    A GPU-based real time trigger for rare kaon decays at NA62

    Abstract This thesis reports a study for a new real-time trigger for the NA62 experiment based on Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). The NA62 experiment was devised to study with unprecedented precision the ultra-rare decay K+ → π+ Îœ anti-Îœ, a process mediated by Flavour-Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC) whose exceptional theoretical cleanliness provides a unique probe to test the Standard Model. The use of a high-rate kaon beam will result in an event rate of about 15 MHz, so high that it will be impossible to store data on disk without an efficient selection. The experiment therefore devised three trigger levels, allowing to reduce the data rate fed to the readout PC farm down to ∌10 kHz. For this thesis I developed an online trigger algorithm that uses data fed by the RICH (Ring Imaging CHerenkov counter) detector in real-time to allow a rejection of the dominant background K+ → π+ π 0 based on kinematical constraints. As a starting point for the development of this algorithm, I verified the feasibility of such a trigger through Montecarlo simulations. I measured the reconstruction resolution, achieved by the RICH detector alone, of the kinematical variables used for the event selection. After that, I analysed the background rejection power and the signal efficiency of several kinematical constraints, and I designed an actual trigger algorithm. The necessity of running the algorithm in real-time, with a maximum latency of 1 ms per event, drove the choice of exploiting the parallel computing power of GPUs. A parallelized algorithm was therefore developed, that can fit up to 4 Cherenkov rings per event. Moreover, a large number of events are processed concurrently. No parallelized and seedless multi-ring fitting algorithm existed before. The developed algorithm consists of a pattern recognition stage, to assign the hits to up to 4 ring candidates, and of a robust single-ring fit routine. The program was tested on GPUs, and its performance and execution latency proved to be compatible with the requirements. This work proves that alternative trigger designs are possible for the NA62 experiment, and represents a starting point for the introduction of flexible GPU-based real-time triggers in High Energy Physics. Sommario La mia tesi costituisce uno studio per un algoritmo di trigger in tempo reale basato su GPU (Graphical Processing Units) per l’esperimento NA62. NA62 Ăš un esperimento progettato per misurare con precisione il decadimento ultra raro K+ → π+ Îœ anti-Îœ, un canale mediato da correnti neutre flavour-changing estremamente sensibile all’eventuale presenza di nuova fisica. L’elevato rate di eventi rivelati, dell’ordine di 15 MHz, non permetterĂ  una archiviazione su disco dei dati non moderata da severi criteri di selezione. Sono perciĂČ necessari dei livelli di trigger che consentano di ridurre il rate di eventi salvati fino a circa una decina di kHz. L’algoritmo sviluppato si basa sull’uso del rivelatore RICH (Ring Imaging CHerenkov counter). Le informazioni primitive inviate dal RICH vengono valutate in tempo reale, per produrre una decisione di trigger basata prevalentemente su considerazioni di cinematica. In una prima fase ho verificato, tramite simulazione Montecarlo, la fattibilitĂ  e significativitĂ  di tale progetto. Ho dapprima misurato la risoluzione sulla ricostruzione di alcune quantitĂ  cinematiche ricavate utilizzando unicamente il rivelatore RICH, poichĂ© per un trigger di primo livello in tempo reale non sarĂ  possibile mettere in relazione dati forniti da rivelatori diversi. Ho studiato poi fino a che livello fosse possibile separare il segnale dal fondo, misurando l’efficienza di reiezione e l’accettanza per il segnale al variare di alcuni parametri di selezione. Data la necessitĂ  di eseguire il programma in tempo reale, con una latenza massima di 1 ms per evento, si Ăš deciso di sfruttare il potere computazionale parallelo proprio delle GPU (processori grafici ad elevato parallelismo). E’ stato quindi sviluppato un algoritmo in grado di eseguire simultaneamente non solo le istruzioni relative ad eventi diversi, ma anche i fit di fino a 4 anelli Cherenkov diversi appartenenti allo stesso evento. Nessun algoritmo parallelo e seedless di questo tipo esisteva in letteratura. L’algoritmo implementato Ăš composto di due parti: una iniziale di riconoscimento di pattern, che estrae il numero di anelli presenti nella matrice ed identifica gli hit appartenenti a ciascuno di essi, ed una di fit dei singoli cerchi. Il programma Ăš stato testato su GPU, ed efficienza e tempi di esecuzione risultano compatibili con le richieste. Questo lavoro apre la possibilitĂ  di implementare trigger alternativi e flessibili per NA62 e rappresenta un primo esempio prototipale dell’uso di GPU in tempo reale

Starting with the needs and limits for whole product lifecycle evaluation, this paper begins with the modeling, data capture and performance indicator aspects. In a second step, the information issue, regarding the whole lifecycle of the product is addressed. In order to go further than the economical evaluations/assessment, the value concept (for a product or a service) is discussed. Value could combine functional requirements, cost objectives and environmental impact.     To achieve a sustainable blue future, progress assessments must include interdependencies between the sustainable development goals

    The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focus on providing society with a sustainable future. Progress toward the goals is being tracked by a series of indicators. These indicators show progress toward individual goals and targets but do not show how success or failure in relation to one goal might affect success or failure in another area. We show how interactions between the oceans and human poverty, hunger, and gender equity are hidden by indicator assessments and how this undermines the capacity of governments and organizations to maximize long-term moves toward sustainability. These findings are important for decision makers who work in the public and private sectors and wish to avoid unforeseen outcomes when implementing sustainability initiatives. Here, we suggest extensions to the current assessment framework to help counteract the identified issues, providing a research agenda for scientists working in all fields of sustainability science

    Phase-locking of a 2.7-THz quantum cascade laser to a mode-locked erbium-doped fibre laser

    We demonstrate phase-locking of a 2.7-THz metalmetal waveguide quantum cascade laser (QCL) to an external microwave signal. The reference is the 15th harmonic, generated by a semiconductor superlattice nonlinear device, of a signal at 182 GHz, which itself is generated by a multiplier-chain (x2x3x2) from a microwave synthesizer at 15 GHz. Both laser and reference radiations are coupled into a hot electron bolometer mixer, resulting in a beat signal, which is fed into a phase-lock loop. Spectral analysis of the beat signal (see fig. 1) confirms that the QCL is phase locked. This result opens the possibility to extend heterodyne interferometers into the far-infrared range

    A through-life costing methodology for use in product-service-systems

    Availability-based contracts which provide customers with the use of assets such as machines, ships, aircraft platforms or subsystems like engines and avionics are increasingly offered as an alternative to the purchase of an asset and separate support contracts. The cost of servicing a durable product can be addressed by Through-life Costing (TLC). Providers of advanced services are now concerned with the cost of delivering outcomes that meet customer requirements using combinations of assets and activities via a Product Service System (PSS). This paper addresses the question: To what extent are the current approaches to TLC methodologically appropriate for costing the provision of advanced services, particularly availability, through a PSS? A novel methodology for TLC is outlined addressing the challenges of PSS cost assessment with regard to 'what?' (cost object), 'why/to what extent?' (scope and boundaries), and 'how?' (computations). The research provides clarity for those seeking to cost availability in a performance-orientated contractual setting and provides insight to the measures that may be associated with it. In particular, a reductionist approach that focuses on one cost object at a time is not appropriate for a PSS. Costing an advanced service delivered through a PSS is a problem of attributing the value of means to the economic activities carried out for specific ends to be achieved. Cost results from the interplay between monetary and non-monetary metrics, and uncertainties thereof. Whilst seeking to ensure generality of the findings, the application of TLC examined here is limited to a military aircraft platform and subsystems. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Perceived barriers and enablers of physical activity in postpartum women: A qualitative approach

    © 2016 Saligheh et al.Background: Postpartum women's recovery from birth can be assisted through increased physical activity (PA). However, women face substantial barriers to participating in exercise and require support to enable them to benefit from increased PA. Methods: This study sought to explore women's beliefs about and experiences of PA and exercise during the 6 weeks to 12 months postpartum period. A cohort of 14 postpartum women from a survey study of the barriers and enablers to exercise participation agreed to take part in interview sessions to provide an in-depth understanding of the women's perceptions of the postpartum period and their physical activity during this time. Results: Findings are presented with reference to the social ecological framework and indicate postpartum women face substantial personal and environmental barriers to PA and exercise participation: fatigue, a lack of motivation and confidence, substantial time constraints, lack of access to affordable and appropriate activities and poor access to public transport. In contrast, enablers such as possessing greater social support, in particular partner support, improved PA and exercise participation. Conclusions: The findings encourage facilitation of exercise through mothers' groups, mothers' exercise clubs or postnatal classes suggesting behavioral and social change is needed. Interaction between individuals, community, organizations and policy makers is required. In addition, the provision of specifically tailored and appropriate exercise programs could potentially enable increased PA in postpartum women, thereby improving their health

    Offspring Production among the Extended Relatives of Samoan Men and Fa'afafine

    Androphilia refers to sexual attraction to adult males, whereas gynephilia refers to sexual attraction to adult females. Male androphilia is an evolutionary paradox. Its development is at least partially influenced by genetic factors, yet male androphiles exhibit lower reproductive output, thus raising the question of how genetic factors underlying its development persist. The sexual antagonism hypothesis posits that the fitness costs associated with genetic factors underlying male androphilia are offset because these same factors lead to elevated reproduction on the part of the female relatives of androphilic males. Western samples drawn from low fertility populations have yielded inconsistent results when testing this hypothesis. Some studies documented elevated reproduction among the matrilineal female kin of androphilic males, whereas others found such effects in the paternal line. Samoa is a high-fertility population in which individuals reproduce closer to their maximum capacities. This study compared the reproductive output of the paternal and maternal line grandmothers, aunts, and uncles of 86 Samoan androphilic males, known locally as fa'afafine, and 86 Samoan gynephilic males. Reproductive output was elevated in the paternal and maternal line grandmothers, but not aunts or uncles, of fa'afafine. These findings are consistent with the sexual antagonism hypothesis and suggest that male androphilia is associated with elevated reproduction among extended relatives in both the maternal and paternal line. Discussion focuses on how this study, in conjunction with the broader literature, informs various models for the evolution of male androphilia via elevated reproduction on the part of female kin
