Ti6Al4V-PEEK multi-material structures – design, fabrication and tribological characterization focused on orthopedic implants

(POCI) with the reference project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-006941.A multi-material concept that gathers Ti6Al4V and PEEK properties in a cellular structured component was
designed, fabricated and investigated targeting hip implants. SLM and pressure assisted injection techniques
were used to obtain Ti6Al4V-PEEK multi-material structures. Aiming to reproduce to some extension the tribological phenomena occurring during and after hip implant insertion, five tribological tests were outlined and
performed. The obtained results showed that the presence of PEEK on the Ti6Al4V-PEEK cellular structures led to a substantial improvement on the wear resistance (62% reduction in the mass loss) when compared to the material currently available on market for hip implants. The multi-material solution here investigated shows a good compromise between the primary stability after implant insertion and the wear performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
J/psi D*D* vertex from QCD sum rules
We calculated the strong form factor and coupling constant for the vertex in a QCD sum rule calculation. We performed a double Borel sum
rule for the three point correlation function of vertex considering both
and mesons off--shell. The form factors obtained are very

How Hard Are the Form Factors in Hadronic Vertices with Heavy Mesons?
The and form factors are evaluated in a full
QCD sum rule calculation. We study the double Borel sum rule for the three
point function of one meson one nucleon and one current up to order
six in the operator product expansion. The double Borel transform is performed
with respect to the nucleon and momenta, and the form factor is
evaluated as a function of the momentum of the heavy meson. These form
factors are relevant to evaluate the charmonium absorption cross section by
hadrons. Our results are compatible with constant form factors in these

Dark energy and dark matter from an inhomogeneous dilaton
A cosmological scenario is proposed where the dark matter (DM) and dark
energy (DE) of the universe are two simultaneous manifestations of an
inhomogenous dilaton. The equation of state of the field is scale-dependent and
pressureless at galactic and larger scales and it has negative pressure as a DE
at very large scales. The dilaton drives an inflationary phase followed by a
kinetic energy-dominated one, as in the "quintessential inflation" model
introduced by Peebles & Vilenkin, and soon after the end of inflation particle
production seeds the first inhomogeneities that lead to galaxy formation. The
dilaton is trapped near the minimum of the potential where it oscillates like a
massive field, and the excess of kinetic energy is dissipated via the mechanism
of "gravitational cooling" first introduced by Seidel & Suen. The
inhomogeneities therefore behave like solitonic oscillations around the minimum
of the potential, known as "oscillatons", that we propose account for most DM
in galaxies. Those regions where the dilaton does not transform enough kinetic
energy into reheating or carry an excess of it from regions that have cooled,
evolve to the tail of the potential as DE, driving the acceleration of the

Study On The Introgression Of Beef Breeds In Canchim Cattle Using Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Markers
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of introgression of breeds in the Canchim (CA: 62.5% Charolais-37.5% Zebu) and MA genetic group (MA: 65.6% Charolais-34.4% Zebu) cattle using genomic information on Charolais (CH), Nelore (NE), and Indubrasil (IB) breeds. The number of animals used was 395 (CA and MA), 763 (NE), 338 (CH), and 37 (IB). The Bovine 50SNP BeadChip from Illumina panel was used to estimate the levels of introgression of breeds considering the Maximum likelihood, Bayesian, and Single Regression method. After genotype quality control, 32,308 SNPs were considered in the analysis. Furthermore, three thresholds to prune out SNPs in linkage disequilibrium higher than 0.10, 0.05, and 0.01 were considered, resulting in 15,286, 7,652, and 1,582 SNPs, respectively. For k = 2, the proportion of taurine and indicine varied from the expected proportion based on pedigree for all methods studied. For k = 3, the Regression method was able to differentiate the animals in three main clusters assigned to each purebred breed, showing more reasonable according to its biological viewpoint. Analyzing the data considering k = 2 seems to be more appropriate for Canchim-MA animals due to its biological interpretation. The usage of 32,308 SNPs in the analyses resulted in similar findings between the estimated and expected breed proportions. Using the Regression approach, a contribution of Indubrasil was observed in Canchim-MA when k = 3 was considered. Genetic parameter estimation could account for this breed composition information as a source of variation in order to improve the accuracy of genetic models. Our findings may help assemble appropriate reference populations for genomic prediction for Canchim-MA in order to improve prediction accuracy. Using the information on the level of introgression in each individual could also be useful in breeding or crossing design to improve individual heterosis in crossbred cattle. © 2017 Buzanskas et al. Combinatorial detection of autoreactive CD8+ T cells with HLA-A2 multimers: a multi-centre study by the Immunology of Diabetes Society T Cell Workshop
Aims/hypothesis:
Validated biomarkers are needed to monitor the effects of immune intervention in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Despite their importance, few options exist for monitoring antigen-specific T cells. Previous reports described a combinatorial approach that enables the simultaneous detection and quantification of multiple islet-specific CD8+ T cell populations. Here, we set out to evaluate the performance of a combinatorial HLA-A2 multimer assay in a multi-centre setting.
Methods:
The combinatorial HLA-A2 multimer assay was applied in five participating centres using centralised reagents and blinded replicate samples. In preliminary experiments, samples from healthy donors were analysed using recall antigen multimers. In subsequent experiments, samples from healthy donors and individuals with type 1 diabetes were analysed using beta cell antigen and recall antigen multimers.
Results:
The combinatorial assay was successfully implemented in each participating centre, with CVs between replicate samples that indicated good reproducibility for viral epitopes (mean %CV = 33.8). For beta cell epitopes, the assay was very effective in a single-centre setting (mean %CV = 18.4), but showed sixfold greater variability across multi-centre replicates (mean %CV = 119). In general, beta cell antigen-specific CD8+ T cells were detected more commonly in individuals with type 1 diabetes than in healthy donors. Furthermore, CD8+ T cells recognising HLA-A2-restricted insulin and glutamate decarboxylase epitopes were found to occur at higher frequencies in individuals with type 1 diabetes than in healthy donors.
Conclusions/interpretation
Our results suggest that, although combinatorial multimer assays are challenging, they can be implemented in multiple laboratories, providing relevant T cell frequency measurements. Assay reproducibility was notably higher in the single-centre setting, suggesting that biomarker analysis of clinical trial samples would be most successful when assays are performed in a single laboratory. Technical improvements, including further standardisation of cytometry platforms, will likely be necessary to reduce assay variability in the multi-centre setting
Genuine Correlations of Like-Sign Particles in Hadronic Z0 Decays
Correlations among hadrons with the same electric charge produced in Z0
decays are studied using the high statistics data collected from 1991 through
1995 with the OPAL detector at LEP. Normalized factorial cumulants up to fourth
order are used to measure genuine particle correlations as a function of the
size of phase space domains in rapidity, azimuthal angle and transverse
momentum. Both all-charge and like-sign particle combinations show strong
positive genuine correlations. One-dimensional cumulants initially increase
rapidly with decreasing size of the phase space cells but saturate quickly. In
contrast, cumulants in two- and three-dimensional domains continue to increase.
The strong rise of the cumulants for all-charge multiplets is increasingly
driven by that of like-sign multiplets. This points to the likely influence of
Bose-Einstein correlations. Some of the recently proposed algorithms to
simulate Bose-Einstein effects, implemented in the Monte Carlo model PYTHIA,
are found to reproduce reasonably well the measured second- and higher-order
correlations between particles with the same charge as well as those in

Measurement of the B0 Lifetime and Oscillation Frequency using B0->D*+l-v decays
The lifetime and oscillation frequency of the B0 meson has been measured
using B0->D*+l-v decays recorded on the Z0 peak with the OPAL detector at LEP.
The D*+ -> D0pi+ decays were reconstructed using an inclusive technique and the
production flavour of the B0 mesons was determined using a combination of tags
from the rest of the event. The results t_B0 = 1.541 +- 0.028 +- 0.023 ps, Dm_d
= 0.497 +- 0.024 +- 0.025 ps-1 were obtained, where in each case the first
error is statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.
Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks
Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma
decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon
candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of
Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the
simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type
quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18}
MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with
