IS 200: an old and still bacterial transposon
IS 200 is a mobile element found in a variety of eubacterial genera, such as Salmonella, Escherichia, Shigella, Vibrio, Enterococcus, Clostridium, Helicobacter, and Actinobacillus. In addition, IS200-like elements are found in archaea. IS 200 elements are very small (707–711 bp) and contain a single gene. Cladograms constructed with IS200 DNA sequences suggest that IS 200 has not spread among eubacteria by horizontal transfer; thus it may be an ancestral component of the bacterial genome. Self-restraint may have favored this evolutionary endurance; in fact, unlike typical mobile elements, IS 200 transposes rarely. Tight repression of transposase synthesis is achieved by a combination of mechanisms: inefficient transcription, protection from impinging transcription by a transcriptional terminator, and repression of translation by a stem-loop mRNA structure. Factors Influencing Farm Crime in Kenya: Opinions and Experiences of Farmers
Although agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy, the industry is faced with rapid
social, cultural, economic, and technological changes that have significantly increased crime
levels in rural areas. In particular, communal, social, and individual controls are diminishing,
and the result is an increase of criminal activities against agricultural operations. The aim of
the study was to assess factors associated with levels of agricultural theft and vandalism in
Kenya, based on the perceptions of farmers themselves. The research was carried out in the
Soy division of Uasin Gishu County. A multistage sampling approach, which incorporates
purposive, random, and systematic techniques, was used to select respondents within the case
study locations. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to a representative sample
of 200 farmers. Key informant interviews and informal discussions were conducted with
local administration officers, namely, village elders, sub chiefs and chiefs, to supplement
information derived from the survey. The study used routine activity theory to explain how
perceived changes in communities where the farmers lived have created opportunities for the
commission of crime. Based on the findings, the study recommends programs which create
employment opportunities for both youth and disadvantaged persons in rural Kenya
Hyperbolicity Measures "Democracy" in Real-World Networks
We analyze the hyperbolicity of real-world networks, a geometric quantity
that measures if a space is negatively curved. In our interpretation, a network
with small hyperbolicity is "aristocratic", because it contains a small set of
vertices involved in many shortest paths, so that few elements "connect" the
systems, while a network with large hyperbolicity has a more "democratic"
structure with a larger number of crucial elements.
We prove mathematically the soundness of this interpretation, and we derive
its consequences by analyzing a large dataset of real-world networks. We
confirm and improve previous results on hyperbolicity, and we analyze them in
the light of our interpretation.
Moreover, we study (for the first time in our knowledge) the hyperbolicity of
the neighborhood of a given vertex. This allows to define an "influence area"
for the vertices in the graph. We show that the influence area of the highest
degree vertex is small in what we define "local" networks, like most social or
peer-to-peer networks. On the other hand, if the network is built in order to
reach a "global" goal, as in metabolic networks or autonomous system networks,
the influence area is much larger, and it can contain up to half the vertices
in the graph. In conclusion, our newly introduced approach allows to
distinguish the topology and the structure of various complex networks
Corrections to scaling in the forest-fire model
We present a systematic study of corrections to scaling in the self-organized
critical forest-fire model. The analysis of the steady-state condition for the
density of trees allows us to pinpoint the presence of these corrections, which
take the form of subdominant exponents modifying the standard finite-size
scaling form. Applying an extended version of the moment analysis technique, we
find the scaling region of the model and compute the first non-trivial

Variation of Vitamin D in cow’s milk and interaction with β-lactoglobulin
Vitamin D is the collective name for a group of closely related lipids, whose main biological function is to maintain serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations within the normal range by enhancing the efficiency of the small intestine to absorb these minerals from the diet. We used a commercially available ELISA method for the determination of vitamin D in bovine milk. Individual milk samples from two different Italian Friesian herds were analysed. The enzyme immunoassay method used was confirmed as a useful tool to measure the vitamin D in the milk as it greatly reduces the time required to perform the conventional HPLC analysis. An interesting variation was found among individual animals that may be associated with management factors and specific genetic effects. A relationship was highlighted between vitamin D and the genetic polymorphism of β-lactoglobulin, the main bovine whey protein which is involved in the transport of small hydrophobic molecules such as retinol and vitamin D. The relatively high content of vitamin D in most milk samples suggests an opportunity to improve the natural content of vitamin D in milk either by acting on the herd management or selecting individuals genetically predisposed to produce milk with a higher vitamin D content
Universality in sandpiles
We perform extensive numerical simulations of different versions of the
sandpile model. We find that previous claims about universality classes are
unfounded, since the method previously employed to analyze the data suffered a
systematic bias. We identify the correct scaling behavior and conclude that
sandpiles with stochastic and deterministic toppling rules belong to the same

The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration,new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating,their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Casein haplotype structure in five Italian goat breeds
The aim of this work was to investigate the genetic structure of the casein gene cluster in 5 Italian goat breeds and to evaluate the haplotype variability within and among populations. A total of 430 goats from Vallesana, Roccaverano, Jonica, Garganica, and Maltese breeds were genotyped at alphas1-casein (CSN1S1), alphas2-casein, (CSN1S2), beta-casein (CSN2), and kappa-casein (CSN3) loci using several genomic techniques and milk protein analysis. Casein haplotype frequencies were estimated for each breed. Principal component analysis was carried out to highlight the relationship among breeds. Allele and haplotype distributions indicated considerable differences among breeds. The haplotype CSN1S1*F- CSN1S2*F-CSN3*D occurred in all breeds with frequencies >0.100 and was the most common haplotype in the Southern breeds. A high frequency of
CSN1S1*0-CSN1S2*C-CSN3*A haplotype was found in Vallesana population (0.162). Principal component analysis clearly separated the Northern and Southern breeds by the first component. The variability of the caprine casein loci and variety of resulting haplotypes should be exploited in the future using specific breeding programs aiming to preserve biodiversity and to select goat genetic lines for specific protein production
Gravity model in the Korean highway
We investigate the traffic flows of the Korean highway system, which contains
both public and private transportation information. We find that the traffic
flow T(ij) between city i and j forms a gravity model, the metaphor of physical
gravity as described in Newton's law of gravity, P(i)P(j)/r(ij)^2, where P(i)
represents the population of city i and r(ij) the distance between cities i and
j. It is also shown that the highway network has a heavy tail even though the
road network is a rather uniform and homogeneous one. Compared to the highway
network, air and public ground transportation establish inhomogeneous systems
