Monitoring induced denitrification during managed aquifer recharge in an infiltration pond
Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a well-known technique for improving water quality and increasing groundwater resources. Denitrification (i.e. removal of nitrate) can be enhanced during MAR by coupling an artificial recharge pond with a permeable reactive layer (PRL). In this study, we examined the suitability of a multi-isotope approach for assessing the long-term effectiveness of enhancing denitrification in a PRL containing vegetal compost. Batch laboratory experiments confirmed that the PRL was still able to enhance denitrification two years after its installation in the infiltration pond. At the field scale, changes in redox indicators along a flow path and below the MAR-PRL system were monitored over 21 months during recharge and non-recharge periods. Results showed that the PRL was still releasing non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon five years after its installation. Nitrate concentration coupled with isotopic data collected from the piezometer network at the MAR system indicated that denitrification was occurring in the saturated zone immediately beneath the infiltration pond, where recharged water and native groundwater mix. Furthermore, longer operational periods of the MAR-PRL system increased denitrification extent. Multi-isotope analyses are therefore proved to be useful tools in identifying and quantifying denitrification in MAR-PRL systems
Focused Coordination Models towards Sustainability in Higher Education. Case of Quevedo State Technical University (Ecuador)
This research studied the relationship between coordination models (CM) focused on sustainability and satisfaction, as a competitive advantage, which increases sustainability at the Quevedo State Technical University (UTEQ) in Ecuador. A survey in situ on a random sample of 3200 students was done in 2019. By using multivariate methods, an organizational typology was built. Next, CM were related to the level of student satisfaction by general linear model (GLM). Twenty-three organizational variables were grouped into six components that explained 66.23% of the variance. A typology with three groups was built: Cluster 1 with a moderate CM level (44.57% of the sample), Cluster 2 with a low level of CM (38.18%), and Cluster 3 with a high level of CM (15.25%). By GLM, a positive relation between typology and students’ levels of satisfaction was found. Therefore, an increase of CM turned into a major satisfaction level at UTEQ. We suggest, as a priority, to improve communication amongst students and administrative staff. Communication should be frequent, accurate, on time, and oriented to solve problems. It would also be positive to increase the CM amongst students and representatives in solving communication problems, sharing knowledge, goals, and mutual respect
Workshop: cooperative physical challenges

Structure and Dynamics of Large-Scale Cognitive Networks in Huntington's Disease
Altres ajuts: La Marató de TV3 (20142910).Background: Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by clinical alterations in the motor, behavioral, and cognitive domains. However, the structure and disruptions to large-scale brain cognitive networks have not yet been established. Objective: We aimed to profile changes in large-scale cognitive networks in premanifest and symptomatic patients with Huntington's disease. Methods: We prospectively recruited premanifest and symptomatic Huntington's disease mutation carriers as well as healthy controls. Clinical and sociodemographic data were obtained from all participants, and resting-state functional connectivity data, using both time-averaged and dynamic functional connectivity, was acquired from whole-brain and cognitively oriented brain parcellations. Results: A total of 64 gene mutation carriers and 23 healthy controls were included; 21 patients with Huntington's disease were classified as premanifest and 43 as symptomatic Huntington's disease. Compared with healthy controls, patients with Huntington's disease showed decreased network connectivity within the posterior hubs of the default-mode network and the medial prefrontal cortex, changes that correlated with cognitive (t = 2.25, P = 0.01) and disease burden scores (t = −2.42, P = 0.009). The salience network showed decreased functional connectivity between insular and supramarginal cortices and also correlated with cognitive (t = 2.11, P = 0.02) and disease burden scores (t = −2.35, P = 0.01). Dynamic analyses showed that network variability was decreased for default-central executive networks, a feature already present in premanifest mutation carriers (dynamic factor 8, P = 0.02). Conclusions: Huntington's disease shows an early and widespread disruption of large-scale cognitive networks. Importantly, these changes are related to cognitive and disease burden scores, and novel dynamic functional analyses uncovered subtler network changes even in the premanifest stages
The social and scientifc invisibility of sexual diversity in adult women, as well as a reductionist way to
understanding it, has led us to carry out a study with 523 adult women, with an average age of 38.52
years (SD = 6.83), of which 89.3% were considered heterosexual. Three sexual dimensions were evaluated: romantic attraction, sexual attraction and sexual behavior in the past, present and ideal future,
on a scale of 1 (only towards the other sex) to 5 (only towards the same sex). The results show a great
variety of sexual experiences in the different evaluated dimensions and changes depending on the temporal moment. In addition, a positive relationship between age and exclusively heterosexual attraction
and behavior was also observed. These results contribute to the understanding of female sexuality and
the design of sex education programs for adult women
Despite sociocultural changes, LGTBI people still have to face certain diffculties. The purpose of this
study is to explore discrimination and attitudes towards sexual-affective diversity in women. 145 women between 17 and 43 years old (M = 29,63; SD = 9,6) completed an ad hoc questionnaire about
discrimination and attitudes towards the LGTBI group. 18,7% of non-heterosexual women have suffered
sexual orientation / identity discrimination. More non-heterosexual women than heterosexuals (68% vs.
51,4%) have witnessed discrimination by these issues in their environment. We found certain negative
attitudes in both groups, especially in those items related to the expression of gender, bisexuality and
transsexuality. These fndings indicate the need to educate in diversity and make visible those groups that
are most excluded to achieve equity and respect
The analysis of food phenomena in a society at any given period provides evidence of its functioning and its social relations. This study aims to analyze the confinement experience caused by the state of alarm in Spain through food practices and representations of adult women, residents of urban areas of Catalonia. The analysis shows the social importance of food in the daily life experience during this period that has been experienced under different discourses and norms (of social organization, health, body, gender) that provoked dichotomous and dynamic practices that were (re)configured throughout the pandemic
COPD Clinical Control: predictors and long-term follow-up of the CHAIN cohort
CHAIN Study Investigators.[Background] Control in COPD is a dynamic concept that can reflect changes in patients’ clinical status that may have prognostic implications, but there is no information about changes in control status and its long-term consequences.[Methods] We classified 798 patients with COPD from the CHAIN cohort as controlled/uncontrolled at baseline and over 5 years. We describe the changes in control status in patients over long-term follow-up and analyze the factors that were associated with longitudinal control patterns and related survival using the Cox hazard analysis.[Results] 134 patients (16.8%) were considered persistently controlled, 248 (31.1%) persistently uncontrolled and 416 (52.1%) changed control status during follow-up. The variables significantly associated with persistent control were not requiring triple therapy at baseline and having a better quality of life. Annual changes in outcomes (health status, psychological status, airflow limitation) did not differ in patients, regardless of clinical control status. All-cause mortality was lower in persistently controlled patients (5.5% versus 19.1%, p = 0.001). The hazard ratio for all-cause mortality was 2.274 (95% CI 1.394–3.708; p = 0.001). Regarding pharmacological treatment, triple inhaled therapy was the most common option in persistently uncontrolled patients (72.2%). Patients with persistent disease control more frequently used bronchodilators for monotherapy (53%) at recruitment, although by the end of the follow-up period, 20% had scaled up their treatment, with triple therapy being the most frequent therapeutic pattern.[Conclusions] The evaluation of COPD control status provides relevant prognostic information on survival. There is important variability in clinical control status and only a small proportion of the patients had persistently good control. Changes in the treatment pattern may be relevant in the longitudinal pattern of COPD clinical control. Further studies in other populations should validate our results.[Trial registration] Clinical Trials.gov: identifier NCT01122758.This study has been funded by AstraZeneca.Peer reviewe
