    タブレットを動的に組み合わせられるタイルドディスプレイシステムの開発

     本研究では, 4 台のモバイル端末を動的に並べ替えられるモバイルタイルドディスプレイシステムを開発した. モバイル端末のフロントカメラを用いて AR マーカーや顔をトラッキングし, 端末の相対位置を推定する. 近年, スマートフォンやタブレットなどのモバイル端末が普及しており, 東京地区のスマートフォン所有率は約 78%, タブレット所有率は 41%である. また,Youtube や Netflix 等の動画配信サービスが普及し, 様々な映像コンテンツが供給されている. しかし, 高精細な動画を視聴する際にはモバイル端末の画面は小さいと感じる人も多い. それを解決する技術として, タイルドディスプレイが挙げられる. タイルドディスプレイは複数のディスプレイを並べて大画面を実現する技術で,同じサイズの大画面ディスプレイを購入するよりも安価であることや運搬が容易であるという利点がある. タイルドディスプレイ技術は据え置きの大型ディスプレイによく用いられるが、スマートフォンやタブレットといったモバイル端末のモバイルディスプレイにも応用されている. 本研究では, モバイル端末を複数用いて大画面を構成することを考える. 既存のモバイルタイルドディスプレイと本研究の差異として,本研究ではタブレットのフロントカメラを用いて端末の位置を推定することで自動的に画面の描画領域を決定するという点が挙げられる. 本システムは映像を送信するサーバと, サーバから映像を受信して描画を行うクライアントアプリから構成され,サーバクライアント間はソケット通信によって接続される. 端末の相対位置の推定はクライアントアプリ上で AR マーカーと顔認識の 2 通りの方法を用いて行う. 本システムの性能評価について, ディスプレイの同期ずれについては, 平均約 0.1 秒のずれが生じており,現状では快適に動画を視聴できる状態とは言い難い. モバイルタイルドディスプレイの描画領域の設定完了までにかかる時間に関しては, 平均約 4 秒であったため, 動的に構築できるモバイルタイルドディスプレイの実用性を示せた.電気通信大学201

    The TUCAN3G project: wireless technologies for isolated rural communities in developing countries based on 3G small-cell deployments

    Recent years have witnessed a massive penetration of cellular systems in developing countries. However, isolated rural areas (sparsely inhabited by low-income population) have been disregarded because classical access and backhaul technologies do not ensure the return on investment. This article presents innovative techno-economical solutions to provide these areas with cellular voice and data services. We first analyze the general characteristics of isolated rural communities, and based on this information, low-cost solutions are designed for both access (using 3G access points) and backhaul networks (using non-carrier grade equipment as WiFi for long distances or WiMAX in non-licensed bands). Subsequently, a study of population-dependent income vs. costs is presented, and a new business model is proposed involving mobile network operators, rural operators, and infrastructure providers. In order to test these solutions, we have built two demonstration platforms in the Peruvian jungle that have allowed validation of the technical feasibility of the solution, verifying the business model assumptions and the scalability of the initiative.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Dual Targeting of Antioxidant and Metabolic Enzymes to the Mitochondrion and the Apicoplast of Toxoplasma gondii

    Toxoplasma gondii is an aerobic protozoan parasite that possesses mitochondrial antioxidant enzymes to safely dispose of oxygen radicals generated by cellular respiration and metabolism. As with most Apicomplexans, it also harbors a chloroplast-like organelle, the apicoplast, which hosts various biosynthetic pathways and requires antioxidant protection. Most apicoplast-resident proteins are encoded in the nuclear genome and are targeted to the organelle via a bipartite N-terminal targeting sequence. We show here that two antioxidant enzymes—a superoxide dismutase (TgSOD2) and a thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase (TgTPX1/2)—and an aconitase are dually targeted to both the apicoplast and the mitochondrion of T. gondii. In the case of TgSOD2, our results indicate that a single gene product is bimodally targeted due to an inconspicuous variation within the putative signal peptide of the organellar protein, which significantly alters its subcellular localization. Dual organellar targeting of proteins might occur frequently in Apicomplexans to serve important biological functions such as antioxidant protection and carbon metabolism

    How animals distribute themselves in space: energy landscapes of Antarctic avian predators

    Background: Energy landscapes provide an approach to the mechanistic basis of spatial ecology and decision- making in animals. This is based on the quantification of the variation in the energy costs of movements through a given environment, as well as how these costs vary in time and for different animal populations. Organisms as diverse as fish, mammals, and birds will move in areas of the energy landscape that result in minimised costs and maximised energy gain. Recently, energy landscapes have been used to link energy gain and variable energy costs of foraging to breeding success, revealing their potential use for understanding demographic changes. Methods: Using GPS-temperature-depth and tri-axial accelerometer loggers, stable isotope and molecular analyses of the diet, and leucocyte counts, we studied the response of gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) and chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus) penguins to different energy landscapes and resources. We compared species and gentoo penguin populations with contrasting population trends. Results: Between populations, gentoo penguins from Livingston Island (Antarctica), a site with positive population trends, foraged in energy landscape sectors that implied lower foraging costs per energy gained compared with those around New Island (Falkland/Malvinas Islands; sub-Antarctic), a breeding site with fluctuating energy costs of foraging, breeding success and populations. Between species, chinstrap penguins foraged in sectors of the energy landscape with lower foraging costs per bottom time, a proxy for energy gain. They also showed lower physiological stress, as revealed by leucocyte counts, and higher breeding success than gentoo penguins. In terms of diet, we found a flexible foraging ecology in gentoo penguins but a narrow foraging niche for chinstraps. Conclusions: The lower foraging costs incurred by the gentoo penguins from Livingston, may favour a higher breeding success that would explain the species’ positive population trend in the Antarctic Peninsula. The lower foraging costs in chinstrap penguins may also explain their higher breeding success, compared to gentoos from Antarctica but not their negative population trend. Altogether, our results suggest a link between energy landscapes and breeding success mediated by the physiological condition.     Decapping Protein Edc4 Regulates Dna Repair And Phenocopies Brca1

    BRCA1 is a tumor suppressor that regulates DNA repair by homologous recombination. Germline mutations in BRCA1 are associated with increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer and BRCA1 deficient tumors are exquisitely sensitive to poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors. Therefore, uncovering additional components of this DNA repair pathway is of extreme importance for further understanding cancer development and therapeutic vulnerabilities. Here, we identify EDC4, a known component of processing-bodies and regulator of mRNA decapping, as a member of the BRCA1-BRIP1-TOPBP1 complex. EDC4 plays a key role in homologous recombination by stimulating end resection at double-strand breaks. EDC4 deficiency leads to genome instability and hypersensitivity to DNA interstrand cross-linking drugs and PARP inhibitors. Lack-of-function mutations in EDC4 were detected in BRCA1/2-mutation-negative breast cancer cases, suggesting a role in breast cancer susceptibility. Collectively, this study recognizes EDC4 with a dual role in decapping and DNA repair whose inactivation phenocopies BRCA1 deficiency
