    A double dynamic fast algorithm to solve multi-vehicle Dial a Ride Problem

    Abstract In this work a two level heuristic algorithm is described for a nearly real-time multi-vehicle many-to-many Dial-A-Ride Problem (DARP). This algorithm is ready to support a Demand Responsive Transportation System in which we face the problem of quickly evaluate a good-quality schedule for the vehicles and provide fast response to the users. The insertion heuristic is double dynamic nearly real-time and the objective function is to minimize the variance between the requested and scheduled time of pickup and delivery. In the first level, after a customer web-request, the heuristic returns an answer about the possibility to insert the request into the accepted reservations, and therefore in a vehicle schedule, or reject the request. In the second level, during the time elapsed between a request and the following, and after a reshuffling of the order of the incoming accepted requests, the same heuristic works for the whole set of accepted requests, trying to optimize the solution. We intensively tested the algorithm with a requests-generating software that has allowed us to show the competitive advantage of this web-based architecture

    Model and algorithm for solving real time dial-a-ride problem

    This research studies a static and real-time dial-a-ride problem with time varying travel times, soft time windows, and multiple depots. First, a static DARP model is formulated as a mixed integer programming and in order to validate the model, several random small network problems are solved using commercial optimization package, CPLEX. Three heuristic algorithms based on sequential insertion, parallel insertion, and clustering first-routing second are proposed to solve static DARP within a reasonable time for implementation in a real-world situation. Also, the results of three heuristic methods are compared with the results obtained from exact solution by CPLEX to validate and evaluate three heuristic algorithms. Computational results show that three heuristic algorithms are superior compared to the exact algorithm in terms of the calculation time as the problem size (in terms of the number of demands) increases. Also among the three heuristic algorithms, the heuristic algorithm based on sequential insertion is more efficient than other heuristic algorithms that are based on parallel insertion and clustering first-routing second. For the case study, Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)'s real operation of Dial-a-ride service is introduced and compared with the results of developed heuristic. The objective function values from heuristic based on clustering first- routing second are better than those from MTA's operation for all cases when waiting cost, delay cost, and excess ride cost are not included in the objective function values. Also, the algorithm for real-time DARP considering dynamic events such as customer no shows, accidents, cancellations, and new requests is developed based on static DARP. The algorithm is tested in a simulation framework. In the simulation test, we compared the results of cases according to degree of gap between expected link speeds and real link speeds. Also for competitive analysis, the results of dynamic case are compared with the results of static case, where all requests are known in advance. The simulation test shows that the heuristic method could save cost as the uncertainty in new requests increases

    A Flexible Transport Service for Passengers

    AbstractThe realization of innovative passengers transport services requires more and more often a greater flexibility and inexpensiveness of the service. To answer this request in many cases the physical solution is to realize a demand responsive transportation system (DRTS). A DRTS require the planning of travel paths (routing) and customers pick-up and drop-off times (scheduling) according to received requests, respecting the limited capacity of the fleet and time constraints (hard time windows) for each network's node, and the service time of the system. By the modelling point of view a DRTS can be effectively represented with a Dial-a-ride problem (DaRP). A DaRP derives from the Pick-up and Delivery Problem with Time Windows (PDPTW) and may operate according to a static or to a dynamic mode. In the static setting, all customers’ requests are known beforehand and the DaRP returns the vehicles routing and the passengers pick up and drop off time scheduling. The static setting may be representative of a phase of reservation occurred the day before the execution of the service. But, if the reservation requests must be processed on-line, even during the booking process there may be a certain level ad dynamism. In fact, if the algorithm works online, it manages each and every incoming request separately, and accepts or refuses it immediately, without knowing anything about the following. The operative program is constantly updated after each received request without refusal to carry out previous accepted services. In the dynamic mode, customers’ requests arrive when the service is already running and, consequently, the solution may change whilst the vehicle is already travelling. In this mode it is necessary that the schedule is updated when each new request arrives and that this is done in a short time to ensure that the potential customer will not leave the system before a possible answer. In this work, we describe a flexible people transport system capable of managing incoming transport demand in dynamic mode, using a solution architecture based on a two-stage algorithm to solve Dial-a-Ride Problem instances. In the first stage, a constructive heuristic algorithm quickly provides a feasible solution to accept the incoming demand. The algorithm in the second stage try to improve the solution evaluated at the first stage by using the time between two consecutive transportation events. The algorithm, unlike most of the works in the literature, use an objective function that optimizes the service punctuality

    Vehicle Minimization for the Multimodal Pickup and Delivery Problem with Time Windows

    The algorithm proposed here is used for heuristic solutions for the Multimodal Multiple Vehicle Routing Problem with Unloading Capacity, Pickup and Dropoff, and Time Windows, solved so as to minimize the number of vehicles used, subject to varying objective function values for each vehicle. The MVRP is simplified and split into a routing problem and a scheduling problem. The routing problem is addressed by Dijkstra\u27s Algorithm. This generates a new network for the second stage of the algorithm. It is assumed that the shortest path is the correct path to use, and shipments each travel unimodally. The scheduling problem is addressed by treating the various paths as though they were machines, with vehicle number being treated approximately as capacity for the machines, and unloading capacity being treated as a second stage in the processing. The problem is analyzed by assigning all shipments which can be assigned elsewhere away from the most expensive mode and then assigning only leftover shipments to the most expensive mode. Multiple resolutions of the scheduling problem result in feasible solutions for less expensive modes, which results in a feasible solution for every mode, and a low cost solution in terms of vehicles used

    Parallelization of Dial-a-Ride Using Tabu Search

    Dial-A-Ride is a transport system heavily constrained by following fleet size, vehicle capacity, and a fixed number of requests (pickup and drop-off points) with time windows. It is often modelled as Integer Programming, various solutions are proposed using heuristics. One such heuristic is Tabu Search . Tabu Search is very CPU intensive with its process of search, therefore many modern computing techniques like using GPUs have been employed to make it efficient. As with many other greedy algorithms, the local optima is not always the same as the global optima, so it is not possible to go past the local optima using greedy techniques for this problem. It is often modelled as Integer Programming, with the search space being very big, there are proven to not be so efficient. So, many heuristics have been proposed in the past, one such heuristic is Tabu Search . The local search of this heuristic uses memory to keep track of recent moves made and tries to avoid them for specified iterations (marks as Tabu) and also continues to explore the neighbourhood search space even with the degradation optimization function value, thus helping the algorithm to go past the local optima towards global optima. This thesis focuses on limitations of parallelizing DARP-TS for multi-core CPU, discussing major factors like (i) number of good moves in the neighbourhood and how we can estimate a value for N\_SIZE (number of parallel moves to make in each iteration), (ii) difference between a CPU core and a GPU core in the context of thread scheduling, memory layout and memory limitations, (iii) proposes few data-structures to keep the memory allocations low thus reducing the time for garbage collection and (iv) proposes an incremental way of calculating the value of optimization function in the local search phase which helps in mapping the execution and evaluation of N\_SIZE moves in each iteration onto the multiple CPU cores

    Data analytics and optimization for assessing a ride sharing system

    Ride-sharing schemes attempt to reduce road traffic by matching prospective passengers to drivers with spare seats in their cars. To be successful, such schemes require a critical mass of drivers and passengers. In current deployed implementations, the possible matches are based on heuristics, rather than real route times or distances. In some cases, the heuristics propose infeasible matches; in others, feasible matches are omitted. Poor ride matching is likely to deter participants from using the system. We develop a constraint-based model for acceptable ride matches which incorporates route plans and time windows. Through data analytics on a history of advertised schedules and agreed shared trips, we infer parameters for this model that account for 90% of agreed trips. By applying the inferred model to the advertised schedules, we demonstrate that there is an imbalance between riders and passengers. We assess the potential benefits of persuading existing drivers to switch to becoming passengers if appropriate matches can be found, by solving the inferred model with and without switching. We demonstrate that flexible participation has the potential to reduce the number of unmatched participants by up to 80%

    Dispatching Requests for Agent-Based Online Vehicle Routing Problems with Time Windows

    Vehicle routing problems are highly complex problems. The proposals to solve them traditionally concern the optimization of conventional criteria, such as the number of mobilized vehicles and the total costs. However, in online vehicle routing problems, the optimization of the response time to the connected travelers is at least as important as the optimization of the classical criteria. Multi-agent systems on the one hand and greedy insertion heuristics on the other are among the most promising approaches to this end. In this paper, we propose a multi-agent system coupled with a regret insertion heuristic. We focus on the real-time dispatching of the travelers\u27 requests to the vehicles and its efficiency. A dispatching protocol determines which agents perform the computation to answer the travelers\u27 requests. We evaluate three dispatching protocols: centralized, decentralized and hybrid. We compare them experimentally based on their response time to online travelers. Two computational types are implemented: a sequential implementation and a distributed implementation. The results show the superiority of the centralized dispatching protocol in the sequential implementation (32.80% improvement in average compared to the distributed dispatching protocol) and the superiority of the hybrid dispatching protocol in the distributed implementation (59.66% improvement in average, compared with the centralized dispatching protocol)
