An International Analysis of the Role of Religion and Spirituality in Social Work Practice
This is the publisher's version.As service populations have changed, social workers in Norway and the United States have
attempted to respond to the needs of diverse cultures, which often include issues of religion and
spirituality. Members of the Norwegian Union of Social Educators and Social Workers (FO) and
the U.S. National Association of Social Workers (NASW) were sampled to explore attitudes and
perceptions of social workers regarding the placement of religion and spirituality in practice. In
general, U.S. social workers were more accepting of religion and spirituality than their Norwegian
colleagues. Factors such as secularism, functional differences of church and state relations, and
different historical trajectories in the social work professions development in b o t h countries may
contribute to differences between the U.S. a n d Norway
A study of the usefulness of Skylab EREP data for earth resources studies in Australia
The author has identified the following significant results. In subhumid, vegetated areas, S190B photography: (1) has a potentially operational role in detecting lineaments in 1:100,000 scale geological mapping and in major civil engineering surveys; (2) is of limited value for regional lithological mapping at 1:500,000 scale; and (3) provided much useful synoptic information and some detailed information of direct value to the mapping of nonmineral natural resources such as vegetation, land soil, and water. In arid, well exposed areas, S190B photography could be used: (1) with a limited amount of field traverses, to produce reliable 1:500,000 scale geological maps of sedimentary sequences; (2) to update superficial geology on 1:250,000 scale maps; and (3) together with the necessary field studies, to prepare landform, soil, and vegetation maps at 1:1,000,000 scale. Skylab photography was found to be more useful than LANDSAT images for small scale mapping of geology and land types, and for the revision of topographic maps at 1:100,000 scale, because of superior spatial resolution and stereoscopic coverage
A Galactic Bar to Beyond the Solar Circle and its Relevance for Microlensing
The Galactic kinematics of Mira variables have been studied using infrared
photometry, radial velocities, and Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions. For
Miras in the period range 145 to 200 days (probably corresponding to [Fe/H] in
the range -0.8 to -1.3) the major axes of the stellar orbits are concentrated
in the first quadrant of Galactic longitude. This is interpreted as a
continuation of the bar-like structure of the Galactic Bulge out to the solar

Interferometric observations of the supergiant stars alpha Orionis and alpha Herculis with FLUOR at IOTA
We report the observations in the K band of the red supergiant star alpha
Orionis and of the bright giant star alpha Herculis with the FLUOR beamcombiner
at the IOTA interferometer. The high quality of the data allows us to estimate
limb-darkening and derive precise diameters in the K band which combined with
bolometric fluxes yield effective temperatures. In the case of Betelgeuse, data
collected at high spatial frequency although sparse are compatible with
circular symmetry and there is no clear evidence for departure from circular
symmetry. We have combined the K band data with interferometric measurements in
the L band and at 11.15 micron. The full set of data can be explained if a 2055
K layer with optical depths ,
and is added 0.33 above the
photosphere providing a first consistent view of the star in this range of
wavelengths. This layer provides a consistent explanation for at least three
otherwise puzzling observations: the wavelength variation of apparent diameter,
the dramatic difference in limb darkening between the two supergiant stars, and
the previously noted reduced effective temperature of supergiants with respect
to giants of the same spectral type. Each of these may be simply understood as
an artifact due to not accounting for the presence of the upper layer in the
data analysis. This consistent picture can be considered strong support for the
presence of a sphere of warm water vapor, proposed by Tsuji (2000) when

Randomized Phase II trial assessing estramustine and vinblastine combination chemotherapy vs estramustine alone in patients with progressive hormone-escaped metastatic prostate cancer
Abstract
Based on the results of combined data from three North American Phase II studies, a randomised Phase II study in the same patient population was performed, using combination chemotherapy with estramustine phosphate (EMP) and vinblastine (VBL) in hormone refractory prostate cancer patients. In all, 92 patients were randomised into a Phase II study of oral EMP (10 mg kg day continuously) or oral EMP in combination with intravenous VBL (4 mg m(2) week for 6 weeks, followed by 2 weeks rest). The end points were toxicity and PSA response in both groups, with the option to continue the trial as a Phase III study with time to progression and survival as end points, if sufficient responses were observed. Toxicity was unexpectedly high in both treatment arms and led to treatment withdrawal or refusal in 49% of all patients, predominantly already during the first treatment cycle. The mean treatment duration was 10 and 14 weeks, median time to PSA progression was 27.2 and 30.8 weeks, median survival time was 44 and 50.9 weeks, and PSA response rate was only 24.6 and 28.9% in the EMP/VBL and EMP arms, respectively. There was no correlation between PSA response and survival. While the PSA response in the patients tested was less than half that recorded in the North American studies, the toxicity of EMP monotherapy or in combination with VBL was much higher than expected. Further research on more effective and less toxic treatment strategies for hormone refractory prostate cancer is mandatory
Evaluating the role of pathogenic dementia variants in posterior cortical atrophy
Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is an understudied visual impairment syndrome most often due to βposterior Alzheimer's disease (AD)β pathology. Case studies detected mutations in PSEN1, PSEN2, GRN, MAPT, and PRNP in subjects with clinical PCA. To detect the frequency and spectrum of mutations in known dementia genes in PCA, we screened 124 European-American subjects with clinical PCA (n = 67) or posterior AD neuropathology (n = 57) for variants in genes implicated in AD, frontotemporal dementia, and prion disease using NeuroX, a customized exome array. Frequencies in PCA of the variants annotated as pathogenic or potentially pathogenic were compared against βΌ4300 European-American population controls from the NHLBI Exome Sequencing Project. We identified 2 rare variants not previously reported in PCA, TREM2 Arg47His, and PSEN2 Ser130Leu. No other pathogenic or potentially pathogenic variants were detected in the screened dementia genes. In this first systematic variant screen of a PCA cohort, we report 2 rare mutations in TREM2 and PSEN2, validate our previously reported APOE Ξ΅4 association, and demonstrate the utility of NeuroX

A first generation BAC-based physical map of the rainbow trout genome
Background: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are the most-widely cultivated cold freshwater fish in the world and an important model species for many research areas. Coupling great interest in this species as a research model with the need for genetic improvement of aquaculture production efficiency traits justifies the continued development of genomics research resources. Many quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been identified for production and life-history traits in rainbow trout. A bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) physical map is needed to facilitate fine mapping of QTL and the selection of positional candidate genes for incorporation in marker-assisted selection (MAS) for improving rainbow trout aquaculture production. This resource will also facilitate efforts to obtain and assemble a whole-genome reference sequence for this species.[br/] Results: The physical map was constructed from DNA fingerprinting of 192,096 BAC clones using the 4-color high-information content fingerprinting (HICF) method. The clones were assembled into physical map contigs using the finger-printing contig (FPC) program. The map is composed of 4,173 contigs and 9,379 singletons. The total number of unique fingerprinting fragments (consensus bands) in contigs is 1,185,157, which corresponds to an estimated physical length of 2.0 Gb. The map assembly was validated by 1) comparison with probe hybridization results and agarose gel fingerprinting contigs; and 2) anchoring large contigs to the microsatellite-based genetic linkage map.[br/] Conclusion: The production and validation of the first BAC physical map of the rainbow trout genome is described in this paper. We are currently integrating this map with the NCCCWA genetic map using more than 200 microsatellites isolated from BAC end sequences and by identifying BACs that harbor more than 300 previously mapped markers. The availability of an integrated physical and genetic map will enable detailed comparative genome analyses, fine mapping of QTL, positional cloning, selection of positional candidate genes for economically important traits and the incorporation of MAS into rainbow trout breeding programs

Complete Chloroplast Genome Sequences of Important Oilseed Crop Sesamum indicum L
Sesamum indicum is an important crop plant species for yielding oil. The complete chloroplast (cp) genome of S. indicum (GenBank acc no. JN637766) is 153,324 bp in length, and has a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions consisting of 25,141 bp each. The lengths of the large single copy (LSC) and the small single copy (SSC) regions are 85,170 bp and 17,872 bp, respectively. Comparative cp DNA sequence analyses of S. indicum with other cp genomes reveal that the genome structure, gene order, gene and intron contents, AT contents, codon usage, and transcription units are similar to the typical angiosperm cp genomes. Nucleotide diversity of the IR region between Sesamum and three other cp genomes is much lower than that of the LSC and SSC regions in both the coding region and noncoding region. As a summary, the regional constraints strongly affect the sequence evolution of the cp genomes, while the functional constraints weakly affect the sequence evolution of cp genomes. Five short inversions associated with short palindromic sequences that form step-loop structures were observed in the chloroplast genome of S. indicum. Twenty-eight different simple sequence repeat loci have been detected in the chloroplast genome of S. indicum. Almost all of the SSR loci were composed of A or T, so this may also contribute to the A-T richness of the cp genome of S. indicum. Seven large repeated loci in the chloroplast genome of S. indicum were also identified and these loci are useful to developing S. indicum-specific cp genome vectors. The complete cp DNA sequences of S. indicum reported in this paper are prerequisite to modifying this important oilseed crop by cp genetic engineering techniques
