and 112 million (107-119) prevalent cases of compensated cirrhosis globally in 2017. There was a significant increase in age-standardised prevalence rate of decompensated cirrhosis between 1990 and 2017. Cirrhosis caused by NASH had a steady age-standardised death rate throughout the study period, whereas the other four causes showed declines in age-standardised death rate. The age-standardised prevalence of compensated and decompensated cirrhosis due to NASH increased more than for any other cause of cirrhosis (by 33.2% for compensated cirrhosis and 54.8% for decompensated cirrhosis) over the study period. From 1990 to 2017, the number of prevalent cases snore than doubled for compensated cirrhosis due to NASH and more than tripled for decompensated cirrhosis due to NASH. In 2017, age-standardised death and DALY rates were lower among countries and territories with higher SDI. Interpretation Cirrhosis imposes a substantial health burden on many countries and this burden has increased at the global level since 1990, partly due to population growth and ageing. Although the age-standardised death and DALY rates of cirrhosis decreased from 1990 to 2017, numbers of deaths and DALYs and the proportion of all global deaths due to cirrhosis increased. Despite the availability of effective interventions for the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B and C, they were still the main causes of cirrhosis burden worldwide, particularly in low-income countries. The impact of hepatitis B and C is expected to be attenuated and overtaken by that of NASH in the near future. Cost-effective interventions are required to continue the prevention and treatment of viral hepatitis, and to achieve early diagnosis and prevention of cirrhosis due to alcohol-related liver disease and NASH. Prevalence and attributable health burden of chronic respiratory diseases, 1990–2017 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
Background Previous attempts to characterise the burden of chronic respiratory diseases have focused only on specific disease conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. In this study, we aimed to characterise the burden of chronic respiratory diseases globally, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis on geographical and time trends from 1990 to 2017.
Methods Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, we estimated the prevalence, morbidity, and mortality attributable to chronic respiratory diseases through an analysis of deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and years of life lost (YLL) by GBD super-region, from 1990 to 2017, stratified by age and sex. Specific diseases analysed included asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis, pneumoconiosis, and other chronic respiratory diseases. We also assessed the contribution of risk factors (smoking, second-hand smoke, ambient particulate matter and ozone pollution, household air pollution from solid fuels, and occupational risks) to chronic respiratory disease-attributable DALYs.
Findings In 2017, 544.9 million people (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 506.9- 584.8) worldwide had a chronic respiratory disease, representing an increase of 39.8% compared with 1990. Chronic respiratory disease prevalence showed wide variability across GBD super-regions, with the highest prevalence among both males and females in high-income regions, and the lowest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. The age-sex- specific prevalence of each chronic respiratory disease in 2017 was also highly variable geographically. Chronic respiratory diseases were the third leading cause of death in 2017 (7.0% [95% UI 6.8-7 .2] of all deaths), behind cardiovascular diseases and neoplasms. Deaths due to chronic respiratory diseases numbered 3 914 196 (95% UI 3 790 578-4 044 819) in 2017, an increase of 18.0% since 1990, while total DALYs increased by 13.3%. However, when accounting for ageing and population growth, declines were observed in age-standardised prevalence (14.3% decrease), agestandardised death rates (42.6%), and age-standardised DALY rates (38.2%). In males and females, most chronic respiratory disease-attributable deaths and DALYs were due to COPD. In regional analyses, mortality rates from chronic respiratory diseases were greatest in south Asia and lowest in sub-Saharan Africa, also across both sexes. Notably, although absolute prevalence was lower in south Asia than in most other super-regions, YLLs due to chronic respiratory diseases across the subcontinent were the highest in the world. Death rates due to interstitial lung disease and pulmonary sarcoidosis were greater than those due to pneumoconiosis in all super-regions. Smoking was the leading risk factor for chronic respiratory disease-related disability across all regions for men. Among women, household air pollution from solid fuels was the predominant risk factor for chronic respiratory diseases in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, while ambient particulate matter represented the leading risk factor in southeast Asia, east Asia, and Oceania, and in the Middle East and north Africa super-region.
Interpretation Our study shows that chronic respiratory diseases remain a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with growth in absolute numbers but sharp declines in several age-standardised estimators since 1990. Measuring routine childhood vaccination coverage in 204 countries and territories, 1980-2019 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2020, Release 1
Background Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time. Methods For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific, vaccine-specific, and dosespecific observations of routine childhood vaccination coverage between 1980 and 2019. Using spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression, we produced location-specific and year-specific estimates of 11 routine childhood vaccine coverage indicators for 204 countries and territories from 1980 to 2019, adjusting for biases in countryreported data and reflecting reported stockouts and supply disruptions. We analysed global and regional trends in coverage and numbers of zero-dose children (defined as those who never received a diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis [DTP] vaccine dose), progress towards GVAP targets, and the relationship between vaccine coverage and sociodemographic development. Findings By 2019, global coverage of third-dose DTP (DTP3; 81.6% [95% uncertainty interval 80.4-82 .7]) more than doubled from levels estimated in 1980 (39.9% [37.5-42.1]), as did global coverage of the first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1; from 38.5% [35.4-41.3] in 1980 to 83.6% [82.3-84.8] in 2019). Third- dose polio vaccine (Pol3) coverage also increased, from 42.6% (41.4-44.1) in 1980 to 79.8% (78.4-81.1) in 2019, and global coverage of newer vaccines increased rapidly between 2000 and 2019. The global number of zero-dose children fell by nearly 75% between 1980 and 2019, from 56.8 million (52.6-60. 9) to 14.5 million (13.4-15.9). However, over the past decade, global vaccine coverage broadly plateaued; 94 countries and territories recorded decreasing DTP3 coverage since 2010. Only 11 countries and territories were estimated to have reached the national GVAP target of at least 90% coverage for all assessed vaccines in 2019. Interpretation After achieving large gains in childhood vaccine coverage worldwide, in much of the world this progress was stalled or reversed from 2010 to 2019. These findings underscore the importance of revisiting routine immunisation strategies and programmatic approaches, recentring service delivery around equity and underserved populations. Strengthening vaccine data and monitoring systems is crucial to these pursuits, now and through to 2030, to ensure that all children have access to, and can benefit from, lifesaving vaccines.
