    Indoor wireless communications and applications

    Chapter 3 addresses challenges in radio link and system design in indoor scenarios. Given the fact that most human activities take place in indoor environments, the need for supporting ubiquitous indoor data connectivity and location/tracking service becomes even more important than in the previous decades. Specific technical challenges addressed in this section are(i), modelling complex indoor radio channels for effective antenna deployment, (ii), potential of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radios for supporting higher data rates, and (iii), feasible indoor localisation and tracking techniques, which are summarised in three dedicated sections of this chapter

    Wideband harmonic radar detection

    Radio sites consist naturally of metallic structures. Metals are always covered by an oxide film due to the metal reacting chemically with the oxygen in air. The rate of this oxide formation depends largely on the environment. Any oxide film between metallic contacts will cause non-linearity. RF currents passing through these junctions would generate harmonics. When RF signals at two frequencies fl and f2 pass-through a non-linearity they create signals at their sum and difference frequencies. These are known as 'inter-modulation products'. This generation of inter-modulation products when radio waves interact with rusty parts is called as the 'Rusty Bolt Effect'. Radio spectrum is carefully controlled for optimal usage of the available frequencies so that different services operate in well-defined frequency channels. Ofcom has set some standards for radio site engineering. This set of standards is given in the document 'MPT 1331: Code of Practice for Radio Site Engineering'. Any transmission site which is not following these codes would likely cause interference to other users. It is important that radio engineers should check the sites for their compliance with these codes. If a particular radio site is causing interference due to the rusty-bolt effect, the corroded points must be located to minimize their effect using a Harmonic Radar. A 'Harmonic Radar' is a device that illuminates a region of space with RF waves and receives the harmonics of the transmitted frequencies. The received data can then be processed to find the exact location and mobility of the points causing the generation of these harmonics. It works on the principle of radar transmitting a chirp signal and receiving harmonics of the transmitting frequency. Work is currently being carried out at the 'Centre for Communication Systems' in Durham University funded by HMGCC on the design and implementation of a novel Wideband Harmonic Radar system.     Algorithms for Positioning with Nonlinear Measurement Models and Heavy-tailed and Asymmetric Distributed Additive Noise

    Determining the unknown position of a user equipment using measurements obtained from transmitters with known locations generally results in a nonlinear measurement function. The measurement errors can have a heavy-tailed and/ or skewed distribution, and the likelihood function can be multimodal.A positioning problem with a nonlinear measurement function is often solved by a nonlinear least squares (NLS) method or, when ïŹltering is desired, by an extended Kalman ïŹlter (EKF). However, these methods are unable to capture multiple peaks of the likelihood function and do not address heavy-tailedness or skewness. Approximating the likelihood by a Gaussian mixture (GM) and using a GM ïŹlter (GMF) solves the problem. The drawback is that the approximation requires a large number of components in the GM for a precise approximation, which makes it unsuitable for real-time positioning on small mobile devices.This thesis studies a generalised version of Gaussian mixtures, which is called GGM, to capture multiple peaks. It relaxes the GM’s restriction to non-negative component weights. The analysis shows that the GGM allows a signiïŹcant reduction of the number of required Gaussian components when applied for approximating the measurement likelihood of a transmitter with an isotropic antenna, compared with the GM. Therefore, the GGM facilitates real-time positioning in small mobile devices. In tests for a cellular telephone network and for an ultra-wideband network the GGM and its ïŹlter provide signiïŹcantly better positioning accuracy than the NLS and the EKF.For positioning with nonlinear measurement models, and heavytailed and skewed distributed measurement errors, an Expectation Maximisation (EM) algorithm is studied. The EM algorithm is compared with a standard NLS algorithm in simulations and tests with realistic emulated data from a long term evolution network. The EM algorithm is more robust to measurement outliers. If the errors in training and positioning data are similar distributed, then the EM algorithm yields signiïŹcantly better position estimates than the NLS method. The improvement in accuracy and precision comes at the cost of moderately higher computational demand and higher vulnerability to changing patterns in the error distribution (of training and positioning data). This vulnerability is caused by the fact that the skew-t distribution (used in EM) has 4 parameters while the normal distribution (used in NLS) has only 2. Hence the skew-t yields a closer ïŹt than the normal distribution of the pattern in the training data. However, on the downside if patterns in training and positioning data vary than the skew-t ïŹt is not necessarily a better ïŹt than the normal ïŹt, which weakens the EM algorithm’s positioning accuracy and precision. This concept of reduced generalisability due to overïŹtting is a basic rule of machine learning.This thesis additionally shows how parameters of heavy-tailed and skewed error distributions can be ïŹtted to training data. It furthermore gives an overview on other parametric methods for solving the positioning method, how training data is handled and summarised for them, how positioning is done by them, and how they compare with nonparametric methods. These methods are analysed by extensive tests in a wireless area network, which shows the strength and weaknesses of each method

    Characterisation of MIMO radio propagation channels

    Due to the incessant requirement for higher performance radio systems, wireless designers have been constantly seeking ways to improve spectrum efficiency, link reliability, service quality, and radio network coverage. During the past few years, space-time technology which employs multiple antennas along with suitable signalling schemes and receiver architectures has been seen as a powerful tool for the implementation of the aforementioned requirements. In particular, the concept of communications via Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) links has emerged as one of the major contending ideas for next generation ad-hoc and cellular systems. This is inherently due to the capacities expected when multiple antennas are employed at both ends of the radio link. Such a mobile radio propagation channel constitutes a MIMO system. Multiple antenna technologies and in particular MIMO signalling are envisaged for a number of standards such as the next generation of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology known as 802.1 ln and the development of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) project, such as the 802.16e. For the efficient design, performance evaluation and deployment of such multiple antenna (space-time) systems, it becomes increasingly important to understand the characteristics of the spatial radio channel. This criterion has led to the development of new sounding systems, which can measure both spatial and temporal channel information. In this thesis, a novel semi-sequential wideband MIMO sounder is presented, which is suitable for high-resolution radio channel measurements. The sounder produces a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) or chirp signal with variable bandwidth, centre frequency and waveform repetition rate. It has programmable bandwidth up to 300 MHz and waveform repetition rates up to 300 Hz, and could be used to measure conventional high- resolution delay/Doppler information as well as spatial channel information such as Direction of Arrival (DOA) and Direction of Departure (DOD). Notably the knowledge of the angular information at the link ends could be used to properly design and develop systems such as smart antennas. This thesis examines the theory of multiple antenna propagation channels, the sounding architecture required for the measurement of such spatial channel information and the signal processing which is used to quantify and analyse such measurement data. Over 700 measurement files were collected corresponding to over 175,000 impulse responses with different sounder and antenna array configurations. These included measurements in the Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems Frequency Division Duplex (UMTS-FDD) uplink band, the 2.25 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands allocated for studio broadcast MIMO video links, and the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz ISM bands allocated for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) activity as well as for a wide range of future systems defined in the WiMAX project. The measurements were collected predominantly for indoor and some outdoor multiple antenna channels using sounding signals with 60 MHz, 96 MHz and 240 MHz bandwidth. A wide range of different MIMO antenna array configurations are examined in this thesis with varying space, time and frequency resolutions. Measurements can be generally subdivided into three main categories, namely measurements at different locations in the environment (static), measurements while moving at regular intervals step by step (spatial), and measurements while the receiver (or transmitter) is on the move (dynamic).     Faced with an ever increasing demand of high data-rates and improved adaptability among existing systems, which inturn is resulting in spectrum scarcity, the development of new radio solutions becomes mandatory in order to answer the requirements of these emergent applications. Among the recent innovations in the field of wireless communications,ultra wideband (UWB) has generated significant interest. Impulse based UWB (IR-UWB) is one attractive way of realizing UWB systems, which is characterized by the transmission of sub nanoseconds UWB pulses, occupying a band width up to 7.5 GHz with extremely low power density. This large band width results in several captivating features such as low-complexity low-cost transceiver, ability to overlay existing narrowband systems, ample multipath diversity, and precise ranging at centimeter level due to extremely fine temporal resolution.In this PhD dissertation, we investigate some of the key elements in the realization of an intelligent time-hopping based IR-UWB system. Due to striking resemblance of IR-UWB inherent features with cognitive radio (CR) requirements, acognitive UWB based system is first studied. A CR in its simplest form can be described as a radio, which is aware ofits surroundings and adapts intelligently. As sensing the environment for the availability of resources and then consequently adapting radio’s internal parameters to exploit them opportunistically constitute the major blocks of any CR, we first focus on robust spectrum sensing algorithms and the design of adaptive UWB waveforms for realizing a cognitive UWB radio. The spectrum sensing module needs to function with minimum a-priori knowledge available about the operating characteristics and detect the primary users as quickly as possible. Keeping this in mind, we develop several spectrum sensing algorithms invoking recent results on the random matrix theory, which can provide efficient performance with a few number of samples. Next, we design the UWB waveform using a linear combination of Bsp lines with weight coefficients being optimized by genetic algorithms. This results in a UWB waveform that is spectrally efficient and at the same time adaptable to incorporate the cognitive radio requirements. In the 2nd part of this thesis, some research challenges related to signal processing in UWB systems, namely synchronization and dense multipath channel estimation are addressed. Several low-complexity non-data-aided (NDA) synchronization algorithms are proposed for BPSK and PSM modulations, exploiting either the orthogonality of UWB waveforms or theinherent cyclostationarity of IR-UWB signaling. Finally, we look into the channel estimation problem in UWB, whichis very demanding due to particular nature of UWB channels and at the same time very critical for the coherent Rake receivers. A method based on a joint maximum-likelihood (ML) and orthogonal subspace (OS) approaches is proposed which exhibits improved performance than both of these methods individually.Face Ă  une demande sans cesse croissante de haut dĂ©bit et d’adaptabilitĂ© des systĂšmes existants, qui Ă  son tour se traduit par l’encombrement du spectre, le dĂ©veloppement de nouvelles solutions dans le domaine des communications sans fil devient nĂ©cessaire afin de rĂ©pondre aux exigences des applications Ă©mergentes. Parmi les innovations rĂ©centes dans ce domaine, l’ultra large bande (UWB) a suscitĂ© un vif intĂ©rĂȘt. La radio impulsionnelle UWB (IR-UWB), qui est une solution intĂ©ressante pour rĂ©aliser des systĂšmes UWB, est caractĂ©risĂ©e par la transmission des impulsions de trĂšs courte durĂ©e, occupant une largeur de bande allant jusqu’à 7,5 GHz, avec une densitĂ© spectrale de puissance extrĂȘmement faible. Cette largeur de bande importante permet de rĂ©aliser plusieurs fonctionnalitĂ©s intĂ©ressantes, telles que l’implĂ©mentation Ă  faible complexitĂ© et Ă  coĂ»t rĂ©duit, la possibilitĂ© de se superposer aux systĂšmes Ă  bande Ă©troite, la diversitĂ© spatiale et la localisation trĂšs prĂ©cise de l’ordre centimĂ©trique, en raison de la rĂ©solution temporelle trĂšs fine.Dans cette thĂšse, nous examinons certains Ă©lĂ©ments clĂ©s dans la rĂ©alisation d'un systĂšme IR-UWB intelligent. Nous avons tout d’abord proposĂ© le concept de radio UWB cognitive Ă  partir des similaritĂ©s existantes entre l'IR-UWB et la radio cognitive. Dans sa dĂ©finition la plus simple, un tel systĂšme est conscient de son environnement et s'y adapte intelligemment. Ainsi, nous avons tout d’abord focalisĂ© notre recherchĂ© sur l’analyse de la disponibilitĂ© des ressources spectrales (spectrum sensing) et la conception d’une forme d’onde UWB adaptative, considĂ©rĂ©es comme deux Ă©tapes importantes dans la rĂ©alisation d'une radio cognitive UWB. Les algorithmes de spectrum sensing devraient fonctionner avec un minimum de connaissances a priori et dĂ©tecter rapidement les utilisateurs primaires. Nous avons donc dĂ©veloppĂ© de tels algorithmes utilisant des rĂ©sultats rĂ©cents sur la thĂ©orie des matrices alĂ©atoires, qui sont capables de fournir de bonnes performances, avec un petit nombre d'Ă©chantillons. Ensuite, nous avons proposĂ© une mĂ©thode de conception de la forme d'onde UWB, vue comme une superposition de fonctions B-splines, dont les coefficients de pondĂ©ration sont optimisĂ©s par des algorithmes gĂ©nĂ©tiques. Il en rĂ©sulte une forme d'onde UWB qui est spectralement efficace et peut s’adapter pour intĂ©grer les contraintes liĂ©es Ă  la radio cognitive. Dans la 2Ăšme partie de cette thĂšse, nous nous sommes attaquĂ©s Ă  deux autres problĂ©matiques importantes pour le fonctionnement des systĂšmes UWB, Ă  savoir la synchronisation et l’estimation du canal UWB, qui est trĂšs dense en trajets multiples. Ainsi, nous avons proposĂ© plusieurs algorithmes de synchronisation, de faible complexitĂ© et sans sĂ©quence d’apprentissage, pour les modulations BPSK et PSM, en exploitant l'orthogonalitĂ© des formes d'onde UWB ou la cyclostationnaritĂ© inhĂ©rente Ă  la signalisation IR-UWB. Enfin, nous avons travaillĂ© sur l'estimation du canal UWB, qui est un Ă©lĂ©ment critique pour les rĂ©cepteurs Rake cohĂ©rents.     Localisation and tracking of people using distributed UWB sensors

    In vielen Überwachungs- und Rettungsszenarien ist die Lokalisierung und Verfolgung von Personen in InnenrĂ€umen auf nichtkooperative Weise erforderlich. FĂŒr die Erkennung von Objekten durch WĂ€nde in kurzer bis mittlerer Entfernung, ist die Ultrabreitband (UWB) Radartechnologie aufgrund ihrer hohen zeitlichen Auflösung und DurchdringungsfĂ€higkeit Erfolg versprechend. In dieser Arbeit wird ein Prozess vorgestellt, mit dem Personen in InnenrĂ€umen mittels UWB-Sensoren lokalisiert werden können. Er umfasst neben der Erfassung von Messdaten, AbstandschĂ€tzungen und dem Erkennen von Mehrfachzielen auch deren Ortung und Verfolgung. Aufgrund der schwachen Reflektion von Personen im Vergleich zum Rest der Umgebung, wird zur Personenerkennung zuerst eine Hintergrundsubtraktionsmethode verwendet. Danach wird eine konstante Falschalarmrate Methode zur Detektion und AbstandschĂ€tzung von Personen angewendet. FĂŒr Mehrfachziellokalisierung mit einem UWB-Sensor wird eine Assoziationsmethode entwickelt, um die SchĂ€tzungen des Zielabstandes den richtigen Zielen zuzuordnen. In Szenarien mit mehreren Zielen kann es vorkommen, dass ein nĂ€her zum Sensor positioniertes Ziel ein anderes abschattet. Ein Konzept fĂŒr ein verteiltes UWB-Sensornetzwerk wird vorgestellt, in dem sich das Sichtfeld des Systems durch die Verwendung mehrerer Sensoren mit unterschiedlichen Blickfeldern erweitert lĂ€sst. Hierbei wurde ein Prototyp entwickelt, der durch Fusion von Sensordaten die Verfolgung von Mehrfachzielen in Echtzeit ermöglicht. Dabei spielen insbesondere auch Synchronisierungs- und Kooperationsaspekte eine entscheidende Rolle. Sensordaten können durch Zeitversatz und systematische Fehler gestört sein. Falschmessungen und Rauschen in den Messungen beeinflussen die Genauigkeit der SchĂ€tzergebnisse. Weitere Erkenntnisse ĂŒber die ZielzustĂ€nde können durch die Nutzung zeitlicher Informationen gewonnen werden. Ein Mehrfachzielverfolgungssystem wird auf der Grundlage des Wahrscheinlichkeitshypothesenfilters (Probability Hypothesis Density Filter) entwickelt, und die Unterschiede in der Systemleistung werden bezĂŒglich der von den Sensoren ausgegebene Informationen, d.h. die Fusion von Ortungsinformationen und die Fusion von Abstandsinformationen, untersucht. Die Information, dass ein Ziel detektiert werden sollte, wenn es aufgrund von Abschattungen durch andere Ziele im Szenario nicht erkannt wurde, wird als dynamische Überdeckungswahrscheinlichkeit beschrieben. Die dynamische Überdeckungswahrscheinlichkeit wird in das Verfolgungssystem integriert, wodurch weniger Sensoren verwendet werden können, wĂ€hrend gleichzeitig die Performanz des SchĂ€tzers in diesem Szenario verbessert wird. Bei der Methodenauswahl und -entwicklung wurde die Anforderung einer Echtzeitanwendung bei unbekannten Szenarien berĂŒcksichtigt. Jeder untersuchte Aspekt der Mehrpersonenlokalisierung wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit mit Hilfe von Simulationen und Messungen in einer realistischen Umgebung mit UWB Sensoren verifiziert.Indoor localisation and tracking of people in non-cooperative manner is important in many surveillance and rescue applications. Ultra wideband (UWB) radar technology is promising for through-wall detection of objects in short to medium distances due to its high temporal resolution and penetration capability. This thesis tackles the problem of localisation of people in indoor scenarios using UWB sensors. It follows the process from measurement acquisition, multiple target detection and range estimation to multiple target localisation and tracking. Due to the weak reflection of people compared to the rest of the environment, a background subtraction method is initially used for the detection of people. Subsequently, a constant false alarm rate method is applied for detection and range estimation of multiple persons. For multiple target localisation using a single UWB sensor, an association method is developed to assign target range estimates to the correct targets. In the presence of multiple targets it can happen that targets closer to the sensor induce shadowing over the environment hindering the detection of other targets. A concept for a distributed UWB sensor network is presented aiming at extending the field of view of the system by using several sensors with different fields of view. A real-time operational prototype has been developed taking into consideration sensor cooperation and synchronisation aspects, as well as fusion of the information provided by all sensors. Sensor data may be erroneous due to sensor bias and time offset. Incorrect measurements and measurement noise influence the accuracy of the estimation results. Additional insight of the targets states can be gained by exploiting temporal information. A multiple person tracking framework is developed based on the probability hypothesis density filter, and the differences in system performance are highlighted with respect to the information provided by the sensors i.e. location information fusion vs range information fusion. The information that a target should have been detected when it is not due to shadowing induced by other targets is described as dynamic occlusion probability. The dynamic occlusion probability is incorporated into the tracking framework, allowing fewer sensors to be used while improving the tracker performance in the scenario. The method selection and development has taken into consideration real-time application requirements for unknown scenarios at every step. Each investigated aspect of multiple person localization within the scope of this thesis has been verified using simulations and measurements in a realistic environment using M-sequence UWB sensors

    Through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI) is an emerging technology that aims to capture scenes behind walls and other visually opaque materials. The abilities to sense through walls are highly desirable for both military and civil applications, such as search and rescue missions, surveillance, and reconnaissance. TWRI systems, however, face with several challenges including prolonged data acquisition, large objects, strong wall clutter, and shadowing effects, which limit the radar imaging performances and hinder target detection and localization
