Local debates on 'global' planning concepts: the 'compact European city' model in postsocialist Russia - the case of Perm'

Although urban planning and design presents a discipline that is strongly influenced by international and interurban exchange, urban landscapes are far from globally convergent but instead reveal local characteristics and new forms of disparity. In the fields of urban planning and design, the concept of the ‘compact European city’ replaced the paradigm of functionalist modernism. Although it has been contested too, the concept reached a hegemonic status in Central and Western Europe. The aim of this paper is to trace how the ‘compact European city’ model is travelling to Russia. Based on the case of Perm’ it will be demonstrated that the concept is presented as a counter-model to Soviet and post-Soviet urbanism. Furthermore, it is promoted as a product for a transformation of Russian conurbations into prospering, international, ‘European’ cities. Local actors, structures and urban legacies acted as an (allowing, transforming, hindering or resisting) infrastructure for the model, which in the case of Perm’ finally led to the failure of the strategy. The paper applies two bodies of literature, which involve research on the global transfer of urban concepts on the one hand and studies of postsocialist cities conceptualizing the role of (urban) legacies in the on-going transition on the other hand.

The EUTOS long-term survival (ELTS) score is superior to the Sokal score for predicting survival in chronic myeloid leukemia

Prognostic scores support clinicians in selecting risk-adjusted treatments and in comparatively assessing different results. For patients with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), four baseline prognostic scores are commonly used. Our aim was to compare the prognostic performance of the scores and to arrive at an evidence-based score recommendation. In 2949 patients not involved in any score development, higher hazard ratios and concordance indices in any comparison demonstrated the best discrimination of long-term survival with the ELTS score. In a second step, of 5154 patients analyzed to investigate risk group classification differences, 23% (n = 1197) were allocated to high-risk by the Sokal score. Of the 1197 Sokal high-risk patients, 56% were non-high-risk according to the ELTS score and had a significantly more favorable long-term survival prognosis than the 526 high-risk patients according to both scores. The Sokal score identified too many patients as high-risk and relatively few (40%) as low-risk (versus 60% with the ELTS score). Inappropriate risk classification jeopardizes optimal treatment selection. The ELTS score outperformed the Sokal score, the Euro, and the EUTOS score regarding risk group discrimination. The recent recommendation of the European LeukemiaNet for preferred use of the ELTS score was supported with significant statistical evidence.Peer reviewe

In the master thesis we discuss the analysis and evaluation of artworks in elementary school art class. In the theoretical part we first explored why pupils in elementary school should develop competences of analysis and evaluation of artworks. We then examined some researches that have been done in the field of evaluation of artworks in elementary school and found out that improvements are needed and that teachers mainly need the knowledge of different approaches for analysis and evaluation of artworks with pupils. Next we presented some good examples of practices that were developed in schools, on different projects and also in art galleries and museums. We explored in detail and presented the Ways in approach, which was developed and is used in educational programmes in Tate gallery in Great Britain. We described the approach and explained it`s use. We also described what museum educators in Tate gallery and teachers, who had gotten familiar with the approach, think about it. We found out that a teacher must know an artwork well, if he wishes to interpret it with the help of the Ways in approach. It is preferable if he analyses the artwork first and after that forms questions for an analysis and evaluation with the pupils. Therefore we also presented some methods and approaches for teaches to use for a formal and contextual analysis of artworks. As an example we analysed Paul Klee`s painting Before the snow, which we later also used in the pedagogical part of the thesis. On the basis of our theoretical findings we formed and carried out an educational unit in the duration of three school hours in the pedagogical research part of the thesis. In seventh grade art class we used the Ways in specific didactic approach in the field of painting for the presentation of Paul Klee`s artwork. In the educational unit we were establishing the effects of the use of the Ways in specific didactic approach on the responsiveness and motivation of pupils at evaluation of artworks and on the application of the attained knowledge in their own art making. In the research we wished to show the use of the Ways in approach and to test it`s performance possibilities in regular art class in elementary school

    Tone Kralj and Venice

Tone Kralj is regarded as one of the greatest Slovenian painters and versatile artists. Although his opus comprises many renowned and analyzed works, this diploma thesis deals with the yet unanalyzed and unevaluated work of art by Kralj, e.g. the painting created by the artist in Venice in 1940, which is part of the art collection of the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana. Upon establishing the painting's basic information and its provenience, a formal analysis is done by determining its theme, physicality, space, and composition. These findings are further upgraded with the iconographic analysis in which separate elements in the painting are explained individually and holistically. Lastly, the iconological analysis is used to place the painting in the historical and social contexts of its creation highlighting the circumstances that could possibly influence the painting. After interpreting the painting, emphasis is placed on the very meaning of interpretation and the importance of learning it. Within this framework, the Ways In method for a quality interpretation of art works is introduced. This method is later on employed to form questions that could be used for the interpretation of Kralj's painting

Autoritärer Urbanismus: zur Normativität eines Forschungsfeldes

    Get PDF
