Several mushroom species have been pointed out as sources of antioxidant compounds, besides their important nutritional value. Agaricus blazei and Lentinus edodes are among the most studied species all over the world, but those studies focused on their fruiting bodies instead of other presentations like powdered preparations used as supplements. In the present work the chemical composition (nutrients and bioactive compounds) and antioxidant activity (free radical scavenging activity, reducing power and lipid peroxidation inhibition) of dried powder formulations of the mentioned mushroom species (APF and LPF, respectively) were evaluated. Powder formulations of both species revealed the presence of essential nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates and unsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, they present low fat content (<2 g/100 g) and can be used in low-caloric diets, just like the mushrooms fruiting bodies. APF showed higher antioxidant activity and higher content of tocopherols and phenolic compounds (124 µg/100 g and 770 µg/100 g, respectively) than LPF (32 µg/100 g and 690 µg/100 g). Both formulations might be used as antioxidant sources to prevent diseases related to oxidative stress.Capes-Carolina Foundation (Brazil) for the scholarship of doctoral sandwich (A.A.J.

Identification of vertebrate type steroid hormones in the shrimp Penaeus japonicus by tandem mass spectrometry and sequential product ion scanning

The identification of testosterone, pregnelonone, and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone by tandem mass spectrometry and of progesterone by sequential product ion scanning in the shrimp gonads of Penaeus japonicus is described. The identification of these substances in biological samples is usually done by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and involves several liquid chromotographic purification steps followed by derivatization. The utilization of tandem mass spectrometry in this analysis has simplified considerably the sample pretreatment and provided a very simple method of screening these substances in complex mixtures

A balanced diet is one of themainstays ofiherapyfor the prevention of the oxidative stress, which if cannot beeliminated, at leastcan be controlled. Food antioxidants may help intrinsic antioxidant mechanisms to fight against oxidative stress. Several mushroom species have been pointed out as sources of antioxidant compounds, besides their nimportant nutritional value. Agaricus blazei and Lentimrs edodes are among the most studied species all over the world, but those studies focused on their fruiting bodies instead of other presentations like powdered preparations used as supplements. In the present work the chemical composition (nutrients and bioactive compounds analysed by chromatographic methods) and antioxidant activity (free radical scavenging activity, reducing power and lipid peroxidation inhibition) of dried powder formulations of Agaricus blazei (APF) and Lentimrs edodes (LPF) from São Paulo, Brazil were evaluated.141 Powder formulations of both species revealed the presence of essential nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates and unsaturated limy acids. Designing the club of the future with data: A case study on collaboration of creative industries

This paper reflects on the development of a multi-sensory clubbing experience which was deployed during a two-day event within the context of the Amsterdam Dance Event in October 2016 in Amsterdam. We present how the entire experience was developed end-to-end and deployed at the event through the collaboration of several project partners from industries such as art and design, music, food, technology and research. Central to the system are smart textiles, namely wristbands equipped with Bluetooth LE sensors which were used to sense people attending the dance event. We describe the components of the system, the development process, the collaboration between the involved entities and the event itself. To conclude the paper, we highlight insights gained from conducting a real world research deployment across many collaborators and stakeholders with different backgrounds

Alteration of PTGS2 Promoter Methylation in Chronic Periodontitis

Levels of prostaglandin E2 and the prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase-2 (PTGS2, or COX-2) increase in actively progressing periodontal lesions, but decrease in chronic disease. We hypothesized that chronic inflammation is associated with altered DNA methylation levels within the PTGS2 promoter, with effects on COX-2 mRNA expression. PTGS2 promoter methylation levels from periodontally inflamed gingival biopsies showed a 5.06-fold increase as compared with non-inflamed samples (p = 0.03), and the odds of methylation in a CpG site in the inflamed gingival group is 4.46 times higher than in the same site in the non-inflamed group (p = 0.016). The level of methylation at −458 bp was inversely associated with transcriptional levels of PTGS2 (RT-PCR) (p = 0.01). Analysis of the data suggests that, in chronically inflamed tissues, there is a hypermethylation pattern of the PTGS2 promoter in association with a lower level of PTGS2 transcription, consistent with a dampening of COX-2 expression in chronic periodontitis. These findings suggest that the chronic persistence of the biofilm and inflammation may be associated with epigenetic changes in local tissues at the biofilm-gingival interface

New Physics and CP Violation in Hyperon Nonleptonic Decays

The sum of the CP-violating asymmetries A(Lambda_-^0) and A(Xi_-^-) in hyperon nonleptonic decays is presently being measured by the E871 experiment. We evaluate contributions to the asymmetries induced by chromomagnetic-penguin operators, whose coefficients can be enhanced in certain models of new physics. Incorporating recent information on the strong phases in Xi->Lambda pi decay, we show that new-physics contributions to the two asymmetries can be comparable. We explore how the upcoming results of E871 may constrain the coefficients of the operators. We find that its preliminary measurement is already better than the epsilon parameter of K-Kbar mixing in bounding the parity-conserving contributions.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV

    Get PDF
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross section. The measured charged particle spectra in η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 and 0.3<pT<200.3 < p_T < 20 GeV/cc are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification factor RAAR_{\rm AA}. The result indicates only weak medium effects (RAAR_{\rm AA} \approx 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, RAAR_{\rm AA} reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at pT=6p_{\rm T}=6-7GeV/cc and increases significantly at larger pTp_{\rm T}. The measured suppression of high-pTp_{\rm T} particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies, indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages, 5 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 10, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/98
