Destinations are at the heart of travel decisions, and destination image has a significant influence on tourists’ decision-making. Many travelers acquire information via the Internet, which offers abundant information and an increasing number of tourism-related services. The impact of media coverage on destination image has attracted research attention and became particularly evident during the 2003 outbreak of SARS, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. Building upon previous research, this paper analyzes the prevalence of tourism destinations among 162 international media sites. Measuring term frequency investigates the attention a destination receives – from a general and, after contextual filtering, from a tourism perspective. Calculating the semantic orientation estimates positive or negative media influences on destination image at a given point in time. By detecting associations with country names, keyword analysis reveals the countries' public profile, and the impact of events on media coverage

The Advent of Semantic Web in Tourism Information Systems

The tourism industry depends on complex value creation chains involving a large number of participants that change frequently and rapidly. In addition, the products of tourism industry are complex and they will perish if they are not sold in time. For these reasons, the ideal tourism information systems require a lot of flexibility of underlying systems. Moreover, they comprise accurate access to any tourism service that provide, and they are usable by corporate and private customers alike. The management and interoperation of semantically diverse tourism information systems are facilitated by Semantic Web technology that provides methods and standards, which allow accurate access to information as well as flexibility to comply with needs of tourism information system users and administrators. This paper considers state-of-the art issues (ontologies, semantic modelling and querying, semantic portals and semantic-based e-markets) concerning the exploitation of the semantic web technologies and applications in tourism information systems

ABSTRACT: This paper will focus on a tourism web portal whose aim is to offer ideas and suggestions about tourist destinations and routes. Inspired on Web 2.0, collaborative mechanisms are used to allow users to share their opinion with the community, thus encouraging their critical voice. Two factions of the Semantic Web are analysed comparatively – Uppercase and lowercase – with the purpose of identifying which one fulfills the purposes of the proposed system best. lowercase semantic web was shown to be the ideal solution, and its implementation was demonstrated with the use of microformats. A discussion was also initiated regarding a new microformat for tourist routes: itinerary

The Semantic Web as the next generation web is the vision of having background knowledge about the meaning of web sources stored in a machine-processable and -interpretable way. The area of tourism is highly dynamic area that currently already extensively uses the available Internet technologies. However, the shortcomings of the existing technology are that information finding and extraction as well as the interpretation of the information contained in the web sources is left to the human user. In this paper it is shown how the vision of the Semantic Web and already existing Semantic Web technologies can be used for next-generation tourism information systems
