An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of two lyophilised aqueous extracts of Lysiloma acapulcensis (LAE) and Phitecellobium dulce (PDE) tree leaves on in vitro assessment of hatching of eggs, larval development and migration of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep using a general linear model. Treatments contained extracts from both species at concentrations of 0, 125, 250 and 500 μg/mL. Both albendazole and levamisole were used at a level of 1% as positive control. The extract of LAE, compared to PDE, showed better inhibition (P<0.05) of egg hatching. Different doses of both the LAE and PDE extracts showed a larvicidal effect (P<0.05) on all larvae exposed to different doses of the extracts. In the larval migration assay, a similar effect with levamisole at doses of 250 and 500 μg/mL occurred with the LAE extract. The extract of P. dulce had a lower larvicidal effect (P<0.05) than levamisole and L. acapulcensis extracts. Using aqueous extracts of both species of L. acapulcensis and P. dulce could be a promising alternative to synthetic anthelmintics as treatments of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in organic and conventional production systems under subtropical conditions.UAE

Lead thrombosis is a recognized complication of permanent transvenous pacemaker (PM) implantation. We present the interesting case of an adolescent with a dual-chamber PM presenting with fatigue and hypoxemia. Due to limitations of various imaging modalities, the diagnosis was difficult. She was eventually diagnosed with intracardiac PM lead thrombi obstructing tricuspid valve inflow. The pediatric literature on PM lead thrombosis is also briefly reviewed.peer-reviewe

Tourism promotion and urban space in Barcelona. Historic perspective and critical review, 1900-1936

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the historic connections between tourist promotion as a factor for both capital attraction and competitiveness and its influence on the urban configuration of Barcelona. Today, tourism represents a strategic value in the urban organisation of Barcelona and constitutes an excuse for the design, management and planning of the city, but the genealogy of this process has not been considered. In analysing this origin, the paper emphasises the validity of the strategies that were used at the beginning of the 20th century and makes a parallelism with the current promotion of the city. The tourist construction of Barcelona originated in the framework of the bourgeois ideology, which placed aesthetic and cultural values as a core idea of its discourse. Both the urban reconfiguration and the monumental construction of Barcelona were a prerequisite and a consequence of this promotion

    Get PDF
Objective: The article ́s objective is to analize the evolution of the young work force job composition under different macroeconomic regimes in Argentina: neoliberalism (1992-1998) and neodevelopmentalism (2004- 2014), taking into account the period of socioeconomic crisis (2001-2003) that separates them. Method: With this porpose a quantitative methodological strategy was developed processing data of the permanent household survey of the INDEC in the Great Buenos Aires agglomerate about the young workers between 18 and 29 years old. Results and conclusions: The study below presents a first approach about the problematic of the young argentinian people job placement, analyzing the sectorial behavior of jobs, the labor market segmentation and the work salary determination during the last two decades. The conclusion of the article is that in labor matters, the young people are in a disadvantaged position, accessing to lower quality jobs, with greater difficulties to keep them, despite the macroeconomic progressive changes that took place during the last years.Fil: Rubio, María Berenice. Chronological classification of ancient mortars employing spectroscopy and spectrometry techniques : Sagunto (Valencia, Spain) case

    Get PDF
Forty-two mortar samples, from two archaeological excavations located in Sagunto (Valencian Community, Spain), were analysed by both portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (pED-XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine major and minor elements, and traces including rare earth elements (REE). Collected data were crossed with those previously obtained from Sagunto Castle mortars and principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to discriminate the construction phases of the unearthed buildings. REE permitted to ascribe most of the masonries to the Roman Imperial period. Moreover, a statistical model was built by employing partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) in order to classify the mortars from Roman Imperial period and from Islamic period, due to the problematic overlapping between these two phases. Results confirmed the effectiveness of the developed indirect chronology method, based on REE data, to discriminate among historic mortars from different construction periods on a wide scale including different Sagunto archaeological sites

Geometric frustration in ordered lattices of plasmonic nanoelements

Inspired by geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, we present the optical response of three cases of hexagonal lattices of plasmonic nanoelements. All of them were designed using a metal-insulator-metal configuration to enhance absorption of light, with elements in close proximity to exploit near-field coupling, and with triangular symmetry to induce frustration of the dipolar polarization in the gaps between neighboring structures. Both simulations and experimental results demonstrate that these systems behave as perfect absorbers in the visible and/or the near infrared. Besides, the numerical study of the time evolution shows that they exhibit a relatively extended time response over which the system fluctuates between localized and collective modes. It is of particular interest the echoed excitation of surface lattice resonance modes, which are still present at long times because of the geometric frustration inherent to the triangular lattice. It is worth noting that the excitation of collective modes is also enhanced in other types of arrays where dipolar excitations of the nanoelements are hampered by the symmetry of the array. However, we would like to emphasize that the enhancement in triangular arrays can be significantly larger because of the inherent geometric incompatibility of dipolar excitations and three-fold symmetry axes

Chemical characterisation of historic mortars to evaluate decay and construction phases

    Get PDF
The chemical characterization of ancient mortars allowed the researchers to answer relevant questions about production technologies, raw materials supply, construction phases and state of decay. In this work one hundred and sixteen samples were collected from different structures during two archaeological excavations carried out in Sagunto’s city centre (Valencia, Spain). The studied area has been interested by several continuous phases of occupation since the Iberian Epoch (5th century BC) to the present times [1,2]. The samples were analysed employing X-ray fluorescence and Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine major and trace elements. The obtained data was statistically processed with Sagunto’s Castle mortar results [3], allowing us to identify the construction phases of most of the wall structures, confirming the particular effectiveness of Rare Earth Elements analysis to distinguish mortars from different periods. In conclusion, according to this data, the state of conservation of the different mortars has been evaluated. [1] Ripollés, Opulentissima Saguntum (2004) 165. [2] Monserrat, Arse 41 (2007) 231. Get PDF
We describe a case of locally acquired Plasmodium ovale malaria in Spain. The patient was a Spanish woman who had never traveled out of Spain and had no other risk factors for malaria. Because patients with malaria may never have visited endemic areas, occasional transmission of malaria to European hosts is a diagnostic and clinical challenge

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to determine the mineral levels in blood serum of nonlactating adult goats in the south of the State of México during the dry and rainy seasons. Eighty four multiparous (>2 calving and non-lactating) does were sampled (LW 39 ± 8 kg). Blood samples were collected by jugular vein punction, followed by separation of blood serum by adding 10% trichloroacetic acid for later laboratory analysis. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized factorial experiment. There was as effect (P<0.05) of season on serum concentrations of P, and there was an interaction (P<0.01) of season*region for Ca, Na, Cu and Zn. Mg was unaffected by treatments. Results suggest possible deficiencies in the diets of P, Ca, Cu and Zn
