    Quality Assurance in Testing of Highway Materials in Pakistan

    In Pakistan three modes of transportation are usually used. It is believed that road sector is the major source of transport, which carries about 92 percent of travelers and 96 percent of cargo traffic. There are various factors which may cause the deterioration of pavement such as inadequate drainage, frost action, unsatisfactory compaction and overloading etc. One of the important factors seriously affecting the pavement performance is quality of material. Although some research work has been carried out related to use of required quality materials in highway construction; however, limited research has been done related to quality assurance in testing of highway materials in commercial laboratories. As the approval of material usage mainly depends upon testing reports provided by laboratories, therefore poor quality assurance system of testing laboratories may have adverse effect on material approvals. Rapid growth of population in Pakistan demands expansions in highway constructions; therefore, assessment and improvement of quality assurance will ensure proper usage of required quality materials. In the above mentioned context assessment of few commercial laboratories involved in highway material testing was done in comparison to public sector laboratory. The results indicate that there are significant variations in test results carried out at different commercial laboratories. Based on the assessment the study highlights the improvement areas to raise the standard of quality assurance in highway material testing in Pakistan

    There has been growing concern that the development activities have high potential to cause environmental problems. The decision-makers are trying hard to reinforce new policies and procedures towards sustainable development projects. Finding adequate land for any new business or development activity is a key factor considered in sustainable theories. Big projects involve numerous factors, and this makes land selection as a complex activity; thus, it is not easy to find the best suitable land parcel for development projects. Therefore, this chapter highlights the significance and effectiveness of GIS and MCDM in resolving various land suitability issues. The integration of GIS and various MCDM approaches is successfully seen in resolving land suitability problems in the world

    Exploring Types of Waste Generated: A Study of Construction Industry of Pakistan

    The construction sector is responsible for providing fundamental physical structure required for living and survival of human life. Increased development works have led in resulting the massive amount of waste generation in developing countries. Due to poor management system on sites, it has become more crucial and exerts several negative impacts on society and the environment. This Unused waste material has a negative impact on the ecosystem and needs a considerable amount of money for recycling, reusing and disposal of the waste. Like other developing countries Pakistan is spending a significant portion of its GDP on handling construction waste. Among the several other factors, the key contributes are highlighted in this study. This study is exploratory work investigating the types of construction waste generated on site and their relative impact of the project cost in construction projects of Pakistan. Through questionnaire the opinion of clients, consultant and constructor have been taken to identify the major types of waste having more impacts on cost and time. Through Average index, severity index and importance index, the probability of occurrence of waste through different materials, severity level of waste production by these materials, and the overall effect of all waste generating materials have been found respectively. Among the materials sand, concrete, tile is the most common materials, which are responsible for a waste generation while time and cost are the two most common non-physical waste generating factors

    An Assessment of Research Trends on FISCAL POLICY

    Fiscal policy has been a topic of research interest for researchers. It plays a very important role in the economic growth of any country. Fiscal policy does not only achieve economic development, but eliminates the hindrances that assist economic stability. Based on the significance of the term. This paper evaluates the research output of the term fiscal policy since 1970 in different fields using the Scopus database. The data was collected from the Scopus database and were analyzed using Microsoft Excel to analyze the research trends on fiscal policy. It is concluded that fiscal policy has been a topic of researchers\u27 focus since 1970 but higher attempts are made after 2000. Most of the researchers prefer journal article publications and only 1% are in the press, whereas all other articles are already published. Most of the publications are published in the English language and the researcher from the field of Economics, Econometrics & Finance, Social Sciences and Business, Management & Accounting are publishing the most on fiscal policy. This paper will assist the junior researchers to find the gap and design their future research on fiscal policy as this paper compiles the database of the last five decades available on Scopus

    The impact of surgical delay on resectability of colorectal cancer: An international prospective cohort study

    AIM: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has provided a unique opportunity to explore the impact of surgical delays on cancer resectability. This study aimed to compare resectability for colorectal cancer patients undergoing delayed versus non-delayed surgery. METHODS: This was an international prospective cohort study of consecutive colorectal cancer patients with a decision for curative surgery (January-April 2020). Surgical delay was defined as an operation taking place more than 4 weeks after treatment decision, in a patient who did not receive neoadjuvant therapy. A subgroup analysis explored the effects of delay in elective patients only. The impact of longer delays was explored in a sensitivity analysis. The primary outcome was complete resection, defined as curative resection with an R0 margin. RESULTS: Overall, 5453 patients from 304 hospitals in 47 countries were included, of whom 6.6% (358/5453) did not receive their planned operation. Of the 4304 operated patients without neoadjuvant therapy, 40.5% (1744/4304) were delayed beyond 4 weeks. Delayed patients were more likely to be older, men, more comorbid, have higher body mass index and have rectal cancer and early stage disease. Delayed patients had higher unadjusted rates of complete resection (93.7% vs. 91.9%, P = 0.032) and lower rates of emergency surgery (4.5% vs. 22.5%, P < 0.001). After adjustment, delay was not associated with a lower rate of complete resection (OR 1.18, 95% CI 0.90-1.55, P = 0.224), which was consistent in elective patients only (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.69-1.27, P = 0.672). Longer delays were not associated with poorer outcomes. CONCLUSION: One in 15 colorectal cancer patients did not receive their planned operation during the first wave of COVID-19. Surgical delay did not appear to compromise resectability, raising the hypothesis that any reduction in long-term survival attributable to delays is likely to be due to micro-metastatic disease

    Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

    PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks
