    Hybrid UHF/UWB antenna for passive indoor identification and localization systems

A hybrid passive UHF/UWB RFID concept has been recently proposed that conciliates the potential from high resolution UWB impulse radio with the typical range from UHF-RFID identification systems. This paper proposes a new planar antenna for hybrid passive tag systems, which operates both in the UHF-RFID band and in the FCC UWB band. The co-designed UHF and UWB antenna elements are printed back-to-back on each side of a common substrate with appropriate topology for future integration with a single UHF-UWB RFID chip. Experimental tests have shown that both UHF-RFID and UWB performance of the hybrid antenna are comparable to available commercial solutions that work just on a single band. The antenna is adequate for low-cost mass production of hybrid passive tags. It aims at low-cost passive RFID systems combining the ability of item identification with precise tracking in indoor environments

    Doutoramento em Engenharia EletrotécnicaThis work investigates low cost localization systems (LS) based on received signal strength (RSS) and integrated with different types of antennas with main emphasis on sectorial antennas. The last few years have witnessed an outstanding growth in wireless sensor networks (WSN). Among its various possible applications, the localization field became a major area of research. The localization techniques based on RSS are characterized by simplicity and low cost of integration. The integration of LS based on RSS and sectorial antennas (SA) was proven to provide an effective solution for reducing the number of required nodes of the networks and allows the combination of several techniques, such as RSS and angle of arrival (AoA). This PhD thesis focuses on studying techniques, antennas and protocols that best meet the needs of each LS with main focus on low cost systems based on RSS and AoA. Firstly there are studied localization techniques and system that best suit the requirements of the user and the antennas that are most appropriate according to the nature of the signal. In this step it is intended to provide a fundamental understanding of the undertaken work. Then the developed antennas are presented according to the following categories: sectorial and microstrip antennas. Two sectorial antennas are presented: a narrowband antenna operating at 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and a broadband antenna operating at 800MHz-2.4GHz. The low cost printed antennas were designed to operate at 5 GHz, which may be used for vehicular communication. After presenting the various antennas, several prototypes of indoor/outdoor LS are implemented and analyzed. Localization protocols are also proposed, one based on simplicity and low power, and the other on interoperability with different types of antennas and system requirements.O presente trabalho investiga sistemas de localização (SL) de baixo custo baseados na intensidade do sinal (RSS) e integrados com diferentes tipos de antenas com principal destaque para antenas sectoriais. Os últimos anos testemunharam um crescimento surpreendente de redes de sensores sem fios (RSSF), onde entre diversas aplicações possíveis, a localização tornou-se uma das principais áreas de pesquisa. Técnicas baseadas na intensidade do sinal caracterizam-se pela simplicidade e baixo custo de integração. A integração de SL baseados na intensidade do sinal recebido e antenas sectoriais (AS) oferecem uma solução eficaz para reduzir o número de nós necessários e para combinar diversas técnicas de localização. Esta tese de doutoramento foca-se no estudado de técnicas, antenas e protocolos de acordo com os requisitos de cada sistema localização com especial atenção para sistemas de baixo custo baseados na intensidade do sinal e no ângulo de chegada. Inicialmente são estudadas técnicas e SL de acordo com as necessidades do utilizador e as antenas que melhor se enquadram de acordo com a natureza do sinal. Esta etapa tem como objectivo proporcionar a compreensão fundamental do trabalho desenvolvido. Em seguida são apresentadas as antenas desenvolvidas divididas em: antenas sectorias e antenas impressas de baixo custo. Duas antenas sectoriais são apresentadas: uma de banda estreita a operar a 2,4-2,5GHz e outro de banda larga 800MHz-2.4GHz. As antenas impressas foram desenvolvidas para operar a 5 GHz, pelo que podem ser utilizadas para comunicação veicular. Após apresentação das diversas antenas vários protótipos de SL interiores/exteriores são implementados e analisados. Protocolos de localização são também propostos, um baseado na simplicidade e baixo consumo, outro na interoperabilidade com diferentes tipos de antenas e requisitos do sistema

    Highly efficient impulse-radio ultra-wideband cavity-backed slot antenna in stacked air-filled substrate integrated waveguide technology

    An impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) cavity-backed slot antenna covering the [5.9803; 6.9989] GHz frequency band of the IEEE 802.15.4a-2011 standard is designed and implemented in an air-filled substrate integrated waveguide (AFSIW) technology for localization applications with an accuracy of at least 3 cm. By relying on both frequency and time-domain optimization, the antenna achieves excellent IR-UWB characteristics. In free-space conditions, an impedance bandwidth of 1.92 GHz (or 29.4%), a total efficiency higher than 89%, a front-to-back ratio of at least 12.1 dB, and a gain higher than 6.3 dBi are measured in the frequency domain. Furthermore, a system fidelity factor larger than 98% and a relative group delay smaller than 100 ps are measured in the time domain within the 3 dB beamwidth of the antenna. As a result, the measured time-of-arrival of a transmitted Gaussian pulse, for different angles of arrival, exhibits variations smaller than 100 ps, corresponding to a maximum distance estimation error of 3 cm. Additionally, the antenna is validated in a real-life worst-case deployment scenario, showing that its characteristics remain stable in a large variety of deployment scenarios. Finally, the difference in frequency-and time-domain performance is studied between the antenna implemented in AFSIW and in dielectric filled substrate integrated waveguide (DFSIW) technology. We conclude that DFSIW technology is less suitable for the envisaged precision IR-UWB localization application

    Antennas And Wave Propagation In Wireless Body Area Networks: Design And Evaluation Techniques

    Recently, fabrication of miniature electronic devices that can be used for wireless connectivity becomes of great interest in many applications. This has resulted in many small and compact wireless devices that are either implantable or wearable. As these devices are small, the space for the antenna is limited. An antenna is the part of the wireless device that receives and transmits a wireless signal. Implantable and wearable antennas are very susceptible to harmful performance degradation caused by the human body and very difficult to integrate, if not designed properly. A designer need to minimize unwanted radiation absorption by the human body to avoid potential health issues. Moreover, a wearable antenna will be inevitably exposed to user movements and has to deal with influences such as crumpling and bending. These deformations can cause degraded performance or a shifted frequency response, which might render the antenna less effective. The existing wearable and implantable antennas’ topologies and designs under discussion still suffer from many challenges such as unstable antenna behavior, low bandwidth, considerable power generation, less biocompatibility, and comparatively bigger size. The work presented in this thesis focused on two main aspects. Part one of the work presents the design, realization, and performance evaluation of two wearable antennas based on flexible and textile materials. In order to achieve high body-antenna isolation, hence, minimal coupling between human body and antenna and to achieve performance enhancement artificial magnetic conductor is integrated with the antenna. The proposed wearable antennas feature a small footprint and low profile characteristics and achieved a wider -10 dB input impedance bandwidth compared to wearable antennas reported in literature. In addition, using new materials in wearable antenna design such as flexible magneto-dielectric and dielectric/magnetic layered substrates is investigated. Effectiveness of using such materials revealed to achieve further improvements in antenna radiation characteristics and bandwidth and to stabilize antenna performance under bending and on body conditions compared to artificial magnetic conductor based antenna. The design of a wideband biocompatible implantable antenna is presented. The antenna features small size (i.e., the antenna size in planar form is 2.52 mm3), wide -10 dB input impedance bandwidth of 7.31 GHz, and low coupling to human tissues. In part two, an overview of investigations done for two wireless body area network applications is presented. The applications are: (a) respiratory rate measurement using ultra-wide band radar system and (b) an accurate phase-based localization method of radio frequency identification tag. The ultimate goal is to study how the antenna design can affect the overall system performance and define its limitations and capabilities. In the first studied application, results indicate that the proposed sensing system is less affected and shows less error when an antenna with directive radiation pattern, low cross-polarization, and stable phase center is used. In the second studied application, results indicate that effects of mutual coupling between the array elements on the phase values are negligible. Thus, the phase of the reflected waves from the tag is mainly determined by the distance between the tag and each antenna element, and is not affected by the induced currents on the other elements

    Low cost inertial-based localization system for a service robot

The success of tasks such as mapping and planning depend on a good robot’s position knowledge. The main goal of this dissertation is to present a solution that provides a estimation of the robot’s location. This is, a tracking system that can run either inside buildings or outside them, not taking into account just structured environments. Therefore, the localization system takes into account only measurements relative. In the presented solution is used an AHRS device and digital encoders placed on wheels to make a estimation of robot’s position. It also relies on the use of Kalman Filter to integrate sensorial information and deal with estimate errors. The developed system was testes in real environments through its integration on real robot. The results revealed that is not possible to attain a good position estimation using only low-cost inertial sensors. Thus, is required the integration of more sensorial information, through absolute or relative measurements technologies, to provide a more accurate position estimation

    Chipless Wireless High-Temperature Sensing in Time-Variant Environments

    The wireless sensing of various physical quantities is demanded in numerous applications. A usual wireless sensor is based on the functionality of semiconductor Integrated Circuits (ICs), which enable the radio communication. These ICs may limit the application potential of the sensor in certain specific applications. One of these applications stands in the focus of this thesis: the operation in harsh environments, e.g., at high temperatures above 175°C, where most available sensors fail. Chipless wireless sensors are researched to exceed such chip-based limitations. A chipless sensor is setup as an entirely electro-magnetic circuit, and uses passive Radio Frequency (RF) backscatter principles to encode and transmit the measured value. Chipless sensors that target harsh environment operation are facing two important challenges: First, the disturbance by clutter, caused by time-variant reflections of the interrogation signal in the sensor environment and second, the design of suitable measurand transducers. These challenges are addressed in the thesis. To overcome the first challenge, three basic chipless sensor concepts feasible for operation in clutter environments are introduced. The concepts are realized by demonstrator designs of three temperature sensors and are proofed by wireless indoor measurements. A channel estimation method is presented that dynamically estimates and suppresses clutter signals to reduce measurement errors. To overcome the second challenge, measurand-sensitive dielectric materials are used as measurement transducers, and are being characterized by a novel high-temperature microwave dielectric characterization method. Complex permittivity characterization results in temperatures up to 900°C are presented. Finally, in-depth description and discussion of the three chipless concepts is given as well as a performance comparison in wireless indoor measurement scenarios. The first concept is based on polarization separation between the wanted sensor backscatter signal and unwanted clutter. The second concept separates tag and clutter signals in the frequency domain by using harmonic radar. The third concept exploits the slow decay of high-Q resonances in order to achieve the desired separation in time domain. This concept’s realization is based on dielectric resonators and has demon- strated the capability of wirelessly measuring temperatures up to 800°C without requiring an optical line-of-sight. This performance significantly exceeds temperature- and detection-limitations of commercially available sensors at the current state-of-the-art

    Passively-coded embedded microwave sensors for materials characterization and structural health monitoring (SHM)

    Monitoring and maintaining civil, space, and aerospace infrastructure is an ongoing critical problem facing our nation. As new complex materials and structures, such as multilayer composites and inflatable habitats, become ubiquitous, performing inspection of their structural integrity becomes even more challenging. Thus, novel nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are needed. Chipless RFID is a relatively new technology that has the potential to address these needs. Chipless RFID tags have the advantage of being wireless and passive, meaning that they do not require a power source or an electronic chip. They can also be used in a variety of sensing applications including monitoring temperature, strain, moisture, and permittivity. However, these tags have yet to be used as embedded sensors. By embedding chipless RFID tags in materials, materials characterization can be performed via multi-bit sensing; that is, looking at how the multi-bit code assigned to the response of the tag changes as a function of material. This thesis develops this method through both simulation and measurement. In doing so, a new coding method and tag design are developed to better support this technique. Furthermore, inkjet-printing is explored as a manufacturing method for these tags and various measurement methods for tags including radar cross-section and microwave thermography are explored --Abstract, page iii

    Wireless sensor system for infrastructure health monitoring

    In this thesis, radio frequency identification (RFID)-based wireless sensor system for infrastructure health monitoring (IHM) is designed and developed. It includes mountable semi-passive tag antenna integrated sensors capable of measuring critical responses of infrastructure such as dynamic acceleration and strain. Furthermore, the system is capable of measuring structural displacement. One of the most important parts of this system is the relatively small, tunable, construction material mountable RFID tag antenna. The tag antenna is electronically integrated with the sensors. Leading to the process of developing tag antenna integrated sensors having satisfactory wireless performance (sensitivity and read range) when mounted on concrete and metal structural members, the electromagnetic performance of the tag antenna is analyzed and optimized using both numerical and experimental procedures. Subsequently, it is shown that both the simulation and the experimental measurement results are in good agreement. The semi-passive RFID-based system is implemented in a wireless IHM system with multiple sensor points to measure dynamic acceleration and strain. The developed system can determine the natural frequencies of infrastructure and identify any state changes of infrastructure by measuring natural frequency shifts. Enhancement of the spectral bandwidth of the system has been performed under the constraints of the RFID hardware. The influence of the orientation and shape of the structural members on wireless power flow in the vicinity of those members is also investigated with the RFID reader-tag antenna system in both simulation and experiments. The antenna system simulations with a full-scale structural member have shown that both the orientation and the shape of the structural member influence the wireless power flow towards and in the vicinity of the member, respectively. The measurement results of the conducted laboratory experiments using the RFID antenna system in passive mode have shown good agreement with simulation results. Furthermore, the system’s ability to measure structural displacement is also investigated by conducting phase angle of arrival measurements. It is shown that the system in its passive mode is capable of measuring small structural displacements within a short wireless distance. The benchmarking of the developed system with independent, commercial, wired and wireless measurement systems has confirmed the ability of the RFID-based system to measure dynamic acceleration and strain. Furthermore, it has confirmed the system’s ability to determine the natural frequency of an infrastructure accurately. Therefore, the developed system with wireless sensors that do not consume battery power in data transmission and with the capability of dynamic response measurement is highly applicable in IHM
