    Spatial-temporal data modelling and processing for personalised decision support

    The purpose of this research is to undertake the modelling of dynamic data without losing any of the temporal relationships, and to be able to predict likelihood of outcome as far in advance of actual occurrence as possible. To this end a novel computational architecture for personalised ( individualised) modelling of spatio-temporal data based on spiking neural network methods (PMeSNNr), with a three dimensional visualisation of relationships between variables is proposed. In brief, the architecture is able to transfer spatio-temporal data patterns from a multidimensional input stream into internal patterns in the spiking neural network reservoir. These patterns are then analysed to produce a personalised model for either classification or prediction dependent on the specific needs of the situation. The architecture described above was constructed using MatLab© in several individual modules linked together to form NeuCube (M1). This methodology has been applied to two real world case studies. Firstly, it has been applied to data for the prediction of stroke occurrences on an individual basis. Secondly, it has been applied to ecological data on aphid pest abundance prediction. Two main objectives for this research when judging outcomes of the modelling are accurate prediction and to have this at the earliest possible time point. The implications of these findings are not insignificant in terms of health care management and environmental control. As the case studies utilised here represent vastly different application fields, it reveals more of the potential and usefulness of NeuCube (M1) for modelling data in an integrated manner. This in turn can identify previously unknown (or less understood) interactions thus both increasing the level of reliance that can be placed on the model created, and enhancing our human understanding of the complexities of the world around us without the need for over simplification.     Machine Learning Based Surrogate Model for Hurricane Storm Surge Forecasting in the Laguna Madre

    Texas coastal communities are at constant risk of hurricane impacts every storm season. It is especially important to model and predict storm surge variations during hurricane and storm events. Traditionally, hurricane storm surge predictions have been the result of numerical hydrodynamics based simulations. This type of simulations often requires high amounts of computational resources and complex ocean modelling efforts. Recently, machine learning techniques are being explored and are gaining popularity in hydrologic and ocean engineering modelling fields based on their performance to model nonlinear relationships and low computational requirements for prediction. Advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (A.I.) demand the application of these methods for the modelling of complex problems such as storm surge. This study gathers historical water level data from coastal buoy stations, uses gridded forecasted weather datasets, and builds a database of ADCIRC hydrodynamic simulations to create a machine learning based surrogate model to provide timely, non-computationally intensive and accurate storm surge predictions for the Lower Laguna Madre in Texas

    Modeling the Permanent Deformation Behavior of Asphalt Mixtures Using a Novel Hybrid Computational Intelligence

    One of the main causes of pavement rutting is the repetitive action of traffic loads which results in the accumulation of permanent deformations. As a result, it is important to understand the characteristics of the permanent deformation behavior of asphalt mixes under repeated loading and to build the accurate mix model before they are placed in roadways. This study proposed a hybrid computational intelligence system named SOS-LSSVM for modelling the permanent pavement deformation behavior of asphalt mixtures. The SOS-LSSVM fuses Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) and Symbiotic Organisms Search (SOS). LSSVM is employed for establishing the relationship model between the flow number, which is obtained from the laboratory test, and the parameters of the asphalt mix design. SOS is used to find the best LSSVM tuning parameters. A total 118 historical cases were used to establish the intelligence prediction model. Obtained results validate the ability of SOS-LSSVM to model the pavement rutting behavior of asphalt mixture with a relatively high accuracy measured by four error indicators. Therefore, the proposed computational intelligence systems can offer a high benefit for road designers and engineers in decision-making processes

We also explore the powerful combination of Big Data and Computational Intelligence (CI) and identify a number of areas, where novel applications in real world smart city problems can be developed by utilizing these powerful tools and techniques. We present a case study for intelligent transportation in the context of a smart city, and a novel data modelling methodology based on a biologically inspired universal generative modelling approach called Hierarchical Spatial-Temporal State Machine (HSTSM).     Application of Computational Intelligence Techniques to Process Industry Problems

    In the last two decades there has been a large progress in the computational intelligence research field. The fruits of the effort spent on the research in the discussed field are powerful techniques for pattern recognition, data mining, data modelling, etc. These techniques achieve high performance on traditional data sets like the UCI machine learning database. Unfortunately, this kind of data sources usually represent clean data without any problems like data outliers, missing values, feature co-linearity, etc. common to real-life industrial data. The presence of faulty data samples can have very harmful effects on the models, for example if presented during the training of the models, it can either cause sub-optimal performance of the trained model or in the worst case destroy the so far learnt knowledge of the model. For these reasons the application of present modelling techniques to industrial problems has developed into a research field on its own. Based on the discussion of the properties and issues of the data and the state-of-the-art modelling techniques in the process industry, in this paper a novel unified approach to the development of predictive models in the process industry is presented

    In the last two decades Soft Sensors established themselves as a valuable alternative to the traditional means for the acquisition of critical process variables, process monitoring and other tasks which are related to process control. This paper discusses characteristics of the process industry data which are critical for the development of data-driven Soft Sensors. These characteristics are common to a large number of process industry fields, like the chemical industry, bioprocess industry, steel industry, etc. The focus of this work is put on the data-driven Soft Sensors because of their growing popularity, already demonstrated usefulness and huge, though yet not completely realised, potential. A comprehensive selection of case studies covering the three most important Soft Sensor application fields, a general introduction to the most popular Soft Sensor modelling techniques as well as a discussion of some open issues in the Soft Sensor development and maintenance and their possible solutions are the main contributions of this work

    A novel Big Data analytics and intelligent technique to predict driver's intent

    Modern age offers a great potential for automatically predicting the driver's intent through the increasing miniaturization of computing technologies, rapid advancements in communication technologies and continuous connectivity of heterogeneous smart objects. Inside the cabin and engine of modern cars, dedicated computer systems need to possess the ability to exploit the wealth of information generated by heterogeneous data sources with different contextual and conceptual representations. Processing and utilizing this diverse and voluminous data, involves many challenges concerning the design of the computational technique used to perform this task. In this paper, we investigate the various data sources available in the car and the surrounding environment, which can be utilized as inputs in order to predict driver's intent and behavior. As part of investigating these potential data sources, we conducted experiments on e-calendars for a large number of employees, and have reviewed a number of available geo referencing systems. Through the results of a statistical analysis and by computing location recognition accuracy results, we explored in detail the potential utilization of calendar location data to detect the driver's intentions. In order to exploit the numerous diverse data inputs available in modern vehicles, we investigate the suitability of different Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques, and propose a novel fuzzy computational modelling methodology. Finally, we outline the impact of applying advanced CI and Big Data analytics techniques in modern vehicles on the driver and society in general, and discuss ethical and legal issues arising from the deployment of intelligent self-learning cars
