    Handwritten and machine-printed text discrimination using a template matching approach

    We propose a novel template matching approach for the discrimination of handwritten and machine-printed text. We first pre-process the scanned document images by performing denoising, circles/lines exclusion and word-block level segmentation. We then align and match characters in a flexible sized gallery with the segmented regions, using parallelised normalised cross-correlation. The experimental results over the Pattern Recognition & Image Analysis Research Lab-Natural History Museum (PRImA-NHM) dataset show remarkably high robustness of the algorithm in classifying cluttered, occluded and noisy samples, in addition to those with significant high missing data. The algorithm, which gives 84.0% classification rate with false positive rate 0.16 over the dataset, does not require training samples and generates compelling results as opposed to the training-based approaches, which have used the same benchmark

    Currently the world swiftly adapts to visual communication. Online services like YouTube and Vine show that video is no longer the domain of broadcast television only. Video is used for different purposes like entertainment, information, education or communication. The rapid growth of today’s video archives with sparsely available editorial data creates a big problem of its retrieval. The humans see a video like a complex interplay of cognitive concepts. As a result there is a need to build a bridge between numeric values and semantic concepts. This establishes a connection that will facilitate videos’ retrieval by humans. The critical aspect of this bridge is video annotation. The process could be done manually or automatically. Manual annotation is very tedious, subjective and expensive. Therefore automatic annotation is being actively studied. In this thesis we focus on the multimedia content automatic annotation. Namely the use of analysis techniques for information retrieval allowing to automatically extract metadata from video in a videomail system. Furthermore the identification of text, people, actions, spaces, objects, including animals and plants. Hence it will be possible to align multimedia content with the text presented in the email message and the creation of applications for semantic video database indexing and retrieving

    Combination of deep neural networks and logical rules for record segmentation in historical handwritten registers using few examples

    International audienceThis work focuses on the layout analysis of historical handwritten registers, in which local religious ceremonies were recorded. The aim of this work is to delimit each record in these registers. To this end, two approaches are proposed. Firstly, object detection networks are explored, as three state-of-the-art architectures are compared. Further experiments are then conducted on Mask R-CNN, as it yields the best performance. Secondly, we introduce and investigate Deep Syntax, a hybrid system that takes advantages of recurrent patterns to delimit each record, by combining ushaped networks and logical rules. Finally, these two approaches are evaluated on 3708 French records (16-18th centuries), as well as on the Esposalles public database, containing 253 Spanish records (17th century). While both systems perform well on homogeneous documents, we observe a significant drop in performance with Mask R-CNN on heterogeneous documents, especially when trained on a non-representative subset. By contrast, Deep Syntax relies on steady patterns, and is therefore able to process a wider range of documents with less training data. Not only Deep Syntax produces 15% more match configurations and reduces the ZoneMap surface error metric by 30% when both systems are trained on 120 images, but it also outperforms Mask R-CNN when trained on a database three times smaller. As Deep Syntax generalizes better, we believe it can be used in the context of massive document processing, as collecting and annotating a sufficiently large and representative set of training data is not always achievable

    Open source face recognition API

    Face recognition applications are widely used today for a variety of tasks, whether personal or professional. When looking for a service that provides face detection and classification, it is easy to find several solutions. In this project another way is described so that it is possible to perform this task according to the desired needs without the need to use proprietary software. With the emergence of the Django Rest Frame Work, web application development has become easier. This work describes development of stable foundation and features that offer an administration panel, relational database management, and support for a Restful Application Programming Interface (API). This takes advantage of the exclusive use of Open Source technologies thus the application code can be modified and distributed free of charge. For the development of an API that could perform detection and facial recognition, applying an Open Source philosophy, in addition to Django Rest Framework technologies such as Python, C++, MySql and JSON were used. The prototype is initially capable of recognizing the number of faces per image, assessing eyes, smile, age and gender. Flexibility is designed to increase application capabilities with new algorithms implemented in various programing languages.Atualmente, as aplicações de reconhecimento de facial são amplamente utilizadas para uma variedade de tarefas, pessoais ou profissionais. Ao procurarmos um serviço que forneça deteção e classificação de rosto, é fácil encontrar várias soluções. Neste projeto, é descrita outra maneira para que seja possível executar esta tarefa de acordo com as necessidades desejadas, sem a necessidade de usar software proprietário. Com o surgimento do Django Rest Framework, o desenvolvimento de aplicações web ficou mais fácil. Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de bases e recursos estáveis que oferecem um painel de administração, gestão de uma base de dados relacional e o suporte para uma API (Application Programming Interface) Restful. Ao tirar proveito do uso exclusivo de tecnologias Open Source, é permitido que o código possa ser modificado e distribuído gratuitamente. Para o desenvolvimento de uma API que pudesse realizar a deteção e o reconhecimento facial, aplicando uma filosofia Open Source, para além da tecnologia Django Rest Framework foram utilizadas tecnologias como Python, C ++, MySql e JSON. O protótipo é inicialmente capaz de reconhecer o número de rostos por imagem, e avaliar olhos, sorriso, idade e sexo. Mas para além disso, foi projetada flexibilidade para aumentar os recursos através da implementação de novos algoritmos em várias linguagens de programação

    Objects extraction and recognition for camera-based interaction : heuristic and statistical approaches

    In this thesis, heuristic and probabilistic methods are applied to a number of problems for camera-based interactions. The goal is to provide solutions for a vision based system that is able to extract and analyze interested objects in camera images and to use that information for various interactions for mobile usage. New methods and new attempts of combination of existing methods are developed for different applications, including text extraction from complex scene images, bar code reading performed by camera phones, and face/facial feature detection and facial expression manipulation. The application-driven problems of camera-based interaction can not be modeled by a uniform and straightforward model that has very strong simplifications of reality. The solutions we learned to be efficient were to apply heuristic but easy of implementation approaches at first to reduce the complexity of the problems and search for possible means, then use developed statistical learning approaches to deal with the remaining difficult but well-defined problems and get much better accuracy. The process can be evolved in some or all of the stages, and the combination of the approaches is problem-dependent. Contribution of this thesis resides in two aspects: firstly, new features and approaches are proposed either as heuristics or statistical means for concrete applications; secondly engineering design combining seveal methods for system optimization is studied. Geometrical characteristics and the alignment of text, texture features of bar codes, and structures of faces can all be extracted as heuristics for object extraction and further recognition. The boosting algorithm is one of the proper choices to perform probabilistic learning and to achieve desired accuracy. New feature selection techniques are proposed for constructing the weak learner and applying the boosting output in concrete applications. Subspace methods such as manifold learning algorithms are introduced and tailored for facial expression analysis and synthesis. A modified generalized learning vector quantization method is proposed to deal with the blurring of bar code images. Efficient implementations that combine the approaches in a rational joint point are presented and the results are illustrated.reviewe

    Invariant encoding schemes for visual recognition

    Many encoding schemes, such as the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG), make use of templates of histograms to enable a loose encoding of the spatial position of basic features such as oriented gradients. Whilst such schemes have been successfully applied, the use of a template may limit the potential as it forces the histograms to conform to a rigid spatial arrangement. In this work we look at developing novel schemes making use of histograms, without the need for a template, which offer good levels of performance in visual recognition tasks. To do this, we look at the way the basic feature type changes across scale at individual locations. This gives rise to the notion of column features, which capture this change across scale by concatenating feature types at a given scale separation. As well as applying this idea to oriented gradients, we make wide use of Basic Image Features (BIFs) and oriented Basic Image Features (oBIFs) which encode local symmetry information. This resulted in a range of encoding schemes. We then tested these schemes on problems of current interest in three application areas. First, the recognition of characters taken from natural images, where our system outperformed existing methods. For the second area we selected a texture problem, involving the discrimination of quartz grains using surface texture, where the system achieved near perfect performance on the first task, and a level of performance comparable to an expert human on the second. In the third area, writer identification, the system achieved a perfect score and outperformed other methods when tested using the Arabic handwriting dataset as part of the ICDAR 2011 Competition

    Reliable pattern recognition system with novel semi-supervised learning approach

    Over the past decade, there has been considerable progress in the design of statistical machine learning strategies, including Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) approaches. However, researchers still have difficulties in applying most of these learning strategies when two or more classes overlap, and/or when each class has a bimodal/multimodal distribution. In this thesis, an efficient, robust, and reliable recognition system with a novel SSL scheme has been developed to overcome overlapping problems between two classes and bimodal distribution within each class. This system was based on the nature of category learning and recognition to enhance the system's performance in relevant applications. In the training procedure, besides the supervised learning strategy, the unsupervised learning approach was applied to retrieve the "extra information" that could not be obtained from the images themselves. This approach was very helpful for the classification between two confusing classes. In this SSL scheme, both the training data and the test data were utilized in the final classification. In this thesis, the design of a promising supervised learning model with advanced state-of-the-art technologies is firstly presented, and a novel rejection measurement for verification of rejected samples, namely Linear Discriminant Analysis Measurement (LDAM), is defined. Experiments on CENPARMI's Hindu-Arabic Handwritten Numeral Database, CENPARMI's Numerals Database, and NIST's Numerals Database were conducted in order to evaluate the efficiency of LDAM. Moreover, multiple verification modules, including a Writing Style Verification (WSV) module, have been developed according to four newly defined error categories. The error categorization was based on the different costs of misclassification. The WSV module has been developed by the unsupervised learning approach to automatically retrieve the person's writing styles so that the rejected samples can be classified and verified accordingly. As a result, errors on CENPARMI's Hindu-Arabic Handwritten Numeral Database (24,784 training samples, 6,199 testing samples) were reduced drastically from 397 to 59, and the final recognition rate of this HAHNR reached 99.05%, a significantly higher rate compared to other experiments on the same database. When the rejection option was applied on this database, the recognition rate, error rate, and reliability were 97.89%, 0.63%, and 99.28%, respectivel

    Face recognition by means of advanced contributions in machine learning

    Face recognition (FR) has been extensively studied, due to both scientific fundamental challenges and current and potential applications where human identification is needed. FR systems have the benefits of their non intrusiveness, low cost of equipments and no useragreement requirements when doing acquisition, among the most important ones. Nevertheless, despite the progress made in last years and the different solutions proposed, FR performance is not yet satisfactory when more demanding conditions are required (different viewpoints, blocked effects, illumination changes, strong lighting states, etc). Particularly, the effect of such non-controlled lighting conditions on face images leads to one of the strongest distortions in facial appearance. This dissertation addresses the problem of FR when dealing with less constrained illumination situations. In order to approach the problem, a new multi-session and multi-spectral face database has been acquired in visible, Near-infrared (NIR) and Thermal infrared (TIR) spectra, under different lighting conditions. A theoretical analysis using information theory to demonstrate the complementarities between different spectral bands have been firstly carried out. The optimal exploitation of the information provided by the set of multispectral images has been subsequently addressed by using multimodal matching score fusion techniques that efficiently synthesize complementary meaningful information among different spectra. Due to peculiarities in thermal images, a specific face segmentation algorithm has been required and developed. In the final proposed system, the Discrete Cosine Transform as dimensionality reduction tool and a fractional distance for matching were used, so that the cost in processing time and memory was significantly reduced. Prior to this classification task, a selection of the relevant frequency bands is proposed in order to optimize the overall system, based on identifying and maximizing independence relations by means of discriminability criteria. The system has been extensively evaluated on the multispectral face database specifically performed for our purpose. On this regard, a new visualization procedure has been suggested in order to combine different bands for establishing valid comparisons and giving statistical information about the significance of the results. This experimental framework has more easily enabled the improvement of robustness against training and testing illumination mismatch. Additionally, focusing problem in thermal spectrum has been also addressed, firstly, for the more general case of the thermal images (or thermograms), and then for the case of facialthermograms from both theoretical and practical point of view. In order to analyze the quality of such facial thermograms degraded by blurring, an appropriate algorithm has been successfully developed. Experimental results strongly support the proposed multispectral facial image fusion, achieving very high performance in several conditions. These results represent a new advance in providing a robust matching across changes in illumination, further inspiring highly accurate FR approaches in practical scenarios.El reconeixement facial (FR) ha estat àmpliament estudiat, degut tant als reptes fonamentals científics que suposa com a les aplicacions actuals i futures on requereix la identificació de les persones. Els sistemes de reconeixement facial tenen els avantatges de ser no intrusius,presentar un baix cost dels equips d’adquisició i no la no necessitat d’autorització per part de l’individu a l’hora de realitzar l'adquisició, entre les més importants. De totes maneres i malgrat els avenços aconseguits en els darrers anys i les diferents solucions proposades, el rendiment del FR encara no resulta satisfactori quan es requereixen condicions més exigents (diferents punts de vista, efectes de bloqueig, canvis en la il·luminació, condicions de llum extremes, etc.). Concretament, l'efecte d'aquestes variacions no controlades en les condicions d'il·luminació sobre les imatges facials condueix a una de les distorsions més accentuades sobre l'aparença facial. Aquesta tesi aborda el problema del FR en condicions d'il·luminació menys restringides. Per tal d'abordar el problema, hem adquirit una nova base de dades de cara multisessió i multiespectral en l'espectre infraroig visible, infraroig proper (NIR) i tèrmic (TIR), sota diferents condicions d'il·luminació. En primer lloc s'ha dut a terme una anàlisi teòrica utilitzant la teoria de la informació per demostrar la complementarietat entre les diferents bandes espectrals objecte d’estudi. L'òptim aprofitament de la informació proporcionada pel conjunt d'imatges multiespectrals s'ha abordat posteriorment mitjançant l'ús de tècniques de fusió de puntuació multimodals, capaces de sintetitzar de manera eficient el conjunt d’informació significativa complementària entre els diferents espectres. A causa de les característiques particulars de les imatges tèrmiques, s’ha requerit del desenvolupament d’un algorisme específic per la segmentació de les mateixes. En el sistema proposat final, s’ha utilitzat com a eina de reducció de la dimensionalitat de les imatges, la Transformada del Cosinus Discreta i una distància fraccional per realitzar les tasques de classificació de manera que el cost en temps de processament i de memòria es va reduir de forma significa. Prèviament a aquesta tasca de classificació, es proposa una selecció de les bandes de freqüències més rellevants, basat en la identificació i la maximització de les relacions d'independència per mitjà de criteris discriminabilitat, per tal d'optimitzar el conjunt del sistema. El sistema ha estat àmpliament avaluat sobre la base de dades de cara multiespectral, desenvolupada pel nostre propòsit. En aquest sentit s'ha suggerit l’ús d’un nou procediment de visualització per combinar diferents bandes per poder establir comparacions vàlides i donar informació estadística sobre el significat dels resultats. Aquest marc experimental ha permès més fàcilment la millora de la robustesa quan les condicions d’il·luminació eren diferents entre els processos d’entrament i test. De forma complementària, s’ha tractat la problemàtica de l’enfocament de les imatges en l'espectre tèrmic, en primer lloc, pel cas general de les imatges tèrmiques (o termogrames) i posteriorment pel cas concret dels termogrames facials, des dels punt de vista tant teòric com pràctic. En aquest sentit i per tal d'analitzar la qualitat d’aquests termogrames facials degradats per efectes de desenfocament, s'ha desenvolupat un últim algorisme. Els resultats experimentals recolzen fermament que la fusió d'imatges facials multiespectrals proposada assoleix un rendiment molt alt en diverses condicions d’il·luminació. Aquests resultats representen un nou avenç en l’aportació de solucions robustes quan es contemplen canvis en la il·luminació, i esperen poder inspirar a futures implementacions de sistemes de reconeixement facial precisos en escenaris no controlats.Postprint (published version
