Plan effectiveness monitoring: Built heritage, Wellington City District Plan

    Get PDF
The goal of this project has been to assess the effectiveness of the built heritage provisions in the Wellington City District Plan. To this end, sixty nine buildings were chosen from the Plan’s Heritage List: Buildings (a sample size of around 14%), which include: 55 buildings that have had at least one resource consent granted under the District Plan. A total of 80 consents were assessed for these buildings as part of this project; 14 buildings that have had no resource consents granted. Each building was visited and an evaluation was undertaken regarding the effects of consented activities on heritage values. The effects of permitted activities (i.e. repair and maintenance) were assessed for the buildings that have no consent history. The evaluation relates only to the effects that could be viewed from the street

Analysis and restoration of ancient masonry structures: guidelines and examples

    Get PDF
The paper addresses ancient masonry structures, from the perspective of conservation, analysis and strengthening. These tasks are still a challenge to modern practitioners even if significant research advances have occurred in the last decades. Significant advances have been made in non-destructive testing, mechanical characterization, tools for advanced numerical analysis, knowledge on traditional materials and techniques, and innovative materials and techniques. Here, recent recommendations are addressed and recent case studies are presented, aiming at providing a basis for discussion and for guiding remedial measures

Managing the conservation of 20th century cultural heritage

    Get PDF
Natural deterioration caused by the ageing of the materials and their exposure tosevere environmental conditions leads to a significant increase of the vulnerability ofconstructions. When facing the need to make conservation interventions to preserve or restoredegraded cultural heritage elements, there are a number of restrictions that must be dealt with.Such restrictions are related to the safeguarding of the heritages cultural value and significancethat has to be weighed against safety and durability requirements, as well as against durationand budget constraints of the intervention. To assist in this decision-making process, amethodology is proposed which consists of an intervention index that gauges the criteriainfluencing the type of intervention. The development of this index is presented for the decisionmakingprocess related to the conservation intervention scheduled for the reinforced concretedecorative elements of the 20th century Teatro Nacional de São João (São João NationalTheatre), in Porto, Portugal. The selected criteria are presented and the advantages of theproposed procedure for the development of a sustainable conservation plan are addressed

    Designing Building Skins with Biomaterials

    Get PDF
This chapter presents several successful examples of biomaterial facade design. It discusses facade function from aesthetical, functional, and safety perspectives. Special focus is directed on novel concepts for adaptation and special functionalities of facades. Analysis of the structure morphologies and aesthetic impressions related to the bio-based building facades is supported with photographs collected by authors in various locations. Finally, particular adaptations and special functionalities of bio-based facades going beyond traditional building envelope concept are supported by selected case studies

Prepared by the Spring 2014 Preservation Planning class. These Design Guidelines explain and interpret general design criteria in the local preservation ordinance for the McDonough, serves as a tool to guide preliminary design decisions, preserves historic character of the area, protects and stabilizes property values, makes suggestions for design appropriateness and provides neighborhood continuity, stability and predictability in assessing future change. The purpose of this report is to provide recommendations that aid in the preservation of the unique architectural and historic character of the city.https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/history_heritagepreservation/1028/thumbnail.jp

A Conservation Study of the Naulakha Pavilion at Lahore Fort, Pakistan

    Get PDF
This research is a conservation study of the marble elements of the Naulakha Pavilion at the Lahore Fort in Pakistan, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The scope of work includes the two sets of adjoining jalis (lattice screens) on either side of the pavilion, that are self-supporting. The jalis along with the decorative veneer of the pavilion, both employ Makrana marble (from Rajasthan, India), more commonly known for its use in the Taj Mahal, India. Currently, the marble displays a wide array of deterioration including cracking, granular disintegration, and deformation that in several areas has led to dimensional loss. In particular, the thin, low strength jalis show signs of severe stress and destructive weathering due to thermal hysteresis in the presence of heat and moisture. So far, no comprehensive documentation of the monument’s construction, previous interventions, or its current conditions exists. This work addresses the digital documentation of existing conditions and a synthesis of the prevalent deterioration mechanisms contributing to the behavior of the stone and the overall performance of the pavilion. Investigations involved analyzing and characterizing the Makrana marble and its use in the pavilion along with conducting an in-depth conditions assessment for answering a range of research questions ultimately concerned with material, design, performance, alteration, treatment, and maintenance. The resulting digital documentation of conditions and synthesis of current deterioration mechanisms present on site, serves as a baseline for future conservation and interpretation of not just the pavilion but of the larger Lahore Fort complex as a whole

[EN] The search has tried to recover not only the image of a masterpiece forgoten work but also its origin and reason of being. Students from the Spring 2008 Preservation Planning class compiled and presented these design guidelines to the City of Stone Mountain. The design guidelines were meant to be used as a blueprint for rehabilitation or alteration of historic buildings and new construction. The guidelines present recommended and discouraged courses of action within the historic district. Three character groups are defined, commercial Main Street, a residential area centered on East and West Mountain streets, and Shermantown.https://scholarworks.gsu.edu/history_heritagepreservation/1040/thumbnail.jp
