Deep 2MASS Photometry of M67 and Calibration of the Main Sequence J-Ks Color Difference as an Age Indicator
We present an analysis of Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) calibration
photometry of the old open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). The proper motion-cleaned
color-magnitude diagram (CMD) resulting from these data extends ~3 magnitudes
deeper than one based on data from the point source catalog. The CMD extends
from above the helium-burning red clump to a faint limit that is more than 7
magnitudes below the main sequence turnoff in the Ks band. After adopting a
reddening of E(B-V) = 0.041 +/- 0.004 and a metal abundance of [Fe/H] = -0.009
+/- 0.009 based on a survey of published values, we fit the unevolved main
sequence of M67 to field main sequence stars with 2MASS photometry and
Hipparcos parallaxes. This analysis yields distance moduli of (m-M)Ks = 9.72
+/- 0.05 and (m-M)o = 9.70 +/- 0.05, which are consistent with published
values. We compare the theoretical isochrones of Girardi et al. and Dotter et
al. to the CMD of M67 and comment on the relative merits of each set of models.
These comparisons suggest an age between 3.5 and 4.0 Gyr for M67. The depth of
the M67 data make them ideal for the calibration of a new age indicator that
has recently been devised by Calamida et al.- the difference in (J-Ks) color
between the main sequence turnoff (TO) and the point on the lower main sequence
where it turns down (TD) and becomes nearly vertical [D(J-Ks)]. Coupled with
deep 2MASS photometry for three other open clusters, NGC 2516, M44, and NGC
6791, we calibrate D(J-Ks) in terms of age and find D(J-Ks) = (3.017 +/- 0.347)
- (0.259 +/- 0.037)*Log Age (yrs).Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical

New observations of cool carbon stars in the halo
We report new results of our search for rare, cool carbon stars located at
large distances from the galactic plane. Eighteen new C stars were discovered.
Six are remarkable by showing the two peculiarities of a strong infrared excess
at 12 microns and a large height above the Galactic plane, from 1.7 to 6 kpc.
The number of C stars with these properties has been increased to 16. Mass-loss
rates were tentatively estimated by assuming that all these 16 stars are Miras
and by using the correlation between Mdot and the K-12 colour index. It is
found that several stars have large mass loss, with median Mdot around 4E-06
solar mass per year. It would be desirable to detect their CO emission ...
Eight stars might be at more than 30 kpc from the Sun, and two at the
unprecedented distance of 150 kpc (this abstract has been abridged).Comment: 15 pages; accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
Precision measurement of the branching fractions of J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 and psi' -> pi+pi-pi0
We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data
samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We
measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and
provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi ->
pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.)
+0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is
measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4.
The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state,
whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2,
leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Study of and
The decays and have been
investigated with a sample of 225.2 million events collected with the
BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fractions are
determined to be and . Distributions of the angle
between the proton or anti-neutron and the beam direction are well
described by the form , and we find

results suggest a large phase angle between the strong and electromagnetic
amplitudes describing the decay.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, the 2nd version, submitted to PR
First observation of the M1 transition
Using a sample of 106 million \psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII
detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the
M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and
the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: \psi(3686)\to\gamma\eta_c(2S).
Analyses of the processes \psi(2S)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S) with \eta_c(2S)\to
\K_S^0 K\pi and K^+K^-\pi^0 gave an \eta_c(2S) signal with a statistical
significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of
assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to
obtain measurements of the \eta_c(2S) mass (M(\eta_c(2S))=3637.6\pm
2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width
(\Gamma(\eta_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the
product branching fraction (\BR(\psi(3686)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S))\times
\BR(\eta_c(2S)\to K\bar K\pi) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm
0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar
measurement of \BR(\eta_c(2S)\to K\bar K \pi), we find the branching fraction
of the M1 transition to be \BR(\psi(3686)\to\gamma\eta_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm
1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, 1 tabl
Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at
the LHC.Comment: 15 pages, 5 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 10,

Higher-order multipole amplitude measurement in
Using events collected with the BESIII detector at
the BEPCII storage ring, the higher-order multipole amplitudes in the radiative
transition are measured.
A fit to the production and decay angular distributions yields
and , where the first
errors are statistical and the second systematic. Here denotes the
normalized magnetic quadrupole amplitude and the normalized electric
octupole amplitude. This measurement shows evidence for the existence of the
signal with statistical significance and is consistent with
the charm quark having no anomalous magnetic moment.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Observation of a charged charmoniumlike structure in at GeV
We study the process at a
center-of-mass energy of 4.26GeV using a 827pb data sample obtained with
the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. Based on a
partial reconstruction technique, the Born cross section is measured to be
pb. We observe a structure near the
threshold in the recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as the
. The measured mass and width of the structure are
MeV/c and MeV, respectively. Its
production ratio is determined to be . The first uncertainties
are statistical and the second are systematic.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; version accepted to be published in PR
Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries in inclusive charged dipion production in annihilations at = 3.65 GeV
We present a measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries of two charged pions in
the inclusive process based on a data set of 62
at the center-of-mass energy GeV collected with
the BESIII detector. These asymmetries can be attributed to the Collins
fragmentation function. We observe a nonzero asymmetry, which increases with
increasing pion momentum. As our energy scale is close to that of the existing
semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experimental data, the measured
asymmetries are important inputs for the global analysis of extracting the
quark transversity distribution inside the nucleon and are valuable to explore
the energy evolution of the spin-dependent fragmentation function.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Two-photon widths of the states and helicity analysis for \chi_{c2}\ar\gamma\gamma}
Based on a data sample of 106 M events collected with the
BESIII detector, the decays \psi^{\prime}\ar\gamma\chi_{c0, 2},\chi_{c0,
2}\ar\gamma\gamma are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the
states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined
to be {\cal B}(\chi_{c0}\ar\gamma\gamma) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm
0.08)\times 10^{-4} and {\cal B}(\chi_{c2}\ar\gamma\gamma) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm
0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}. From these, the two-photon widths are determined
to be keV,
keV, and
, where the uncertainties
are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG {\cal
B}(\psi^{\prime}\ar\gamma\chi_{c0,2}) and errors,
respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity and
helicity components in the decay \chi_{c2}\ar\gamma\gamma is
measured for the first time to be .Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
