    Analytical approach to ground heat losses for high temperature thermal storage systems

    A new approach to estimate the heat loss from thermal energy storage tank foundations is presented. Results are presented through analytical correlations based on numerical solutions for the steady-state heat conduction problem for thermal energy slab-on-grade tanks with uniform insulation. Model results were verified with other well-established benchmark problems with similar boundary conditions and validated with experimental data with excellent agreement. In addition to the TES foundation heat loss, new correlations for the maximum temperature and for the radial evolution of the temperature underneath the insulation layer are also provided, giving important information related to the tank foundation design. The correlated variables are of primordial importance in the tank foundation design because, due to the typical high operating storage temperatures, an inappropriate tank foundation insulation would lead not only to a not desired loss of energy but also to an inadmissible increase of the temperatures underneath the insulation layer, affecting the structural stability of the tank. The proposed correlations provide a quick method for the estimation of total tank foundation heat losses and soil maximum temperature reached underneath the insulation layer, saving time, and cost on the engineering tank foundation design process. Finally, a comprehensive parametric analysis of the variables of interest is made and a set of cases covering a wide range of tank sizes, insulation levels, depths to water table, and storage temperatures are solved

    En este artículo se exponen y analizan algunas características del temperamento, y su rol en la regulación de la personalidad. Para profundizar en la comprensión de éste, se alude a diversos investigadores de la temática en cuestión, en tal sentido encontramos un panorama no muy alentador que en primera instancia nos plantea una problemática propia de la Ciencias Psicológicas en toda su magnitud, las mismas que es consecuencia de que hayan surgido diferentes escuelas, corrientes y paradigmas, conllevando a su vez, de manera implícita, a implicaciones y sesgos de carácter ontológico, epistemológico y metodológico; se trata de la inflación que ha sufrido el término “temperamento”. Aunque ya existen algunos estudios pioneros en el abordaje del temperamento, aún no hay nada concluyente, sin embargo, el desarrollo vertiginoso de las ciencias genéticas y neurofisiológicas se muestran muy prometedoras en el estudio del temperamento. No obstante, resulta importante el estudio del temperamento imbricado en la personalidad como forma superior de estructuración y regulación de la psiquis, desde un enfoque biopsicosocial.     Ante la problemática social que se plantea en torno al envejecimiento, la presente investigación se propuso diseñar la propuesta de un programa educativo de preparación para la jubilación dirigido a jubilados (as) del municipio Santa Isabel de las Lajas, Cienfuegos, Cuba. Constó de dos etapas, una diagnóstica (enero del 2007 a junio del 2008) y otra de diseño (de junio de 2008 a enero del 2009); la primera tuvo diseño de investigación explicativo, transversal, retrospectivo, cuasiexperimental, participaron como muestra 164 jubilados y tres grupos nominales de actores sociales; se emplearon: encuestas, cuestionario, entrevistas, grupo nominal, diagrama Ishikawa, método de Ranqueo, la matriz DAFO; en la segunda se realizó un diseño de intervención, prospectivo. La metodología que se siguió fue la planificación estratégica, su validación fue por criterios de especialistas. Se identificaron los factores socioculturales, familiares e individuales influyentes en la adaptación a la jubilación y su repercusión psicológica, se constató que no existe en el municipio un programa de preparación para la jubilación, más de la mitad de los jubilados no están adaptados a la jubilación. Se diseñó un programa educativo de preparación para la jubilación, el cual cumple con los requisitos establecidos para su diseño y aplicabilidad. (DUAZARY 2010, 49 - 59

    A comprehensive asteroseismic modelling of the high-amplitude delta Scuti star RV Arietis

    We present a comprehensive asteroseismic study of the double-mode high-amplitude delta Scuti star HD 187642 (RV Arietis). The modelling includes some of the most recent techniques: 1) effects of rotation on both equilibrium models and adiabatic oscillation spectrum, 2) non-adiabatic study of radial and non-radial modes, 3) relationship between the fundamental radial mode and the first overtone in the framework of Petersen diagrams. The analysis reveals that two of the observed frequencies are very probably identified as the fundamental and first overtone radial modes. Analysis of the colour index variations, together with theoretical non-adiabatic calculations, points to models in the range of [7065,7245] K in effective temperature and of [1190, 1270] Myr in stellar age. These values were found to be compatible with those obtained using the three other asteroseismic techniques.Comment: accepted for publication in A&

    Make robots Be Bats: Specializing robotic swarms to the Bat algorithm

    Bat algorithm is a powerful nature-inspired swarm intelligence method proposed by Prof. Xin-She Yang in 2010, with remarkable applications in industrial and scientific domains. However, to the best of authors' knowledge, this algorithm has never been applied so far in the context of swarm robotics. With the aim to fill this gap, this paper introduces the first practical implementation of the bat algorithm in swarm robotics. Our implementation is performed at two levels: a physical level, where we design and build a real robotic prototype; and a computational level, where we develop a robotic simulation framework. A very important feature of our implementation is its high specialization: all (physical and logical) components are fully optimized to replicate the most relevant features of the real microbats and the bat algorithm as faithfully as possible. Our implementation has been tested by its application to the problem of finding a target location within unknown static indoor 3D environments. Our experimental results show that the behavioral patterns observed in the real and the simulated robotic swarms are very similar.     Exercise Interventions for Improving Flexibility in People with Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    [ES] Background and objectives: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) often experience limitations in joint range of motion, which is linked to spasticity and continued inactivity. Low flexibility levels in this population have been linked to postural problems and muscular pain. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and a meta-analysis aimed at identifying the characteristics and methodological quality of investigations studying the effects of exercise interventions on the flexibility levels of people with MS. Materials and Methods: Three electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, SPORTDiscus and Scopus) were systematically searched up to May 2019 for intervention studies focused on the effects of exercise on the flexibility levels of people with MS. A meta-analysis, including randomized controlled trials (RCT), which reported information regarding the effects of exercise on flexibility, was also conducted. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, and the Quality Assessment Tool for Before–After Studies, with no control group. The quality of the information reported, regarding the programs conducted, was assessed by means of the Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template (CERT) scale. Results: Seven studies, four RCTs and three uncontrolled investigations were finally selected. The methodological quality of the RCTs was considered “poor” in one study, and “good” and “excellent” in two studies and one investigation, respectively. The three uncontrolled studies showed a methodological quality between “fair” and “poor”. Following the CERT scale, four studies were graded as “high” and three as “low”. Findings from the meta-analysis indicated no significant effects on hamstring flexibility, or the range of motion in the hips, knees or ankles. Conclusions: There is preliminary evidence from individual studies which indicates that people with MS can improve their lower limb flexibility following participation in physical exercise programs, but the meta-analysis did not confirm these findings
