The present investigation has as main objective the study of social cognition in
schizophrenia, specifically the identification and recognition of basic emotions by patients
diagnosed with a schizophrenic disorder. It was intended to also assess what emotions are more
and less recognized, as well as differences in the prevalence of emotions, gender of the stimulus
presented, the respondent's gender and age, symptoms and clinical stage and subtype of
schizophrenia.
To this end, we evaluated 30 subjects previously diagnosed with a schizophrenic disorder
and 30 subjects belonging to the normative group. Thus, the 60 individuals who participated in
this study were assessed using a social demographic questionnaire, in order to collect personal
data that would allow later correlation with the recognition of emotions. The second part
consisted of applying the BPRS (Brief Psychiatry Rating Scale), which aimed to evaluate the
positive and negative symptoms. Finally, we used a computer platform (I-emotions) developed
and provided by Prof. Freitas-Magalhães. By the same were presented seven basic emotions
(happiness, disgust, anger, contempt, sadness, fear, surprise) and the neutral face, for two
stimuli of both sexes.
The results point to deficits in emotion recognition by patients with schizophrenia
(especially in disgust, surprise and neutral face). The most recognized emotion was joy, on the
other hand fear gave rise to more difficulties in the recognition. There were no significant
differences in personal variables (age and gender) or clinical (symptoms and clinical stage and
subtype of schizophrenia). However on the latter we can infer some generic conclusions, namely
patients with schizophrenia in the process of acute phase or more symptoms have more difficulty
in recognizing basic emotions and a greater reluctance in providing an answer

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone
As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
