This study evaluates in detail the mineral chemistry, wholerock and mineral separate Os-isotope compositions of distinct platinumgroup mineral (PGM) assemblages in an isolated chromitite pod at Harold's Grave which occurs in mantle tectonite in the Shetland Ophiolite Complex (SOC), Scotland. This was the first ophiolite sequence worldwide that was shown to contain ppm levels of all six platinum-group elements (PGE) in podiform chromitite, including the contrasting type localities found here and at Cliff. At Harold's Grave the primary PGM assemblage is composed mainly of laurite and/or Os-rich iridium and formed early together with chromite, whereas the secondary PGM assemblage dominated by laurite, Osrich laurite, irarsite, native osmium and Ru-bearing pentlandite is likely to reflect processes including in-situ serpentinization, alteration during emplacement and regional greenschist metamorphism. The osmium isotope data define a restricted range of 'unradiogenic' 187Os/188Os values for coexisting laurite and Os-rich alloy pairs from 'primary' PGM assemblage (0.12473-0.12488) and similar 'unradiogenic' 187Os/188Os values for both 'primary' and 'secondary' PGM assemblages (0.1242±0.0008 and 0.1245±0.0006, respectively), which closely match the bulk 187Os/188Os value of their host chromitite (0.1240±0.0006). The unprecedented isotopic similarity between primary or secondary PGM assemblages and chromitite we report suggests that the osmium isotope budget of chromitite is largely controlled by the contained laurite and Os-rich alloy. This demonstrates that closed system behaviour of the Re- Os isotope system is possible, even during complex postmagmatic hydrothermal and/or metamorphic events. The preserved mantle Os-isotope signatures provide further support for an Enstatite Chondrite Reservoir (ECR) model for the convective upper mantle and are consistent with origin of the complex as a Caledonian ophiolite formed in a suprasubduction zone setting shortly before obduction

Objective — to investigate the anatomical and morphological structure of Ginkgo biloba leaves in the heat conditions of Kyiv. Material and methods. The study was carried out on the territory of Academician O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden and M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine. It was used light and scanning electron microscopy. Results. The investigated plants in O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden have hipostomatic leaves. Adaxial epidermis is formed by polygonal cells. The epidermal tissue cells are large (773.3 cells per 1 mm2). External periclinal walls are curved. The boundaries between the cells are obscure. The surface relief is colycular. Epicuticular wax is present (represented by piddling wax sticks). Abaxial epidermis is formed by epidermal cells and stoma complex. Epidermal cells are polygonal or isodiametral. External periclinal walls of epidermal cells are curved and have papillas formed by external periclinal walls. Epicuticular wax is well-developed, represented by wax sticks. Stomata are not oriented by their stomatal slits along leaf vein and are located between main fascicles, under the level of main epidermal cells. Number of stomata is low (168.6 per 1 mm2). In M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden G. biloba trees are characterized by similar micromorphological structure of leaf plates and almost identical to plants from O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden by their epidermal tissue structure. Differences are related to quantitative indicators (plants from M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden have more developed epicuticullar wax on both of epidermises, number of stomata per 1 mm2 — 165.3). Conclusion. Taking into account the existing global climate change in the direction of aridization Gingko biloba is promising for use in park landscaping.

Ecological-anatomical characteristics of some Tragopogon (Asteraceae) species of the flora of Ukraine

The results of the study of the anatomical structure of assimilating organs of the three species of the genus Tragopogon are described. Nowadays the anatomical structure of vegetative organs of representatives of many taxa have already been researched. The in-depth study of the anatomical structure of species of the genus Tragopogon which was conducted revealed the presence of different ways of structural adaptation of plants to growing on sands, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, revealed that the investigated taxa have structurally different leaves and stems, whose main features do not depend on the influence of conditions of existence. Almost all species of the genus Tragopogon are mesoxerophytes, the purpose of this work was to investigate the species of the Tragopogon genus which inhabit sandy soil. Such researches will be useful for solving problems of genus taxonomy and for detection of adaptive features of plants. The specimens for investigation were collected from a natural habitat. The plants were in the generative phase of development. Leaves and stems in the middle of their length were conserved for investigation. As a result, we detected features which distinguish species but they can not be used for taxonomy, as they depend on ecology. Thus, the studied species differ in the length of leaf lamina. T. ucrainicus has the thinnest lamina and T. orientalis has the thickest one. In addition, T. orientalis has the most laminaled mesophyll (it is distinctly multilayered). The type of mesophyll varied from isolateral (T. borysthenicus and T. ucrainicus) to pseudo-isolateral (T. orientalis). The numbers of layers of palisade parenchyma (both adaxial as well as abaxial)  hardly varied at all between species, except that a third layer of cells was rarely represented  in T. orientalis. The species differ in the degree of development of spongy parenchyma. It is most developed in T. orientalis (five or six layers of cells) and it is less developed in T. borysthenicus (two layers of cells). There are differences between the species in the anatomical structure of the stem. Thus, T. borysthenicus has the most developed chlorenchyma (four or five layers) and in T. orientalis it is less developed (two or three layers of cells). Cholophylless parenchyma is represented by the greatest number of layers in T. borysthenicus and by a smaller number of layers in T. ucrainicus, it is less developed in T. orientalis. The conduction system of the three investigated species is developed approximately equally. As the result of the analysis, it is possible to conclude that in the anatomical structure of all investigated species of the genus Tragopogon there is a combination of xeromorphic and mesomorphic features . T. borysthenicus from the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve exhibits the most xeromorphic features. The least xeromorphic characteristics are shown by T. orientalis from the sandy terraces of the Desna river (Chernihiv Region). We singled out a complex of anatomical features which can be additional diagnostic ones for the investigated species. T. borysthenicus is characterised by the presence of cortical conducting vascular bundles and by the placement of laticifers in the perimedullar region of the pith; in T. ucrainicus laticifers are also in the perimedullar region but cortical vascular bundles are absent; cortical vascular bundles are observed in T. orientalis but laticifers are placed all over the pith

    Get PDF
We present new analytical data of major and trace elements for the geological MPI-DING glasses KL2-G, ML3B-G, StHs6/80-G, GOR128-G, GOR132-G, BM90/21-G, T1-G, and ATHO-G. Different analytical methods were used to obtain a large spectrum of major and trace element data, in particular, EPMA, SIMS, LA-ICPMS, and isotope dilution by TIMS and ICPMS. Altogether, more than 60 qualified geochemical laboratories worldwide contributed to the analyses, allowing us to present new reference and information values and their uncertainties (at 95% confidence level) for up to 74 elements. We complied with the recommendations for the certification of geological reference materials by the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG). The reference values were derived from the results of 16 independent techniques, including definitive (isotope dilution) and comparative bulk (e.g., INAA, ICPMS, SSMS) and microanalytical (e.g., LA-ICPMS, SIMS, EPMA) methods. Agreement between two or more independent methods and the use of definitive methods provided traceability to the fullest extent possible. We also present new and recently published data for the isotopic compositions of H, B, Li, O, Ca, Sr, Nd, Hf, and Pb. The results were mainly obtained by high-precision bulk techniques, such as TIMS and MC-ICPMS. In addition, LA-ICPMS and SIMS isotope data of B, Li, and Pb are presented

The montage of the life course of Alexander Maloletov: searching for happiness in the Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia.

    No full text
This work is focused on the life course of 67 years old Alexander Maloletov. In my study I question the role of happiness for the individual, connected to present self-identity and «personal memory museum». I am considering happiness as an emotional lens, through which it is possible to think evaluatively and narratively about people’s selves and lives. The main informant is an eccentric man named Alexander Maloletov who works as a TV journalist, writes poems, fishes and constantly quarrels with his sixth wife. Twenty years ago people called Alexander a madman. He used to live on the streets, beg for money, drink vodka, lotions, colognes and steal things from his mother's house. Poetry became a life vest for him. At the beginning, he wrote autobiographical poems. Later he started reflecting on the events of the Great Patriotic War, the Afghan and Chechen wars, as well as the Siege of Leningrad. He published five books. My research project deals with idea that stories about happiness always contain realistic stories about people’s inner conflicts, doubts, struggles with life circumstances. The important message of this master work is that well-being is not constant and stable but rather it is a field of struggle
