    Scalable Speech Coding for IP Networks

    The emergence of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has posed new challenges to the development of speech codecs. The key issue of transporting real-time voice packet over IP networks is the lack of guarantee for reasonable speech quality due to packet delay or loss. Most of the widely used narrowband codecs depend on the Code Excited Linear Prediction (CELP) coding technique. The CELP technique utilizes the long-term prediction across the frame boundaries and therefore causes error propagation in the case of packet loss and need to transmit redundant information in order to mitigate the problem. The internet Low Bit-rate Codec (iLBC) employs the frame-independent coding and therefore inherently possesses high robustness to packet loss. However, the original iLBC lacks in some of the key features of speech codecs for IP networks: Rate flexibility, Scalability, and Wideband support. This dissertation presents novel scalable narrowband and wideband speech codecs for IP networks using the frame independent coding scheme based on the iLBC. The rate flexibility is added to the iLBC by employing the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and iii the scalable algebraic vector quantization (AVQ) and by allocating different number of bits to the AVQ. The bit-rate scalability is obtained by adding the enhancement layer to the core layer of the multi-rate iLBC. The enhancement layer encodes the weighted iLBC coding error in the modified DCT (MDCT) domain. The proposed wideband codec employs the bandwidth extension technique to extend the capabilities of existing narrowband codecs to provide wideband coding functionality. The wavelet transform is also used to further enhance the performance of the proposed codec. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed codec provides high robustness to packet loss and achieves equivalent or higher speech quality than state-of-the-art codecs under the clean channel condition

    Parametric dictionary design for sparse coding

    Abstract—This paper introduces a new dictionary design method for sparse coding of a class of signals. It has been shown that one can sparsely approximate some natural signals using an overcomplete set of parametric functions, e.g. [1], [2]. A problem in using these parametric dictionaries is how to choose the parameters. In practice these parameters have been chosen by an expert or through a set of experiments. In the sparse approximation context, it has been shown that an incoherent dictionary is appropriate for the sparse approximation methods. In this paper we first characterize the dictionary design problem, subject to a constraint on the dictionary. Then we briefly explain that equiangular tight frames have minimum coherence. The complexity of the problem does not allow it to be solved exactly. We introduce a practical method to approximately solve it. Some experiments show the advantages one gets by using these dictionaries

    Scalable and perceptual audio compression

    This thesis deals with scalable perceptual audio compression. Two scalable perceptual solutions as well as a scalable to lossless solution are proposed and investigated. One of the scalable perceptual solutions is built around sinusoidal modelling of the audio signal whilst the other is built on a transform coding paradigm. The scalable coders are shown to scale both in a waveform matching manner as well as a psychoacoustic manner. In order to measure the psychoacoustic scalability of the systems investigated in this thesis, the similarity between the original signal\u27s psychoacoustic parameters and that of the synthesized signal are compared. The psychoacoustic parameters used are loudness, sharpness, tonahty and roughness. This analysis technique is a novel method used in this thesis and it allows an insight into the perceptual distortion that has been introduced by any coder analyzed in this manner

    Wavelet Filter Banks in Perceptual Audio Coding

    This thesis studies the application of the wavelet filter bank (WFB) in perceptual audio coding by providing brief overviews of perceptual coding, psychoacoustics, wavelet theory, and existing wavelet coding algorithms. Furthermore, it describes the poor frequency localization property of the WFB and explores one filter design method, in particular, for improving channel separation between the wavelet bands. A wavelet audio coder has also been developed by the author to test the new filters. Preliminary tests indicate that the new filters provide some improvement over other wavelet filters when coding audio signals that are stationary-like and contain only a few harmonic components, and similar results for other types of audio signals that contain many spectral and temporal components. It has been found that the WFB provides a flexible decomposition scheme through the choice of the tree structure and basis filter, but at the cost of poor localization properties. This flexibility can be a benefit in the context of audio coding but the poor localization properties represent a drawback. Determining ways to fully utilize this flexibility, while minimizing the effects of poor time-frequency localization, is an area that is still very much open for research

    Efficiency in audio processing : filter banks and transcoding

    Audio transcoding is the conversion of digital audio from one compressed form A to another compressed form B, where A and B have different compression properties, such as a different bit-rate, sampling frequency or compression method. This is typically achieved by decoding A to an intermediate uncompressed form, and then encoding it to B. A significant portion of the involved computational effort pertains to operating the synthesis filter bank, which is an important processing block in the decoding stage, and the analysis filter bank, which is an important processing block in the encoding stage. This thesis presents methods for efficient implementations of filter banks and audio transcoders, and is separated into two main parts. In the first part, a new class of Frequency Response Masking (FRM) filter banks is introduced. These filter banks are usually characterized by comprising a tree-structured cascade of subfilters, which have small individual filter lengths. Methods of complexity reduction are proposed for the scenarios when the filter banks are operated in single-rate mode, and when they are operated in multirate mode; and for the scenarios when the input signal is real-valued, and when it is complex-valued. An efficient variable bandwidth FRM filter bank is designed by using signed-powers-of-two reduction of its subfilter coefficients. Our design has a complexity an order lower than that of an octave filter bank with the same specifications. In the second part, the audio transcoding process is analyzed. Audio transcoding is modeled as a cascaded quantization process, and the cascaded quantization of an input signal is analyzed under different conditions, for the MPEG 1 Layer 2 and MP3 compression methods. One condition is the input-to-output delay of the transcoder, which is known to have an impact on the audio quality of the transcoded material. Methods to reduce the error in a cascaded quantization process are also proposed. An ultra-fast MP3 transcoder that requires only integer operations is proposed and implemented in software. Our implementation shows an improvement by a factor of 5 to 16 over other best known transcoders in terms of execution speed

    In recent years there has been a phenomenal increase in the number of products and applications which make use of audio coding formats. Amongthe most successful audio coding schemes, the MPEG-1 Layer III (mp3), the MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) or its evolution MPEG-4High Efficiency-Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) can be cited. More recently, perceptual audio coding has been adapted to achieve codingat low-delay such to become suitable for conversational applications. Traditionally, the use of filter bank such as the Modified Discrete CosineTransform (MDCT) is a central component of perceptual audio coding and its adaptation to low delay audio coding has become an important researchtopic. Low delay transforms have been developed in order to retain the performance of standard audio coding while reducing dramatically the associated algorithmic delay.This work presents some elements allowing to better accommodate the delay reduction constraint. Among the contributions, a low delay blockswitching tool which allows the direct transition between long transform and short transform without the insertion of transition window. The sameprinciple has been extended to define new perfect reconstruction conditions for the MDCT with relaxed constraints compared to the original definition.As a consequence, a seamless reconstruction method has been derived to increase the flexibility of transform coding schemes with the possibility toselect a transform for a frame independently from its neighbouring frames. Finally, based on this new approach, a new low delay window design procedure has been derived to obtain an analytic definition for a new family of transforms, permitting high quality with a substantial coding delay reduction. The performance of the proposed transforms has been thoroughly evaluated, an evaluation framework involving an objective measurement of the optimal transform sequence is proposed. It confirms the relevance of the proposed transforms used for audio coding. In addition, the new approaches have been successfully applied to the recent standardisation work items, such as the low delay audio coding developed at MPEG (LD-AAC and ELD-AAC) and they have been evaluated with numerous subjective testing, showing a significant improvement of the quality for transient signals. Dies erlaubt ein stark vereinfachtes Programmiermodell bei gleichzeitiger Effizienzsteigerung.
