Microsatellite Analysis of Trophy Largemouth Bass from Arkansas Reservoirs
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has introduced Florida largemouth bass (FLMB; Micropterus salmoides floridanus) to water bodies historically containing the northern largemouth bass (NLMB; Micropterus salmoides salmoides) subspecies since the late 1970s in an attempt to produce a trophy LMB fishery. Since 2006, the AGFC has been biannually sampling reservoirs stocked with FLMB to determine levels of admixture. Here, total sampling efforts between 2006 and 2011 have been combined, and LMB heavier than 2,268 g (5 lb) were analyzed in an effort to investigate distribution of bass by their genetic composition designated as trophy LMB by the AGFC. Of the 148 trophy LMB sampled, 123 possessed FLMB alleles (83.1%). Thirty-two of the heaviest 50 (64.0%) LMB sampled, including a potential state record that was nullified, were genetically confirmed to be FLMB. Distributions of trophy bass within reservoirs were preferentially represented by Fx-FLMB and FLMB
The penitentiary psychiatrist, in France, as in Québec and elsewhere is confronted daily with multiple dilemmas of a moral, ethical and practical nature. He/she is obliged to practice within the constraints of laws, policies and regulations which are not necessarily sensitive to the needs of the mentally disordered inmate. The distinction in French law between the “mad” and the “bad”, and the role of the psychiatrist in placing the accused in one or other of these categories is described, as is the penal system, and one regional treatment center for prison inmates. Problems related to the prescription and distribution of medications are presented in order to illustrate the constraints and ethical dilemmas inherent in psychiatric practice within a penal institution
Les facteurs pouvant expliquer ces sous-estimations sont d'ordre méthodologique (changement de sensibilité) ou physique (anomalous fading).Postdepositional latent luminescence of mineral grains buried in sediments increases with time, which makes the luminescence dating method particularly suitable for the dating of recent environments. The difficulty one has to demonstrate that the sediment has been fully zeroed before burial is still limiting its universal application. In the case of a poorly bleached sediment, the intensity of luminescence in the course of a paleodose measurement will be dominated by luminescence emitted by the unbleached grains and the age obtained will be overestimated. In order to solve this problem, a new method is being developed which is based on measurements of single grains. The ratio of the accrued luminescence intensity upon added dose over the natural component (RI=LN+y / LN) for single grains reflects the individual contribution to total luminescence from the discrete grains. Measurements carried out on three sediments of different depositional origin but of similar age suggest this parameter may eventually be used to assess the degree of zeroing for a sediment. A second application of the single grain approach allows the dating of individual minerals. This method has been applied to a sediment deposited in the lateglacial Champlain Sea (10 ka old) for which apparent luminescence ages of ca. 65 ka had been obtained. The distribution of ages obtained from the analysis of 15 grains reveals that only six of those grains have been properly bleached, with a mean apparent age of 6 ka. This underestimation of age may be caused by methodological (change of sensitivity) and/or physical (anomalous fading) factors.
