A Social Autopsy of the Kiss Nightclub Fire

    Get PDF
This article offers a social autopsy of the Kiss Nightclub Fire and an exploration of the networks of trauma and reconstruction in its wake. We present a critical analysis of the social and political conditions that created this large-scale tragedy, placing these in the context of political conflict and profit-seeking in Brazil’s recent past. We trace the trauma of the fire in a network of survivors and family members in Rio Grande do Sul and beyond, and the contrasting ways they have sought to make sense of and respond to the fire with political action and/or spiritual exploration

Resistance, necropolitics, and revenge fantasies: Bacurau (2019) by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles

Bacurau by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles was the most controversial Brazilian film of 2019. It debuted at the Cannes Festival 2019 where it won the Special Jury Prize and later won more national and international distinctions. It was praised and criticized as a film that promotes resistance against the Bolsonaro government, and its sexist, racist and homophobic discourse. This article seeks to analyze three central aspects of the film: 1) how this resistance occurs against the American invaders who use the village of Bacurau for a real-life video game with its population as living targets; 2) the use of necropolitics, which historically resulted from the trafficking of people and slavery, and which is behind the sale of the village by its mayor Tony Júnior; and 3), the fantasy of revenge for this oppression. The main objective of this article consists in analyzing these aspects to understand whether the film contributes to the debate on racism in Brazil or not. We ask if it promotes a debate about the necessary decolonization to face the fundamental problem of inequality given the still-existing colonial power, or if it is just a vehicle for the political frustrations, offering viewers a momentary cathartic experience.

The article provides a critical commentary on the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM-V, from 2013. It traces the historical reasons behind the fact that sexual preferences are included as mental disorders in the psychiatric manual, even if many of them are empirically neither generally associated with impairment or harmful to anyone else. This holds true for fetishism, masochism and consensual sadism among others, and the article pays special attention “sadism” and “masochism, which as “clinical” terms are constituted from the names of literary authors. Second it close reads the descriptions in DSM-V to show that there are several reasons why these descriptions become pathologizing and stigmatizing despite explicit intentions to be the opposite. These include erosions of the distinction between paraphilia and paraphilic disorder – a distinction on which the very possibility of diagnosis is established. Furthermore, the handbook does not make the non-consensual, the impairing or the harmful, the over-riding principle but instead the sexual preference in and of itself. The article shows how deeply affected the conceptions of the real-world preferences are by the events and characters in the fiction of these authors, and how hierarchical disparity and power exchange are typically more central to the preferences than pain with which they have been so closely linked

Nøgleord: Situeret etik, Etiske dilemmaer, Etiske fordringer, Praksisforskning, MedforskerResearch organized in close collaboration with participants and conducted in the contexts of everyday life poses several ethical dilemmas for the researcher throughout the research process. Considerations related to, for example, informed consent, data storage and processing, and anonymization issues are important as-pects of research ethics, but address only some of the ethical questions that may arise in research. Moreover, these are more procedural aspects of ethics, which often dominate in the early stages of a research project and, in many cases, are not sufficient as guidelines when researchers need to make concrete assessments and decisions about ethical challenges at various points in the research process. Ethical dilemmas arise precisely from situations where the researcher is in doubt, becomes uncertain about what the right decision is, and/or experiences conflicting emotions or inclinations to act. Ethical questions also arise throughout the research process; from formulating the research question, initiating empirical work, leaving the field, and conducting analyses to publishing them. In the article, we discuss formulating ethical commitments that can guide such reflection and decision-making processes throughout the research process. Ethical commitments are overarching ethical ob-ligations that one undertakes to work with in one's research, and at the same time anchored in the specific research project's methodology, theoretical framework, as well as the field and issues one is working on. In the article, we discuss how ethical commitments can contribute to reflecting on how ethical dilemmas can be handled throughout the research process. We draw on examples from two research projects on the everyday lives of children and parents, which in various ways have involved ethical dilemmas in research collaboration. Nudes, gender negotiations and community : A qualitative study of young people’s sexualized digital practices involving imagery of peers

    No full text
Nøgleord: Sexting, digitale sexkrænkelser, unge, køn, sociale medier, nymaterialisme The article is based on the PhD dissertation, ”Traveling Imagery – a qualitative study of young people’s use and sharing of sexualized digital imagery of peers”, de-fended at the Danish School of Education, Aarhus University, in January 2022. The aim was ‘to explore how differentiated sexualized digital practices involving image-ry of peers are enacted and to analyze how they make sense to young people aged 15–20’. More specifically, the dissertation examined how the imagery is produced, used, spread, and contested, what kinds of social and gendered norms and position-ings are being produced and negotiated, and how these practices are facilitated and invited by the technology.Drawing on posthumanism and new materialism, combined with concepts from phi-losophy, poststructuralism, postphenomenology, and affect theory, and through re-search material produced via digital ethnography, analogue fieldwork and cases from a helpline, the dissertation addresses the social and technological dynamics contributing to produce young people’s sexualized digital practices involving image-ry.The analyses show how young people’s sexualized digital imagery travels in volatile and boundless social networks across both analogue and digital contexts. This seems to blur the distinction between young people’s everyday sexualized digital practices involving imagery and their more abusive and criminal practices. For some young people (mainly boys), the sexualized imagery is used to pursue sexual desires and obtain sexual excitement, yet for most, it functions as a valuable currency for obtain-ing status and recognition through social and gendered negotiations among friends and acquaintances in, and across, analogue and digital spaces. Communicating the experience of living with chronic pain: The role of non-verbal communication and the power of lessons learned

    Get PDF
Background: Chronic pain is hard to communicate due to its invisible, inaudible, and imprecise nature. Outside of pain scales that try to quantify pain, individuals with chronic pain have a hard time expressing it, yet pain management relies on effective communication. This study explores how women with chronic pain enrolled in an online therapeutic writing workshop communicate the experience of living with chronic pain to fellow sufferers. Methods: A six-week online therapeutic writing workshop was conducted with individuals with chronic pain who responded to weekly creative writing prompts that focused on mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy strategies including attention, emotional regulation, and examining thoughts and attitudes. Participants were recruited by their primary care provider; seven participants enrolled. All posts were aggregated and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Data analysis from participants’ posts reveal two interpretive repertoires including physical evidence of pain where participants expressed visible impacts of pain occurring in their home environments and communicated non-verbally in gestures and behaviors. Secondly, the theme of lessons learned from living with pain emerged including enhanced empathy, the need for self-care, and sharing coping skills. Conclusion: This study extends our understanding of the experience of living with chronic pain outside of a medical context by providing new insights gained from their creative writing responses. The online therapeutic writing workshop fostered a community of support where participants were empowered to express their pain, identify their pain behaviors, and invite cognitive restructuring to learn from their pain

Enacting communication cycles after prediabetes: Mothers’ stories of diabetes risk and seeking support

    Get PDF
Background: Diabetes is a family systems experience of multiple intergenerational relationships. Communicating about diabetes as a familial risk helps individuals perceive greater control over preventing diabetes. Aim: The present study investigates how mothers disclose their prediabetes to their family and the precipitating family communication, with the goal to interrupt the multigenerational legacy of diabetes. Method: Data were collected from a Family Medicine outpatient clinic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to illicit information about mother-child communication about diabetes. Sort and Sift, Think and Shift analysis provided rich descriptions of mothers’ experiences. Results: The sample consisted of 9 women with prediabetes, aged 42-70, who had at least one child. Eight participants described at least 2 generations of family members with a diabetes-related diagnosis (prediabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and gestational diabetes). First, we present two contextual factors that preexisted the prediabetes diagnosis, which influenced the disclosure decision: general health communication approach and personal evaluation of diabetes. Second, we present the communication cycles that supported self-management. Discussion: Continual communication cycles with family and clinicians can support mothers with prediabetes to enact self-management behaviors and delay the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Mothers need family members to respond favorably to complete a positive communication cycle that can generate continuous emotional, social, and instrumental support

Planetariske infrastrukturer: Telegrafisk tid i Jules Vernes Jorden rundt på 80 dage (1873)

    No full text

English abstractThe Unique EnergyAt the end of March 2024, Thomas Bloch Ravn will step down as director after 28 years at the helm of Den Gamle By. For nearly threedecades, Den Gamle By has undergone an extensive reinvention, and in the article, Thomas Bloch Ravn shares how he has drawninspiration from founder Peter Holm’s initial plans for his museum. Thomas Bloch Ravn’s connection to this, the essence of Den GamleBy, was forged through conversations with former museum curator Erna Lorenzen, who worked with Peter Holm from 1935 to 1945. The director advises his successor to embrace the unique energy residing deep within Den Gamle By’s core concept
