    Fir (Abies spp.) stand biomass additive model for Eurasia sensitive to winter temperature and annual precipitation

    Climate change, especially modified courses of temperature and precipitation, has a significant impact on forest functioning and productivity. Moreover, some alterations in tree biomass allocation (e.g. root to shoot ratio, foliage to wood parts) might be expected in these changing ecological conditions. Therefore, we attempted to model fir stand biomass (t ha(-1)) along the trans-Eurasian hydrothermal gradients using the data from 272 forest stands. The model outputs suggested that all biomass components, except for the crown mass, change in a common pattern, but in different ratios. Specifically, in the range of mean January temperature and precipitation of -30 degrees C to +10 degrees C and 300 to 900 mm, fir stand biomass increases with both increasing temperature and precipitation. Under an assumed increase of January temperature by 1 degrees C, biomass of roots and of all components of the aboveground biomass of fir stands increased (under the assumption that the precipitation level did not change). Similarly, an assumed increase in precipitation by 100 mm resulted in the increased biomass of roots and of all aboveground components. We conclude that fir seems to be a perspective taxon from the point of its productive properties in the ongoing process of climate change.This paper was prepared within the programs of the current scientific research of the Ural Forest Engineering University and Botanical Garden of the Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences.     Algorithmic Superactivation of Asymptotic Quantum Capacity of Zero-Capacity Quantum Channels

    The superactivation of zero-capacity quantum channels makes it possible to use two zero-capacity quantum channels with a positive joint capacity for their output. Currently, we have no theoretical background to describe all possible combinations of superactive zero-capacity channels; hence, there may be many other possible combinations. In practice, to discover such superactive zero-capacity channel-pairs, we must analyze an extremely large set of possible quantum states, channel models, and channel probabilities. There is still no extremely efficient algorithmic tool for this purpose. This paper shows an efficient algorithmical method of finding such combinations.     The origin of quasiconformal mappings, like that of conformal mappings, can be traced back to old cartography where the basic problem was the search for mappings from the sphere onto the plane with minimal deviation from conformality, subject to certain conditions which were made precise. In this paper, we survey the development of cartography, highlighting the main ideas that are related to quasiconformality. Some of these ideas were completely ignored in the previous historical surveys on quasiconformal mappings. We then survey early quasiconformal theory in the works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller, which are the 20th-century founders of the theory

    Editorial: Perceiving and Acting in the real world: from neural activity to behavior

    The interaction between perception and action represents one of the pillars of human evolutionary success. Our interactions with the surrounding world involve a variety of behaviors, almost always including movements of the eyes and hands. Such actions rely on neural mechanisms that must process an enormous amount of information in order to generate appropriate motor commands. Yet, compared to the great advancements in the field of perception for cognition, the neural underpinnings of how we control our movements, as well as the interactions between perception and motor control, remain elusive. With this research topic we provide a framework for: 1) the perception of real objects and shapes using visual and haptic information, 2) the reference frames for action and perception, and 3) how perceived target properties are translated into goal-directed actions and object manipulation. The studies in this special issue employ a variety of methodologies that include behavioural kinematics, neuroimaging, transcranial magnetic stimulation and patient cases. Here we provide a brief summary and commentary on the articles included in this research topic

    Rough matroids based on coverings

    The introduction of covering-based rough sets has made a substantial contribution to the classical rough sets. However, many vital problems in rough sets, including attribution reduction, are NP-hard and therefore the algorithms for solving them are usually greedy. Matroid, as a generalization of linear independence in vector spaces, it has a variety of applications in many fields such as algorithm design and combinatorial optimization. An excellent introduction to the topic of rough matroids is due to Zhu and Wang. On the basis of their work, we study the rough matroids based on coverings in this paper. First, we investigate some properties of the definable sets with respect to a covering. Specifically, it is interesting that the set of all definable sets with respect to a covering, equipped with the binary relation of inclusion \subseteq, constructs a lattice. Second, we propose the rough matroids based on coverings, which are a generalization of the rough matroids based on relations. Finally, some properties of rough matroids based on coverings are explored. Moreover, an equivalent formulation of rough matroids based on coverings is presented. These interesting and important results exhibit many potential connections between rough sets and matroids.Comment: 15page

    BIM and forecasting deformations in monitoring structures

    BIM technologies are becoming more widely used, mainly in the design and operation of buildings and structures, and in most cases this is enough for trouble-free operation. Nevertheless, there is a category of buildings for which the monitoring of the technical condition should be an integral part of the construction and operation. These are the so-called public large-span structures. Unfortunately, the development of BIM technology in the Russian Federation is not at such a level as to answer questions about the behaviour of objects under changing environmental conditions and reveal hidden patterns in the monitoring data. Based on the analysis of literary sources, the authors reviewed various methods for identifying hidden patterns in geodetic measurement data when monitoring buildings and structures. It is noted that modern analysis methods are based on statistical processing of measurement results and on the statistical method of forecasting. However, there are attempts to apply models that take into account the design features and the temperature regime of the object. This type includes the two proposed models, which are used to model the three-dimensional coordinates of the strain marks in the 3D model and only the elevations of the marks in the 1-Z model. The article presents the rationale for the simulated geometric elements and properties of the object. The solution of the equations of both models and the analysis of the results and parameters of the model for measurement epochs are shown. The simulation is shown on the example of a real object, which was monitored by the authors in 2015-2016. The authors believe that the monitoring of large-span structures and the search for patterns of their behaviour should be an integral part of the BIM system for such structures

    Some characteristics of matroids through rough sets

    At present, practical application and theoretical discussion of rough sets are two hot problems in computer science. The core concepts of rough set theory are upper and lower approximation operators based on equivalence relations. Matroid, as a branch of mathematics, is a structure that generalizes linear independence in vector spaces. Further, matroid theory borrows extensively from the terminology of linear algebra and graph theory. We can combine rough set theory with matroid theory through using rough sets to study some characteristics of matroids. In this paper, we apply rough sets to matroids through defining a family of sets which are constructed from the upper approximation operator with respect to an equivalence relation. First, we prove the family of sets satisfies the support set axioms of matroids, and then we obtain a matroid. We say the matroids induced by the equivalence relation and a type of matroid, namely support matroid, is induced. Second, through rough sets, some characteristics of matroids such as independent sets, support sets, bases, hyperplanes and closed sets are investigated.Comment: 13 page
