Anyonic interferometry and protected memories in atomic spin lattices
Strongly correlated quantum systems can exhibit exotic behavior called
topological order which is characterized by non-local correlations that depend
on the system topology. Such systems can exhibit remarkable phenomena such as
quasi-particles with anyonic statistics and have been proposed as candidates
for naturally fault-tolerant quantum computation. Despite these remarkable
properties, anyons have never been observed in nature directly. Here we
describe how to unambiguously detect and characterize such states in recently
proposed spin lattice realizations using ultra-cold atoms or molecules trapped
in an optical lattice. We propose an experimentally feasible technique to
access non-local degrees of freedom by performing global operations on trapped
spins mediated by an optical cavity mode. We show how to reliably read and
write topologically protected quantum memory using an atomic or photonic qubit.
Furthermore, our technique can be used to probe statistics and dynamics of

Fate of Listeria monocytogenes and Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli on Bresaola Slices During Storage
The viability of multistrain cocktails of genetically marked strains of Listeria monocytogenes and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) were separately monitored on slices of one brand of a commercially produced bresaola (ca. pH 6.7 and aw 0.899) during extended storage at refrigeration and abusive temperatures. Two slices (ca. 8 g each; ca.10.2 cm wide, ca. 11 cm long) of bresaola were layered horizontally within a nylon-polyethylene bag. The outer surface of each slice was inoculated (50ÎŒL total; ca. 3.5 log colony-forming units [CFU]/package) with a rifampicin-resistant (100ÎŒg/mL) cocktail of either L. monocytogenes (5 strains) or STEC (8 strains). Bags were vacuum-sealed and then stored at 4°C or 10°C for 180 or 90 d, respectively. In each of 5 trials, 3 bags were analyzed for pathogen presence at each sampling interval via the US Department of AgricultureâAgricultural Research Service package rinse method. In general, levels of L. monocytogenes and STEC decreased by 3.0 and 2.4 log CFU/package, respectively, after 180 d when bresaola was stored at 4°C. When bresaola was stored at 10°C for 90 d, levels of L. monocytogenes and STEC decreased by 2.4 and 3.1 log CFU/package, respectively. Thus, the sliced bresaola evaluated herein did not provide a favorable environment for either persistence or outgrowth of surface-inoculated cells of L. monocytogenes or STEC

The Eleventh and Twelfth Data Releases of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Final Data from SDSS-III
The third generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) took data from 2008 to 2014 using the original SDSS wide-field imager, the original and an upgraded multi-object fiber-fed optical spectrograph, a new near-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, and a novel optical interferometer. All of the data from SDSS-III are now made public. In particular, this paper describes Data Release 11 (DR11) including all data acquired through 2013 July, and Data Release 12 (DR12) adding data acquired through 2014 July (including all data included in previous data releases), marking the end of SDSS-III observing. Relative to our previous public release (DR10), DR12 adds one million new spectra of galaxies and quasars from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) over an additional 3000 deg2 of sky, more than triples the number of H-band spectra of stars as part of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and includes repeated accurate radial velocity measurements of 5500 stars from the Multi-object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS). The APOGEE outputs now include the measured abundances of 15 different elements for each star. In total, SDSS-III added 5200 deg2 of ugriz imaging; 155,520 spectra of 138,099 stars as part of the Sloan Exploration of Galactic Understanding and Evolution 2 (SEGUE-2) survey; 2,497,484 BOSS spectra of 1,372,737 galaxies, 294,512 quasars, and 247,216 stars over 9376 deg2; 618,080 APOGEE spectra of 156,593 stars; and 197,040 MARVELS spectra of 5513 stars. Since its first light in 1998, SDSS has imaged over 1/3 of the Celestial sphere in five bands and obtained over five million astronomical spectra. \ua9 2015. The American Astronomical Society

Possible new defining presentation of mosaic tetrasomy 9p: multiple and recurrent pilomatrixoma
Tetrasomy 9p is a rare genetic syndrome resulting from two additional copies of the short arm of chromosome 9. Symptoms often present in the form of congenital abnormalities including cognitive disabilities, growth retardation, abnormal earlobes, congenital heart disease, and dysmorphia of the skull and face. Current literature suggests patients with tetrasomy 9p may exhibit any combination of these symptoms or, in rare instances, none at all. Although karyotyping, chromosomal microarray, and galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase activity analyses are the definitive diagnostic methods used, there remains a need for more robust clinical recognition in cases of mild phenotypic expression. Herein, we present a rare case of mosaic tetrasomy 9p in a long-term survival patient with multiple and recurrent pilomatrixomas, rare benign growths more commonly found in individuals under the age of 20. To our knowledge, only two previous reports have noted concurrent tetrasomy 9p with pilomatrixomas. We are the first to identify this phenotype in an adult tetrasomy 9p patient. Dermatopathology evaluation was conducted to verify our diagnoses. Our aim is to present a unique, additional case suggesting multiple pilomatrixomas as a new defining clinical presentation of mosaic tetrasomy 9p and to review the literature underlying the genetic changes associated with this syndrome
