Orbit optimization for ASTROD-GW and its time delay interferometry with two arms using CGC ephemeris
ASTROD-GW (ASTROD [Astrodynamical Space Test of Relativity using Optical
Devices] optimized for Gravitation Wave detection) is an optimization of ASTROD
to focus on the goal of detection of gravitation waves. The detection
sensitivity is shifted 52 times toward larger wavelength compared to that of
LISA. The mission orbits of the 3 spacecraft forming a nearly equilateral
triangular array are chosen to be near the Sun-Earth Lagrange points L3, L4 and
L5. The 3 spacecraft range interferometrically with one another with arm length
about 260 million kilometers. In order to attain the requisite sensitivity for
ASTROD-GW, laser frequency noise must be suppressed below the secondary noises
such as the optical path noise, acceleration noise etc. For suppressing laser
frequency noise, we need to use time delay interferometry (TDI) to match the
two different optical paths (times of travel). Since planets and other
solar-system bodies perturb the orbits of ASTROD-GW spacecraft and affect the
(TDI), we simulate the time delay numerically using CGC 2.7 ephemeris
framework. To conform to the ASTROD-GW planning, we work out a set of 20-year
optimized mission orbits of ASTROD-GW spacecraft starting at June 21, 2028, and
calculate the residual optical path differences in the first and second
generation TDI for one-detector case. In our optimized mission orbits for 20
years, changes of arm length are less than 0.0003 AU; the relative Doppler
velocities are less than 3m/s. All the second generation TDI for one-detector

The discursive construction of childhood and youth in AIDS interventions in Lesotho's education sector: Beyond global-local dichotomies

Copyright @ 2010 Pion.In southern Africa interventions to halt the spread of AIDS and address its social impacts are commonly targeted at young people, in many cases through the education sector. In Lesotho, education-sector responses to AIDS are the product of negotiation between a range of ‘local’ and ‘global’ actors. Although many interventions are put forward as government policy and implemented by teachers in schools, funding is often provided by bilateral and multilateral donors, and the international ‘AIDS industry’—in the form of UN agencies and international NGOs—sets agendas and makes prescriptions. This paper analyses interviews conducted with policy makers and practitioners in Lesotho and a variety of documents, critically examining the discourses of childhood and youth that are mobilised in producing changes in education policy and practice to address AIDS. Focusing on bursary schemes, life-skills education, and rights-based approaches, the paper concludes that, although dominant ‘global’ discourses are readily identified, they are not simply imported wholesale from the West, but rather are transformed through the organisations and personnel involved in designing and implementing interventions. Nonetheless, the connections through which these discourses are made, and children are subjectified, are central to the power dynamics of neoliberal globalisation. Although the representations of childhood and youth produced through the interventions are hybrid products of local and global discourses, the power relations underlying them are such that they, often unintentionally, serve a neoliberal agenda by depicting young people as individuals in need of saving, of developing personal autonomy, or of exercising individual rights.RGS-IB
Rapid evolution of virulence and drug resistance in the emerging zoonotic pathogen Streptococcus suis
Background: Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic pathogen that infects pigs and can occasionally cause serious infections in
humans. S. suis infections occur sporadically in human Europe and North America, but a recent major outbreak has been
described in China with high levels of mortality. The mechanisms of S. suis pathogenesis in humans and pigs are poorly
understood.
Methodology/Principal Findings: The sequencing of whole genomes of S. suis isolates provides opportunities to
investigate the genetic basis of infection. Here we describe whole genome sequences of three S. suis strains from the same
lineage: one from European pigs, and two from human cases from China and Vietnam. Comparative genomic analysis was
used to investigate the variability of these strains. S. suis is phylogenetically distinct from other Streptococcus species for
which genome sequences are currently available. Accordingly, ,40% of the ,2 Mb genome is unique in comparison to
other Streptococcus species. Finer genomic comparisons within the species showed a high level of sequence conservation;
virtually all of the genome is common to the S. suis strains. The only exceptions are three ,90 kb regions, present in the two
isolates from humans, composed of integrative conjugative elements and transposons. Carried in these regions are coding
sequences associated with drug resistance. In addition, small-scale sequence variation has generated pseudogenes in
putative virulence and colonization factors.
Conclusions/Significance: The genomic inventories of genetically related S. suis strains, isolated from distinct hosts and
diseases, exhibit high levels of conservation. However, the genomes provide evidence that horizontal gene transfer has
contributed to the evolution of drug resistance

In Australia, little work has been carried out on the improvement of tropical or subtropical pastures in recent years. There seems to be an increasing demand for pastures that can withstand heavy grazing, while producing high yields of high quality forage in the humid subtropical regions of Australia. Most graziers, who live in these areas, have small acreages, which they graze intensively. Cynodon spp. represent a potential source of grasses with these attributes. This study will evaluate the pasture potential of a large number of bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) ecotypes collected from across Australia
Vulnerability to natural disasters in Serbia: spatial and temporal comparison
The frequency of natural disasters and the extent of their consequences at a
global level are constantly increasing. This trend is partially caused by increased population vulnerability, which implies the degree of population vulnerability due to high magnitude natural processes. This paper presents an analysis of vulnerability to natural disaster in Serbia in the second half of the twentieth and the early twenty-first century. Vulnerability changes were traced on the basis of demographic–economic indicators derived from statistical data for local government units (municipalities) provided by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. Calculations were performed in the geographical information system environment. The results of the study show that spatial and temporal vulnerability variations are causally correlated with changes in the selected
components. Significant rise of vulnerability is related to urban areas, while lower values are characteristic for other areas of Serbia; this is primarily a consequence of different population density
Electron microscopy investigations of changes in morphology and conductivity of LiFePO4/C electrodes
AbstractIn this work we study the structural degradation of a laboratory Li-ion battery LiFePO4/Carbon Black (LFP/CB) cathode by various electron microscopy techniques including low kV Focused Ion Beam (FIB)/Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) 3D tomography. Several changes are observed in FIB/SEM images of fresh and degraded cathodes, including cracks in the LFP particles, secondary disconnected particles, and agglomeration of CB. Low voltage (1 kV) SEM images show that the CB agglomerates have a different brightness than the fresh CB, due to charging effects. This suggests that the electronic conductivity of the CB agglomerates is low compared to that of the fresh CB particles. HRTEM analysis shows that fresh CB particles are quasi crystalline, whereas the LFP/CB interface in the degraded electrode shows amorphous carbon surrounding the LFP particles. The presence of the amorphous carbon is known to impede the electronic conductivity and thereby decreasing percolation in the cathode and reducing the electrode capacity
Evaluation of medical student self-rated preparedness to care for limited english proficiency patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) represent a growing proportion of the US population and are at risk of receiving suboptimal care due to difficulty communicating with healthcare providers who do not speak their language. Medical school curricula are required to prepare students to care for all patients, including those with LEP, but little is known about how well they achieve this goal. We used data from a survey of medical students' cross-cultural preparedness, skills, and training to specifically explore their self-rated preparedness to care for LEP patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We electronically surveyed students at one northeastern US medical school. We used bivariate analyses to identify factors associated with student self-rated preparedness to care for LEP patients including gender, training year, first language, race/ethnicity, percent LEP and minority patients seen, and skill with interpreters. We used multivariate logistic regression to examine the independent effect of each factor on LEP preparedness. In a secondary analysis, we explored the association between year in medical school and self-perceived skill level in working with an interpreter.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 651 students, 416 completed questionnaires (63.9% response rate). Twenty percent of medical students reported being very well or well-prepared to care for LEP patients. Of these, 40% were in their fourth year of training. Skill level working with interpreters, prevalence of LEP patients seen, and training year were correlated (p < 0.001) with LEP preparedness. Using multivariate logistic regression, only student race/ethnicity and self-rated skill with interpreters remained statistically significant. Students in third and fourth years were more likely to feel skilled with interpreters (p < 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Increasingly, medical students will need to be prepared to care for LEP patients. Our study supports two strategies to improve student preparedness: training students to work effectively with interpreters and increasing student diversity to better reflect the changing US demographics.</p
The genomes of two key bumblebee species with primitive eusocial organization
Background: The shift from solitary to social behavior is one of the major evolutionary transitions. Primitively eusocial bumblebees are uniquely placed to illuminate the evolution of highly eusocial insect societies. Bumblebees are also invaluable natural and agricultural pollinators, and there is widespread concern over recent population declines in some species. High-quality genomic data will inform key aspects of bumblebee biology, including susceptibility to implicated population viability threats. Results: We report the high quality draft genome sequences of Bombus terrestris and Bombus impatiens, two ecologically dominant bumblebees and widely utilized study species. Comparing these new genomes to those of the highly eusocial honeybee Apis mellifera and other Hymenoptera, we identify deeply conserved similarities, as well as novelties key to the biology of these organisms. Some honeybee genome features thought to underpin advanced eusociality are also present in bumblebees, indicating an earlier evolution in the bee lineage. Xenobiotic detoxification and immune genes are similarly depauperate in bumblebees and honeybees, and multiple categories of genes linked to social organization, including development and behavior, show high conservation. Key differences identified include a bias in bumblebee chemoreception towards gustation from olfaction, and striking differences in microRNAs, potentially responsible for gene regulation underlying social and other traits. Conclusions: These two bumblebee genomes provide a foundation for post-genomic research on these key pollinators and insect societies. Overall, gene repertoires suggest that the route to advanced eusociality in bees was mediated by many small changes in many genes and processes, and not by notable expansion or depauperation
Global Norms in Domestic Politics: Environmental Norm Contestation in Cambodia’s Hydropower Sector
This paper studies environmental norm contestation in Cambodia's hydropower sector, exemplified by the Kamchay Dam. In Cambodia we can observe different discourses in relation to hydropower. These stem directly from a local contest over the path of Cambodia's development, but use global norms as reference points: one emphasizes environmental protection, using environmental impact assessment (EIA) as point of reference; and one emphasizes the utility of the clean development mechanism (CDM) to attract large-scale investment into the energy sector while downplaying the need for environmental protection. While EIA and CDM are complementary, key actors present them as contradictory. This produces a normative fragmentation of the field of environmental protection. The paper argues that the norm diffusion literature, by presenting norm conflicts as hierarchical local–global conflicts, has paid insufficient attention to the fact that local actors actively draw on global norms to justify domestic development policies. More emphasis on this phenomenon will lead to a better understanding of the role of global norms in domestic politics and will enhance our knowledge of how domestic development policies are contested
