    Using Fuzzy Logic to Enhance Stereo Matching in Multiresolution Images

    Stereo matching is an open problem in Computer Vision, for which local features are extracted to identify corresponding points in pairs of images. The results are heavily dependent on the initial steps. We apply image decomposition in multiresolution levels, for reducing the search space, computational time, and errors. We propose a solution to the problem of how deep (coarse) should the stereo measures start, trading between error minimization and time consumption, by starting stereo calculation at varying resolution levels, for each pixel, according to fuzzy decisions. Our heuristic enhances the overall execution time since it only employs deeper resolution levels when strictly necessary. It also reduces errors because it measures similarity between windows with enough details. We also compare our algorithm with a very fast multi-resolution approach, and one based on fuzzy logic. Our algorithm performs faster and/or better than all those approaches, becoming, thus, a good candidate for robotic vision applications.     A survey on computer vision technology in Camera Based ETA devices

    Electronic Travel Aid systems are expected to make impaired persons able to perform their everyday tasks such as finding an object and avoiding obstacles easier. Among ETA devices, Camera Based ETA devices are the new one and with a high potential for helping Visually Impaired Persons. With recent advances in computer science and specially computer vision, Camera Based ETA devices used several computer vision algorithms and techniques such as object recognition and stereo vision in order to help VIP to perform tasks such as reading banknotes, recognizing people and avoiding obstacles. This paper analyses and appraises a number of literatures in this area with focus on stereo vision technique. Finally, after discussing about the methods and techniques used in different literatures, it is concluded that the stereo vision is the best technique for helping VIP in their everyday navigation

    Real-time object detection using monocular vision for low-cost automotive sensing systems

    This work addresses the problem of real-time object detection in automotive environments using monocular vision. The focus is on real-time feature detection, tracking, depth estimation using monocular vision and finally, object detection by fusing visual saliency and depth information. Firstly, a novel feature detection approach is proposed for extracting stable and dense features even in images with very low signal-to-noise ratio. This methodology is based on image gradients, which are redefined to take account of noise as part of their mathematical model. Each gradient is based on a vector connecting a negative to a positive intensity centroid, where both centroids are symmetric about the centre of the area for which the gradient is calculated. Multiple gradient vectors define a feature with its strength being proportional to the underlying gradient vector magnitude. The evaluation of the Dense Gradient Features (DeGraF) shows superior performance over other contemporary detectors in terms of keypoint density, tracking accuracy, illumination invariance, rotation invariance, noise resistance and detection time. The DeGraF features form the basis for two new approaches that perform dense 3D reconstruction from a single vehicle-mounted camera. The first approach tracks DeGraF features in real-time while performing image stabilisation with minimal computational cost. This means that despite camera vibration the algorithm can accurately predict the real-world coordinates of each image pixel in real-time by comparing each motion-vector to the ego-motion vector of the vehicle. The performance of this approach has been compared to different 3D reconstruction methods in order to determine their accuracy, depth-map density, noise-resistance and computational complexity. The second approach proposes the use of local frequency analysis of i ii gradient features for estimating relative depth. This novel method is based on the fact that DeGraF gradients can accurately measure local image variance with subpixel accuracy. It is shown that the local frequency by which the centroid oscillates around the gradient window centre is proportional to the depth of each gradient centroid in the real world. The lower computational complexity of this methodology comes at the expense of depth map accuracy as the camera velocity increases, but it is at least five times faster than the other evaluated approaches. This work also proposes a novel technique for deriving visual saliency maps by using Division of Gaussians (DIVoG). In this context, saliency maps express the difference of each image pixel is to its surrounding pixels across multiple pyramid levels. This approach is shown to be both fast and accurate when evaluated against other state-of-the-art approaches. Subsequently, the saliency information is combined with depth information to identify salient regions close to the host vehicle. The fused map allows faster detection of high-risk areas where obstacles are likely to exist. As a result, existing object detection algorithms, such as the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) can execute at least five times faster. In conclusion, through a step-wise approach computationally-expensive algorithms have been optimised or replaced by novel methodologies to produce a fast object detection system that is aligned to the requirements of the automotive domain

    Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition, this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes. The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies. (II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision. Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle, and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver. (III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints. All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms. Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy of the UAVs for real-world applications.El objetivo principal de esta tesis es proporcionar Vehiculos Aereos no Tripulados (UAVs) con un sistema de navegacion robusto, para permitir a los UAVs realizar tareas complejas de forma autonoma y en tiempo real. Los algoritmos propuestos tratan de resolver problemas de la navegacion tanto en ambientes interiores como al aire libre basandose principalmente en la informacion visual captada por las camaras monoculares. Ademas, esta tesis doctoral presenta la ventaja de usar sensores visuales bien como fuente principal de datos o complementando a otros sensores en el suministro de informacion util, con el fin de mejorar la precision y la robustez de los procesos de deteccion. La tesis cubre, principalmente, varios temas de investigacion basados en tecnicas de vision por computador: (I) Estimacion de la Posicion y la Orientacion (Pose), para proporcionar una solucion a la estimacion de la posicion y orientacion en 6D del UAV. Este algoritmo se basa en la combinacion del detector SIFT y el descriptor FREAK, que mantiene el desempeno del a funcion de puntos de coincidencia y disminuye el tiempo computacional. De esta manera, se soluciona el problema de la estimacion de la posicion basandose en la descomposicion de las homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion colisiones, donde el UAV es capaz de percibir y detectar los obstaculos frontales que se encuentran en su camino. El algoritmo de deteccion imita comportamientos humanos para detectar los obstaculos que se acercan, mediante el analisis de la magnitud del cambio de los puntos caracteristicos detectados de referencia, combinado con los ratios de expansion de los contornos convexos construidos alrededor de los puntos caracteristicos detectados en frames consecutivos. A continuacion, comparando la proporcion del area del obstaculo y la posicion del UAV, el metodo decide si el obstaculo detectado puede provocar una colision. Por ultimo, el algoritmo extrae las zonas libres de colision alrededor del obstaculo y combinandolo con los puntos de referencia, elUAV realiza la maniobra de evasion. (III) Guiado de navegacion, que genera los puntos de referencia para determinar la trayectoria de vuelo basada en el entorno y en los obstaculos detectados que encuentra. Proporciona una estrategia para seguir los segmentos del trazado de una manera eficiente y realizar la maniobra de vuelo con suavidad. (IV) Guiado por Vision, para ofrecer soluciones de control diferentes (Control de Logica Fuzzy (FLC) y PID), basados en la informacion visual obtenida con el fin de lograr la estabilidad de vuelo, asi como realizar la maniobra correcta para evitar posibles colisiones y seguir los puntos de referencia. Todos los algoritmos propuestos han sido verificados con vuelos reales en ambientes exteriores e interiores, tomando en consideracion condiciones visuales como la iluminacion y las texturas. Los resultados obtenidos han sido validados con otros sistemas: como el sistema de captura de movimiento VICON y DGPS en el caso del algoritmo de estimacion de la posicion y orientacion. Ademas, los algoritmos propuestos han sido comparados con trabajos anteriores recogidos en el estado del arte con resultados que demuestran una mejora de la precision y la robustez de los algoritmos propuestos.     Variable Resolution & Dimensional Mapping For 3d Model Optimization

    Three-dimensional computer models, especially geospatial architectural data sets, can be visualized in the same way humans experience the world, providing a realistic, interactive experience. Scene familiarization, architectural analysis, scientific visualization, and many other applications would benefit from finely detailed, high resolution, 3D models. Automated methods to construct these 3D models traditionally has produced data sets that are often low fidelity or inaccurate; otherwise, they are initially highly detailed, but are very labor and time intensive to construct. Such data sets are often not practical for common real-time usage and are not easily updated. This thesis proposes Variable Resolution & Dimensional Mapping (VRDM), a methodology that has been developed to address some of the limitations of existing approaches to model construction from images. Key components of VRDM are texture palettes, which enable variable and ultra-high resolution images to be easily composited; texture features, which allow image features to integrated as image or geometry, and have the ability to modify the geometric model structure to add detail. These components support a primary VRDM objective of facilitating model refinement with additional data. This can be done until the desired fidelity is achieved as practical limits of infinite detail are approached. Texture Levels, the third component, enable real-time interaction with a very detailed model, along with the flexibility of having alternate pixel data for a given area of the model and this is achieved through extra dimensions. Together these techniques have been used to construct models that can contain GBs of imagery data

    Multiple cue integration for robust tracking in dynamic environments: application to video relighting

    L'anàlisi de moviment i seguiment d'objectes ha estat un dels pricipals focus d'atenció en la comunitat de visió per computador durant les dues darreres dècades. L'interès per aquesta àrea de recerca resideix en el seu ample ventall d'aplicabilitat, que s'extén des de tasques de navegació de vehicles autònoms i robots, fins a aplications en la indústria de l'entreteniment i realitat virtual.Tot i que s'han aconseguit resultats espectaculars en problemes específics, el seguiment d'objectes continua essent un problema obert, ja que els mètodes disponibles són propensos a ser sensibles a diversos factors i condicions no estacionàries de l'entorn, com ara moviments impredictibles de l'objecte a seguir, canvis suaus o abruptes de la il·luminació, proximitat d'objectes similars o fons confusos. Enfront aquests factors de confusió la integració de múltiples característiques ha demostrat que permet millorar la robustesa dels algoritmes de seguiment. En els darrers anys, degut a la creixent capacitat de càlcul dels ordinadors, hi ha hagut un significatiu increment en el disseny de complexes sistemes de seguiment que consideren simultàniament múltiples característiques de l'objecte. No obstant, la majoria d'aquests algoritmes estan basats enheurístiques i regles ad-hoc formulades per aplications específiques, fent-ne impossible l'extrapolació a noves condicions de l'entorn.En aquesta tesi proposem un marc probabilístic general per integrar el nombre de característiques de l'objecte que siguin necessàries, permetent que interactuin mútuament per tal d'estimar-ne el seu estat amb precisió, i per tant, estimar amb precisió la posició de l'objecte que s'està seguint. Aquest marc, s'utilitza posteriorment per dissenyar un algoritme de seguiment, que es valida en diverses seqüències de vídeo que contenen canvis abruptes de posició i il·luminació, camuflament de l'objecte i deformacions no rígides. Entre les característiques que s'han utilitzat per representar l'objecte, cal destacar la paramatrització robusta del color en un espai de color dependent de l'objecte, que permet distingir-lo del fons més clarament que altres espais de color típicament ulitzats al llarg de la literatura.En la darrera part de la tesi dissenyem una tècnica per re-il·luminar tant escenes estàtiques com en moviment, de les que s'en desconeix la geometria. La re-il·luminació es realitza amb un mètode 'basat en imatges', on la generació de les images de l'escena sota noves condicions d'il·luminació s'aconsegueix a partir de combinacions lineals d'un conjunt d'imatges de referència pre-capturades, i que han estat generades il·luminant l'escena amb patrons de llum coneguts. Com que la posició i intensitat de les fonts d'il.luminació que formen aquests patrons de llum es pot controlar, és natural preguntar-nos: quina és la manera més òptima d'il·luminar una escena per tal de reduir el nombre d'imatges de referència? Demostrem que la millor manera d'il·luminar l'escena (és a dir, la que minimitza el nombre d'imatges de referència) no és utilitzant una seqüència de fonts d'il·luminació puntuals, com es fa generalment, sinó a través d'una seqüència de patrons de llum d'una base d'il·luminació depenent de l'objecte. És important destacar que quan es re-il·luminen seqüències de vídeo, les imatges successives s'han d'alinear respecte a un sistema de coordenades comú. Com que cada imatge ha estat generada per un patró de llum diferent il·uminant l'escena, es produiran canvis d'il·luminació bruscos entre imatges de referència consecutives. Sota aquestes circumstàncies, el mètode de seguiment proposat en aquesta tesi juga un paper fonamental. Finalment, presentem diversos resultats on re-il·luminem seqüències de vídeo reals d'objectes i cares d'actors en moviment. En cada cas, tot i que s'adquireix un únic vídeo, som capaços de re-il·luminar una i altra vegada, controlant la direcció de la llum, la seva intensitat, i el color.Motion analysis and object tracking has been one of the principal focus of attention over the past two decades within the computer vision community. The interest of this research area lies in its wide range of applicability, extending from autonomous vehicle and robot navigation tasks, to entertainment and virtual reality applications.Even though impressive results have been obtained in specific problems, object tracking is still an open problem, since available methods are prone to be sensitive to several artifacts and non-stationary environment conditions, such as unpredictable target movements, gradual or abrupt changes of illumination, proximity of similar objects or cluttered backgrounds. Multiple cue integration has been proved to enhance the robustness of the tracking algorithms in front of such disturbances. In recent years, due to the increasing power of the computers, there has been a significant interest in building complex tracking systems which simultaneously consider multiple cues. However, most of these algorithms are based on heuristics and ad-hoc rules formulated for specific applications, making impossible to extrapolate them to new environment conditions.In this dissertation we propose a general probabilistic framework to integrate as many object features as necessary, permitting them to mutually interact in order to obtain a precise estimation of its state, and thus, a precise estimate of the target position. This framework is utilized to design a tracking algorithm, which is validated on several video sequences involving abrupt position and illumination changes, target camouflaging and non-rigid deformations. Among the utilized features to represent the target, it is important to point out the use of a robust parameterization of the target color in an object dependent colorspace which allows to distinguish the object from the background more clearly than other colorspaces commonly used in the literature.In the last part of the dissertation, we design an approach for relighting static and moving scenes with unknown geometry. The relighting is performed through an -image-based' methodology, where the rendering under new lighting conditions is achieved by linear combinations of a set of pre-acquired reference images of the scene illuminated by known light patterns. Since the placement and brightness of the light sources composing such light patterns can be controlled, it is natural to ask: what is the optimal way to illuminate the scene to reduce the number of reference images that are needed? We show that the best way to light the scene (i.e., the way that minimizes the number of reference images) is not using a sequence of single, compact light sources as is most commonly done, but rather to use a sequence of lighting patterns as given by an object-dependent lighting basis. It is important to note that when relighting video sequences, consecutive images need to be aligned with respect to a common coordinate frame. However, since each frame is generated by a different light pattern illuminating the scene, abrupt illumination changes between consecutive reference images are produced. Under these circumstances, the tracking framework designed in this dissertation plays a central role. Finally, we present several relighting results on real video sequences of moving objects, moving faces, and scenes containing both. In each case, although a single video clip was captured, we are able to relight again and again, controlling the lighting direction, extent, and color.Postprint (published version
