    An Experimental study of the initial volumetric strain rate effect on the creep behaviour of reconstituted clays

    Clayey soils tend to undergo continuous compression with time, even after excess pore pressures have substantially dissipated. The effect of time on deformation and mechanical response of these soft soils has been the subject of numerous studies. Based on these studies, the observed time-dependent behaviour of clays is mainly related to the evolution of soil volume and strength characteristics with time, which are classified as creep and/or relaxation properties of the soil. Apart from many empirical relationships that have been proposed in the literature to capture the rheological behaviour of clays, a number of viscid constitutive relationships have also been developed which have more attractive theoretical attributes. A particular feature of these viscid models is that their creep parameters often have clear physical meaning (e.g. coefficient of secondary compression, Cα). Sometimes with these models, a parameter referred to as initial/reference volumetric strain rate, has also been alluded as a model parameter. However, unlike Cα, the determination of and its variations with stress level is not properly documented in the literature. In an attempt to better understand , this paper presents an experimental investigation of the reference volumetric strain rate in reconstituted clay specimens. A long-term triaxial creep test, at different shear stress levels and different strain rates, was performed on clay specimen whereby the volumetric strain rate was measured.     A comparative study of different model families for the constitutive simulation of viscous clays

    The simulation of the viscous behavior of some clays is of high importance in many geotechnical problems. The literature offers a vast amount of constitutive models able to simulate the rate dependence observed on these materials. Although most of thesemodels are calibrated to very similar experimental observations and share similar definitions ofmaterial parameters, some discrepancies of their response have been detected, which are related to their mathematical formulations. In this work, the causes of these discrepancies are carefully studied. To that end, four different model families are analyzed, namely, nonstationary flow surface (NSFS) models, viscoplasticity with overstress function (OVP), viscoplasticity with Norton\u27s power law (NVP), and visco-hypoplasticity (VHP). For the sake of a fair comparison, single constitutive models using the same set of material parameters, and following other requirements, are developed for each model family. Numerical implementations of the four resulting models are performed. Their response at different tests are carefully analyzed through simulation examples and direct examination of their constitutive equations. The set includes some basic tests at isotropic stress states and others as responses envelopes, undrained creep rupture, and an oedometer test with loading, unloading-reloading, creep, and relaxation. The article is concluded with some remarks about the observed discrepancies of these model families

    Three-Photon Absorption Spectra and Bandgap Scaling In Direct-Gap Semiconductors

    This paper presents three-photon absorption (3PA) measurement results for nine direct-gap semiconductors, including full 3PA spectra for ZnSe, ZnS, and GaAs. These results, along with our theory of 3PA using an eight-band Kane model (four bands with double spin degeneracy), help to explain the significant disagreements between experiments and theory in the literature to date. 3PA in the eight-band model exhibits quantum interference between the various possible pathways that is not observed in previous two-band theories. We present measurements of degenerate 3PA coefficients in InSb, GaAs, CdTe, CdSe, ZnTe, CdS, ZnSe, ZnO, and ZnS. We examine bandgap, Eg, scaling using -band tunneling and perturbation theories that show agreement with the predicted Eg−7 dependence; however, for those semiconductors for which we measured full 3PA spectra, we observe significant discrepancies with both two-band theories. On the other hand, our eight-band model shows excellent agreement with the spectral data. We then use our eight-band theory to predict the 3PA spectra for 15 different semiconductors in their zinc-blende form. These results allow prediction and interpretation of the 3PA coefficients for various narrow to wide bandgap semiconductors

    Spectral and temperature dependence of two-photon and free-carrier absorption in InSb

    The nonlinear absorption spectrum of InSb was measured using a combination of tunable similar to 160 fs, similar to 10 ps, and similar to 150 ns IR sources along with a cryostat for controlling the sample temperature to vary the band gap energy from 0.17 to 0.23 eV. The measured nonlinear optical properties in InSb are consistent with those predicted by the models which include two-and three-photon absorption (2PA and 3PA), multiphoton generated free-carrier absorption (FCA) and various recombination mechanisms. Temperature-dependent Z-scan and nonlinear transmission measurements yield information on the temperature and spectral dependence of 2PA, FCA, and carrier recombination processes of Shockley-Read-Hall, and Auger mechanisms. We find good agreement between the measured and the modeled nonlinear properties is possible only when the recently predicted temperature dependence of the FCA is considered. The wavelength-and temperature-dependent 2PA and 3PA coefficients in InSb were experimentally obtained. The inferred values of the 2PA and 3PA are consistent with the scaling rules of a simple two-parabolic band model.     Renal Sodium Gradient Orchestrates a Dynamic Antibacterial Defense Zone.

    Lower urinary tract infections are among the most common human bacterial infections, but extension to the kidneys is rare. This has been attributed to mechanical forces, such as urine flow, that prevent the ascent of bladder microbes. Here, we show that the regional hypersalinity, required for the kidney's urine-concentrating function, instructs epithelial cells to produce chemokines that localize monocyte-derived mononuclear phagocytes (MNPs) to the medulla. This hypersaline environment also increases the intrinsic bactericidal and neutrophil chemotactic activities of MNPs to generate a zone of defense. Because MNP positioning and function are dynamically regulated by the renal salt gradient, we find that patients with urinary concentrating defects are susceptible to kidney infection. Our work reveals a critical accessory role for the homeostatic function of a vital organ in optimizing tissue defense

    This chapter provides on overall picture of business intelligence (BI) and supply chain analytics (SCA) as a means to support supply chain management (SCM) and decision-making. Based on the literature review, we clarify the needs of BI and performance measurement in the SCM sphere, and discuss its potential to enhance decision-making in strategic, tactical and operational levels. We also make a closer look in to SCA in different areas and functions of SCM. Our findings indicate that the main challenge for harnessing the full potential of SCA is the lack of holistic and integrated BI approaches that originates from the fact that each functional area is using its own IT applications without necessary integration in to the company’s overall BI system. Following this examination, we construct a holistic framework that illustrates how an integrated, managerially planned BI system can be developed. Finally, we discuss the main competency requirements, as well as the challenges still prohibiting the great majority of firms from building smart and comprehensive BI systems for SCM.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed
