Agency and Adaptation: Strategies of Immigrants’ Descendants on the Swedish Labor Market

    Get PDF
This article explores how descendants of immigrants in Sweden understand labor market conditions, and how such understandings influence their occupational strategies. We interviewed 21 Sweden-born individuals with non-Western immigrant parents, and identified three strategies based on our analysis of the data: ‘choosing’ the right job, adapting the habitus, and using cultural capital in flexible ways. The first strategy covers interviewees working in jobs with labor shortages and/or high demand for employees with immigrant background. The second covers interviewees who could learn through failing, with substantial resilience and persistence. The third deals with interviewees who searched for jobs in branches that valued their particular skill set, entailing the importance of being flexible on the labor marke

In recently initiated research project we analize the contents of educational programs for socialworkers in Sweden with regards to ethnical issues. This field of knowledge has varied over timeaccording to the dominant traditions in Social Work Education. The specific aim of our study is todescribe the different ways in which ethnic relations have been conceptualized in the contents of thedifferent parts of these Social Work curriculums. We argue that the issue of ethnic relations shouldplay a central role in the academic training of social workers in Sweden. We also want to participate inthe international dialogue initiated by this journal, a dialogue that have underlined to the need to adaptthe contents of Social Work to the demands of a global society.

Sibship and dispensing patterns of asthma medication in young children : a population based study

    Get PDF
Purpose: Our aim was to study the association between sibship and dispensing patterns of asthma medication in young children, focusing on incidence and persistence, and taking sibship status, asthma diagnoses, and siblings’ medication into account. Methods: A register-based cohort study including all children (n=50,546) born in Stockholm, Sweden 2006–2007, followed up during 2006–2014. Exposure was sibling status; outcome was incidence of dispensed asthma medication and persistence over time. A Cox-model was used to study the association between sibship and asthma medication. Persistence was defined using two different time windows (4- and 18-months) in a refill sequence model including siblings’ and unrelated control children’s medication. Results: After one year of age, the adjusted hazard ratio of dispensed asthma medication was 0.85 (95%CI 0.80–0.90) among children with siblings compared to singletons. The estimated proportion of children with persistent controller medication was 7.2% (4-month model) and 64.5% (18-month model). When including the siblings’ controller medication, the estimated proportion was 8.8% (4-months) and 7.8% for control children (relative risk, RR 0.89, 95%CI 0.81-0.98). The persistence was lower for those with siblings compared to singletons (adj. RR 0.72, 95%CI 0.62-0.85 for 4-months) with similar estimates for older, younger, and full siblings and regardless of asthma diagnoses. Conclusions: Siblings have different dispensing patterns of asthma medications compared to singletons regardless of asthma diagnoses. After including the siblings’ asthma medication and compared with control children, the proportion of children with persistent medication increased which may indicate that siblings share asthma medications.Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and WelfareStrategic Research Program in EpidemiologyStockholm County CouncilSwedish Heart Lung FoundationSwedish Research CouncilAccepte

Are you there? : Presence in collaborative distance work

doi linkki ei toimi 31.1.2022, ilmoitettu lehteen/USAlready before the pandemic, digitally mediated collaborative work and communication were perceived as challenging. We investigate the attitudes towards emerging technologies and for transforming practises in workplaces. The focus lies on understanding the readiness for appropriating emotional tracking on presence and support for collaboration. The research-based design framework allowed to combine the various perspectives of the transdisciplinary team. Methods included participatory design, design thinking, contextual inquiry and prototype testing for enhancing presence while working with shared objects in video conferencing to explore the appropriation of tools. The findings revealed four indications: 1) awareness of interlocutors’ presence during synchronous communication is crucial. 2) Emotion and behaviour tracking raises concerns about privacy and personal control over what is displayed to others, and technology could be simpler non-distracting the work at hand. 3) The prototype was found to enhance the feeling of presence without disturbing work at hand, and 4) appropriation requires a step-by-step approach.Peer reviewe

The multi-faceted Swedish Heureka forest decision support system: context, functionality, design, and 10 years experiences of its use

    Get PDF
For several decades, computerized forest decision support systems (DSS) have helped managers and decision makers to analyze different management options and supported the search for preferred management alternatives. In Sweden, a country rich in forests and with a long tradition in intensive forest management, such systems have been developed and available since the 1970s. Changes in societal as well as in forest owners' preferences and objectives in the 1990s led to a need for forest DSS handling broader perspectives compared to precedent single-objective timber-oriented systems. In Sweden, this led to the initiation of a research programme in the beginning of the 2000s aiming at developing a versatile and multi-objective forest DSS, resulting in the first version of the Heureka forest DSS released in 2009. The system handles several forest values, such as timber and biofuel production, carbon sequestration, dead wood dynamics, habitat for species, recreation and susceptibility to forest damages (spruce bark beetle, wind-throw and root rot). It contains a suite of software for different problem settings and geographical scales and uses simulation as well as optimization techniques. Three software handle projections of the forest using a common core of growth and yield models for simulating forest dynamics. A fourth software, built for multi-criteria decision analysis and including a web-version, enables also group decision making and participatory planning. For more than 10 years, the Heureka system has been used in teaching, environmental analysis, research and as decision support in practical forestry. For example, several research groups using the system for analyses in different problem areas have so far published more than 80 scientific papers. The system is used for nation-wide forest impact analysis for policy support and all large and many medium-sized forest owners use it for their long-term forest planning, meaning that it directly influences forest management decisions and activities on more than 50% of the Swedish forest area. Besides presenting the present system and its use, we also discuss lessons learned and potential future development

Longitudinal Associations between Food Parenting Practices and Dietary Intake in Children: The Feel4Diabetes Study

    Get PDF
Food parenting practices (FPPs) have an important role in shaping children’s dietary behaviors. This study aimed to investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations over a twoyear follow-up between FPP and dietary intake and compliance with current recommendations in 6- to 11-year-old European children. A total of 2967 parent-child dyads from the Feel4Diabetes study, a randomized controlled trial of a school and community-based intervention, (50.4% girls and 93.5% mothers) were included. FPPs assessed were: (1) home food availability; (2) parental role modeling of fruit intake; (3) permissiveness; (4) using food as a reward. Children’s dietary intake was assessed through a parent-reported food frequency questionnaire. In regression analyses, the strongest cross-sectional associations were observed between home availability of 100% fruit juice and corresponding intake (β = 0.492 in girls and β = 0.506 in boys, p < 0.001), and between parental role modeling of fruit intake and children’s fruit intake (β = 0.431 in girls and β = 0.448 in boys, p < 0.001). In multilevel logistic regression models, results indicated that improvements in positive FPPs over time were mainly associated with higher odds of compliance with healthy food recommendations, whereas a decrease in negative FPP over time was associated with higher odds of complying with energy-dense/nutrient-poor food recommendations. Improving FPPs could be an effective way to improve children’s dietary intake.European Union’s Horizon 2020Aragón’s Regional Government (Diputación General de Aragón, DGA
