Intensity-Distance attenuation laws for the Portugal mainland using intensity data points

In this study, new intensity-distance attenuation law is presented, using directly the intensity observations, rather than the subjective, and sometimes controversial, isoseismal lines. This intensity-distance attenuation law is the only one defined for Portugal mainland, which is expressed as a function of magnitude. We computed this attenuation law using the slope and the intercept of the logarithmic regression of 25 events, with magnitudes between 4.4 and 6.2. Using the Bakun and Wentworth method (1997), this new attenuation law allows performing better results in the earthquake epicentral position and magnitude estimations of the 1909 Benavente event than the Atkinston and Boore attenuation law (1997). This law also gives good results in the study of site effects, presenting good matches between intensity residuals and geological structures where site effects are expected

New data on the chronology of the Vale do Forno sedimentary sequence (Lower Tejo River terrace staircase) and its relevance as a fluvial archive of the Middle Pleistocene in western Iberia

The Vale do Forno archaeological sites (Alpiar\ue7a, central Portugal) document the earliest human occupation in the Lower Tejo River, well established in geomorphological and environmental terms, within the Middle Pleistocene. In a staircase of six fluvial terraces, the Palaeolithic sites were found on the T4 terrace (\ufe24 m, above river bed) which is made of a basal Lower Gravels unit (LG) and an overlying Upper Sands unit (US). Geomorphological mapping, coupled with lithostratigraphy, sedimentology and luminescence dating (quartz-OSL and K-feldspar post-IRIR290) were used in this study. The oldest artefacts found in the LG unit show crude bifacial forms that can be attributed to the Acheulian. In contrast, the US unit has archaeological sites stratigraphically documenting successive phases of an evolved Acheulian. Luminescence dating and correlation with the Marine Isotopic Stages suggest that the LG unit has a probable age of ca. 335 to 325 ka and the US unit an age of ca. 325 to 155 ka. This is in contrast to previous interpretations ascribing this terrace (and lithic industries) to the Last Interglacial and early phases of the Last Glacial. The VF3 site (Milharos), containing Micoquian (Final Acheulian) industries (with fine and elaborated bifaces), found in a stratigraphic level located between the T4 terrace deposits and a colluvium associated with Late Pleistocene aeolian sands, is younger than 155 ka but much older than 32 ka

Organizations are presently facing unparalleled change and disruption on the global market. To endure and succeed in this volatile business context, many have witnessed the need to adopt a purpose-driven approach, which goes beyond profit. As the concept of purpose becomes more relevant in the corporate world and more organizations thrive to develop a purpose-driven strategy, it is essential for them to effectively comprehend what is purpose, what it implies and how companies can implement and structure themselves around it. This research aims to provide an analysis on the strategic relevance of developing a purposedriven business, by examining the concept of corporate purpose, its impact on financial performance and the influence it has on the behavior of two key stakeholders - customers and employees. This study, additionally, identifies ten key steps that enable the implementation of purpose at the core of a firm. Furthermore, two surveys were designed to further analyze the effects of purpose on the behavior of customers and employees. Findings, as well as results, indicate that purpose-driven businesses outperform the market, in financial terms. They also reveal that consumers are becoming more attracted, trustful, loyal and forgiving of businesses that have a purpose-driven orientation. Moreover, employees who work for firms with a well-established purpose, show high levels of motivation, engagement, satisfaction and even, productivity. The attained conclusions reveal consistency between the secondary and primary gathered data.
