New Management Discourses: Difussion, impacts and resistances

Multi feature-rich synthetic colour to improve human visual perception of point clouds
Although point features have shown their usefulness in classification with Machine Learning, point cloud visualization enhancement methods focus mainly on lighting. The visualization of point features helps to improve the perception of the 3D environment. This paper proposes Multi Feature-Rich Synthetic Colour (MFRSC) as an alternative non-photorealistic colour approach of natural-coloured point clouds. The method is based on the selection of nine features (reflectance, return number, inclination, depth, height, point density, linearity, planarity, and scattering) associated with five human perception descriptors (edges, texture, shape, size, depth, orientation). The features are reduced to fit the RGB display channels. All feature permutations are analysed according to colour distance with the natural-coloured point cloud and Image Quality Assessment. As a result, the selected feature permutations allow a clear visualization of the scene's rendering objects, highlighting edges, planes, and volumetric objects. MFRSC effectively replaces natural colour, even with less distorted visualization according to BRISQUE, NIQUE and PIQE. In addition, the assignment of features in RGB channels enables the use of MFRSC in software that does not support colorization based on point attributes (most commercially available software). MFRSC can be combined with other non-photorealistic techniques such as Eye-Dome Lighting or Ambient Occlusion.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. ED481B-2019-061Xunta de Galicia | Ref. Generation of simple analytical models for message passing applications
We present a methodology which allows to derive accurate and simple models which are able to describe the performance of parallel applications without looking at the source code. A trace is obtained and linear models are derived by fitting the outcome of a set of simulations varying the influential parameters, such as: processor speed, network latency or bandwidth. The simplicity of the linear models allows for natural derivation of interpretations for the corresponding factors of the model, allowing for both prediction accuracy and interpretability to be maintained. We explain how we plan to extend this approach to extrapolate from these models to be apply it to predict for processor counts different to the one of the given traces.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Anxiety and mild microglial activation in the amygdala two weeks after NA-induced neuroinflammation
A single injection of neuraminidase (NA) within the cerebral ventricles (ICV) triggers an acute neuroinflammation. Neurological complications or behavioral alterations have been associated to neuroinflammation. While some of these symptoms decline with time along with inflammation, the possibility of long-term sequelae should be considered. Thus, we aimed to explore if NA-induced neuroinflammation provokes behavioral or neurological disturbances at medium (2 weeks) and long (10 weeks) term. Rats were ICV injected with NA or saline. First, neurological alterations of the sensorimotor reflexes were not found, suggesting that NA does not cause disturbances in major brain functions. While the open field test revealed normal locomotor capacity in the animals injected with NA, however the evaluation of specific behaviors (rearing and rearing with support) pointed out an increased anxiety state 2 weeks after NA administration, but not at long term (10 weeks). A histological study of brain areas related to emotions (amygdala) and stress response (hypothalamic PVN) revealed no significant differences in the number of microglia or astrocytes. Nevertheless, the morphological analysis of microglial cells demonstrated that, in the amygdala of NA injected rats, microglia presented a morphology consistent with a slightly activated state. Such morphological change, which was evident 2 weeks after NA injection, was virtually reverted 10 weeks post-ICV. These results point out that NA injected ICV may cause anxiety in the medium term (while not affecting other functions like sensorimotor functions or the locomotor capacity), a behavioral alteration that is transient and that concurs with a mild inflammation, evidenced by the overexpression of certain genes and, more notably, by the morphological bias of microglial cells located in the amygdala towards an activated profile.Universidad de Málaga. Analysis of the Psychosocial Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Nursing Staff of the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in Spain
COVID-19; Enfermeras; Unidad de cuidados intensivosCOVID-19; Nurses; Intensive care unitCOVID-19; Infermeres; Unitat de cures intensives(1) The public health emergency, caused by COVID-19, has resulted in strong physical and mental exhaustion in healthcare workers. This research has been designed with the aim to describe the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses working in intensive care units (ICU) and identify the related risk factors. (2) This is a cross-sectional study, in which a self-administered questionnaire was designed to cover the dimensions of interest associated with psychosocial factors during the pandemic and their factor risks. (3) A total of 456 nursing professionals participated, and 88.4% were women. Most of the professionals had a temporary contract (71.3%) and person at risk close to them (88.8%). Regarding psychosocial factors, there was a worsening in most of the associated variables, especially in sleep problems, anxiety, stress, and job performance. Female nurses were more prone to anxiety. Those under 30, as well as those with temporary contracts, were more unfocused. Professionals with a person at risk in their environment felt much more worried. The degree of exposure was associated with greater fear. (4) Those nurses who were female, younger, and with a temporary employment contract were shown to be more vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic on their psychosocial health. Because of this, it is necessary to adopt effective strategies for the protection of nurses’ health, focusing on the specific risk factors identified
Pulsed negative pressure myofascial vacuum therapy and percutaneous electrolysis in the treatment of lateral epicondylalgia: A single-blind randomized controlled trial
Background
Lateral Epicondylalgia (LE) represents one of the most common injuries of the upper limb. It is necessary to find effective treatments that reduce pain and increase functionality.
Purpose
To determine the effects of an integrated intervention of Pulsed Negative Pressure Myofascial Vacuum Therapy (VT), Percutaneous Electrolysis (PE) and eccentric exercise (EE) in the treatment of LE compared versus Manual Therapy soft tissue mobilization (MT) and Ultrasound therapy (US) and EE.
Study design
Single-blind randomized controlled trial.
Methods
Forty participants, with unilateral LE, were randomly divided into two groups: VT + PE + EE group (n = 20) and MT + US + EE group (n = 20). The VT + PE + EE group received one weekly session for four weeks and a regimen of EE daily at-home, and the MT + US + EE group received 10 sessions over a period of two weeks and a regimen of EE daily at-home. Numerical pain rating scale (NPRS), range of motion (ROM) pressure pain threshold (PPT) and function (PRTEE questionnaire) were measured before treatment, at the end of treatment, and at one- and three-month follow-ups.
Results
The statistically significant improvements were found post-treatment, favoring the VT + PE group in pain intensity (p < 0.001; ES = 0.408), PRTEE-S Pain (p = 0.001; ES = 0.377), PRTEE-S Specific function (p = 0.004; ES = 0.306) and PRTEE-S Total (p = 0.001; ES = 0.355). The VT + PE + EE treatment showed greater effectiveness than the MT + US + EE treatment at immediate post-treatment, as well as at the one-month and three-months follow-up.
Conclusions
VT and PE added to an EE program could be an effective treatment for pain, ROM, PPT, and function in patients with LE.
