Catalytic Oxidation of Vinyl Chloride over SrCO3-Co3O4 Catalysts: Effect of the Sr:Co Molar Ratio

    Get PDF
Co3O4 catalysts modified with SrCO3 with various Sr:Co molar ratios were synthesized by a co-precipitation method and their catalytic behavior was examined for the gas-phase oxidation of vinyl chloride. The physical-chemical properties of the samples were thoroughly characterized by means of ICP-AES, BET measurements, XRD, H2-TPR, XPS and SEM-EDX. The obtained results revealed that the incorporation of strontium carbonate introduced changes in the textural and structural properties as well as modifications in the surface chemical composition of the catalysts. The performance of the samples was found to be controlled by the concentration of active species on the surface (Co2+/Co3+ and Oads/Olatt ratios) and the reducibility of the samples. As for the stability of the catalysts, clear evidences of deactivation (more severe when increasing the SrCO3 content) were noticed, probably caused by the decomposition of the SrCO3 phase and the formation of SrCl2 accompanied by a loss of textural properties and active surface oxygen species

Bimetallic Ni-Co/Al2O3 Catalysts Derived from Aluminate Spinels for Dry Reforming of Methane

Five Ni-Co/Al2O3 catalysts for dry reforming of methane were obtained by high-temperature reduction of mixed Ni-Co spinel aluminates (NixCo1-xAl2O4) synthesised by a precipitation route. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the incorporation of cobalt to the nickel aluminate spinel to the activity and selectivity of the resulting catalysts. The results indicated that the addition of cobalt was generally detrimental for the textural and structural properties of the mixed catalysts with respect to the monometallic nickel counterpart, thus producing catalysts with lower metallic dispersion. However, the presence of cobalt in the reduced catalysts resulted in an enhanced selectivity towards H2 generation. In addition to that, the lower Ni content of the mixed catalysts resulted in an improvement in stability. As a result, the Ni0.5Co0.5Al2O4 mixed spinel was able to produce a Ni-Co/Al2O3 catalyst that exhibited higher reactant conversions, H2/CO molar ratio of the product stream and higher stability than the Ni/Al2O3 monometallic catalyst

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Transformed Follicular Lymphoma (tFL): Results of a Retrospective Multicenter Study from GELTAMO/GETH-TC Spanish Groups

Simple Summary Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most prevalent subtype of indolent lymphoma, accounting for 70% of all cases. The estimated risk of histological transformation (tFL), such as diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), varies from 2-3% per year to 7-8% at 10 years in different series. Treatment after transformation is not clearly established. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) could be an option for these patients, but it has not been widely explored. We analyze the efficacy and toxicity of alloSCT in 43 patients from 14 Spanish centers. We observed long-term survival in around one third of the patients, especially those who developed chronic graft versus host disease, indicating that alloSCT continues to be a potentially curative option for patients with tFL, mainly due to the graft versus lymphoma effect. Background: Transformation of follicular lymphoma into an aggressive lymphoma (tFL) worsens the prognosis and the standard treatment is not completely defined. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) could be a potentially curative option for these patients, but it has not been widely explored. Methods: We designed a retrospective multicenter study to analyze the efficacy and toxicity of alloSCT in tFL patients and potential prognostic factors of survival. Results: A total of 43 patients diagnosed with tFL who underwent alloSCT in 14 Spanish centers between January 2000 and January 2019 were included. Median age was 44 (31-67) years. After a median follow-up of 58 months, estimated 5-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were both 35%. Estimated 100-day and 1-year non-relapse mortality (NRM) were 20% and 34%, respectively. The type of conditioning regimen (3-year OS of 52% vs. 20%, respectively, for reduced-intensity vs. myeloablative conditioning) and development of chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) (3-year OS of 75% vs. 40%) were the only factors significantly associated with OS. The only variable with an independent association with OS was cGVHD (HR, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.2-9.6). Conclusions: Our results indicate that alloSCT continues to be a potentially curative option for patients with tFL

Different states of integrin LFA-1 aggregation are controlled through its association with tetraspanin CD9

This is the author’s version of a work that was accepted for publication in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Mollecular Cell Research. A definitive version was subsequently published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Mollecular Cell Research, 1853.10 (2015): 2464-2480 DOI: 10.1016/j.bbamcr.2015.05.018The tetraspanin CD9 has been shown to interact with different members of the β1 and β3 subfamilies of integrins, regulating through these interactions cell adhesion, migration and signaling. Based on confocal microscopy co-localization and on coimmunoprecipitation results, we report here that CD9 associates with the β2 integrin LFA-1 in different types of leukocytes including T, B and monocytic cells. This association is resistant to stringent solubilisation conditions which, together with data from chemical crosslinking, in situ Proximity Ligation Assays and pull-down experiments, suggests a primary/direct type of interaction mediated by the Large Extracellular Loop of the tetraspanin. CD9 exerts inhibitory effects on the adhesive function of LFA-1 and on LFA-1-dependent leukocyte cytotoxic activity. The mechanism responsible for this negative regulation exerted by CD9 on LFA-1 adhesion does not involve changes in the affinity state of this integrin but seems to be related to alterations in its state of aggregationThis work was supported by grant SAF2012-34561 from the Spanish «Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad-MINECO», (to C.C.). Municipal distribution of breast cancer mortality among women in Spain

Abstract

Background

Spain has one of the lowest rates of breast cancer in Europe, though estimated incidence has risen substantially in recent decades. Some years ago, the Spanish Cancer Mortality Atlas showed Spain as having a heterogeneous distribution of breast cancer mortality at a provincial level. This paper describes the municipal distribution of breast cancer mortality in Spain and its relationship with socio-economic indicators.

Methods

Breast cancer mortality was modelled using the Besag-York-Molliè autoregressive spatial model, including socio-economic level, rurality and percentage of population over 64 years of age as surrogates of reproductive and lifestyle risk factors. Municipal relative risks (RRs) were independently estimated for women aged under 50 years and for those aged 50 years and over. Maps were plotted depicting smoothed RR estimates and the distribution of the posterior probability of RR>1.

Results

In women aged 50 years and over, mortality increased with socio-economic level, and was lower in rural areas and municipalities with higher proportion of old persons. Among women aged under 50 years, rurality was the only statistically significant explanatory variable.

For women older than 49 years, the highest relative risks were mainly registered for municipalities located in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia and Valencia, plus others around the Ebro River. In premenopausal women, the pattern was similar but tended to be more homogeneous. In mainland Spain, a group of municipalities with high RRs were located in Andalusia, near the left bank of the Guadalquivir River.

Conclusion

As previously observed in other contexts, mortality rates are positively related with socio-economic status and negatively associated with rurality and the presence of a higher proportion of people over age 64 years. Taken together, these variables represent the influence of lifestyle factors which have determined the increase in breast cancer frequency over recent decades. The results for the younger group of women suggest an attenuation of the socio-economic gradient in breast cancer mortality in Spain. The geographical variation essentially suggests the influence of other environmental variables, yet the descriptive nature of this study does not allow for the main determinants to be established.</p
