    Does electoral violence affect vote choice and willingness to vote? Conjoint analysis of a vignette experiment

    Across many new democracies, voters routinely elect candidates associated with violence. Though electoral violence is common, there is little understanding of how it affects voting behaviour. This article examines how electoral violence affects turnout and vote choice. To this end, a vignette experiment is set in a nationally representative survey in Kenya, where electoral violence has been present since the 1990s. In the experiment, voters choose between two rival politicians. The experiment randomises candidates’ attributes, their rumoured use of electoral violence, and their record of reducing poverty. Conjoint analysis is used to isolate the effects of the candidates’ randomised attributes on turnout and vote choice. In contrast to the assumptions made in the literature on electoral violence, voters are less likely to vote for candidates rumoured to have used electoral violence, even when the candidate is a coethnic or a copartisan. This sanctioning effect, however, is not consistent across all voters. Victims of electoral violence and the poorest respondents are less likely to sanction candidates rumoured to have used violence, especially when these candidates have a good record of reducing poverty. The results show that voting turnout decreases when participants are asked to choose between candidates who are rumoured to have used electoral violence. These results are robust to including respondent and interviewer characteristics that might have affected participation in the experiment and how respondents voted. These findings explain why candidates using violence can win elections and why electoral violence has been difficult to eradicate in settings characterised by clientelism and instances of political discourse justifying the use of violence

    Five-year follow-up of bilateral stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus in advanced Parkinson's disease

    Background: Although the short-term benefits of bilateral stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease have been well documented, the long-term outcomes of the procedure are unknown. Methods: We conducted a five-year prospective study of the first 49 consecutive patients whom we treated with bilateral stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus. Patients were assessed at one, three, and five years with levodopa (on medication) and without levodopa (off medication), with use of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. Seven patients did not complete the study: three died, and four were lost to follow-up. Results: As compared with base line, the patients' scores at five years for motor function while off medication improved by 54 percent (P<0.001) and those for activities of daily living improved by 49 percent (P<0.001). Speech was the only motor function for which off-medication scores did not improve. The scores for motor function on medication did not improve one year after surgery, except for the dyskinesia scores. On-medication akinesia, speech, postural stability, and freezing of gait worsened between year 1 and year 5 (P<0.001 for all comparisons). At five years, the dose of dopaminergic treatment and the duration and severity of levodopa-induced dyskinesia were reduced, as compared with base line (P<0.001 for each comparison). The average scores for cognitive performance remained unchanged, but dementia developed in three patients after three years. Mean depression scores remained unchanged. Severe adverse events included a large intracerebral hemorrhage in one patient. One patient committed suicide. Conclusions: Patients with advanced Parkinson's disease who were treated with bilateral stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus had marked improvements over five years in motor function while off medication and in dyskinesia while on medication. There was no control group, but worsening of akinesia, speech, postural stability, freezing of gait, and cognitive function between the first and the fifth year is consistent with the natural history of Parkinson's disease

    Introduction Sirolimus is an immunosupressant used in renal transplantation because of its lack of nephrotoxicity. We report four cases of pneumonitis due to sirolimus, possibly revealing an interaction with atorvastatin. Case report Four patients (previously on long-term treatment with atorvastatin) presented with respiratory symptoms between 3 and 56 months after starting treatment with sirolimus following renal transplantation. Thoracic CT scans showed bilateral areas of peripheral alveolar consolidation. Bronchial lavage showed a lymphocytic alveolitis. Open-lung biopsy showed organizing pneumonia associated with diffuse alveolar damage and caseating granulomata. We attributed the pneumonitis to sirolimus on account of clinical and radiological resolution within 1 to 6 months of stopping treatment. We raise the possibility of an association between sirolimus and atorvastatin by competition for their hepatic degradation pathway via cytochrome P450 3A4. Conclusion Sirolimus causes drug-induced pneumonitis that is predominantly an organizing pneumonia. Atorvastatin may encourage its development by competition with sirolimus in the liver

    Modeling and numerical study of primary breakup under diesel conditions

    A recently introduced stochastic model for reduced numerical simulation of primary jet breakup is evaluated by comparing model predictions to DNS results for primary jet breakup under diesel conditions. The model uses one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) to simulate liquid and gas time advancement along a lateral line of sight. This one-dimensional domain is interpreted as a Lagrangian object that is advected downstream at the jet bulk velocity, thus producing a flow state expressed as a function of streamwise and lateral location. Multiple realizations are run to gather ensemble statistics that are compared to DNS results. The model incorporates several empirical extensions of the original ODT model that represent the phenomenology governing the Weber number dependence of global jet structure. The model as previously formulated, including the assigned values of tunable parameters, is used here without modification in order to test its capability to predict various statistics of droplets generated by primary breakup. This test is enabled by the availability of DNS results that are suitable for model validation. Properties that are examined are the rate of bulk liquid mass conversion into droplets, the droplet size distribution, and the dependence of droplet velocities on droplet diameter. Quantities of greatest importance for engine modeling are found to be predicted with useful accuracy, thereby demonstrating a more detailed predictive capability by a highly reduced numerical model of primary jet breakup than has previously been achieved

    Rectal Swabs as an Alternative Sample Collection Method to Bulk Stool for the Real-Time PCR Detection of \u3ci\u3eGiardia duodenalis\u3c/i\u3e

    Though bulk stool remains the gold standard specimen type for enteropathogen diagnosis, rectal swabs may offer comparable sensitivity with greater ease of collection for select pathogens. This study sought to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of rectal swabs as a sample collection method for the molecular diagnosis of Giardia duodenalis. Paired rectal swab and bulk stool samples were collected from 86 children ages 0–4 years living in southwest Niger, with duplicate samples collected among a subset of 50 children. Infection was detected using a previously validated real-time PCR diagnostic targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. Giardia duodenalis was detected in 65.5% (55/84) of bulk stool samples and 44.0% (37/84) of swab samples. The kappa evaluating test agreement was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.54–1.00) among duplicate stool samples (N = 49) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.47–1.00) among duplicate rectal swabs (N = 48). Diagnostic sensitivity was 93% (95% CI: 84–98) by bulk stool and 63% (95% CI: 49–75) by rectal swabs. When restricting to the lowest three quartiles of bulk stool quantitation cycle values (an indication of relatively high parasite load), sensitivity by rectal swabs increased to 78.0% (95% CI: 64–89, P \u3c 0.0001). These findings suggest that rectal swabs provide less sensitive and reproducible results than bulk stool for the real-time PCR diagnosis of G. duodenalis. However, their fair sensitivity for higher parasite loads suggests that swabs may be a useful tool for detecting higher burden infections when stool collection is excessively expensive or logistically challenging

    Polygynous animals are often highly dimorphic, and show large sex-differences in the degree of intra-sexual competition and aggression, which is associated with biased operational sex ratios (OSR). For socially monogamous, sexually monomorphic species, this relationship is less clear. Among mammals, pair-living has sometimes been assumed to imply equal OSR and low frequency, low intensity intra-sexual competition; even when high rates of intra-sexual competition and selection, in both sexes, have been theoretically predicted and described for various taxa. Owl monkeys are one of a few socially monogamous primates. Using long-term demographic and morphological data from 18 groups, we show that male and female owl monkeys experience intense intra-sexual competition and aggression from solitary floaters. Pair-mates are regularly replaced by intruding floaters (27 female and 23 male replacements in 149 group-years), with negative effects on the reproductive success of both partners. Individuals with only one partner during their life produced 25% more offspring per decade of tenure than those with two or more partners. The termination of the pair-bond is initiated by the floater, and sometimes has fatal consequences for the expelled adult. The existence of floaters and the sporadic, but intense aggression between them and residents suggest that it can be misleading to assume an equal OSR in socially monogamous species based solely on group composition. Instead, we suggest that sexual selection models must assume not equal, but flexible, context-specific, OSR in monogamous species.Wenner-Gren Foundation, L.S.B.     A consistent, scalable model for Eulerian spray modeling

    Despite great practical interest in how sprays emanate from fuel injectors, the near-nozzle region has remained a challenge for spray modelers. Recently, Eulerian models have shown promise in capturing the fast gas-liquid interactions in the near field. However, with the inclusion of compressibility, it can be difficult to maintain consistency between the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic variables. In order to resolve numerical inconsistencies that occur in segregated solutions of Eulerian spray model equations as well as to provide good scalability and stability, a new construction of a -Y model is introduced. This construction is built around an IMEX-RK3 algorithm which offers accuracy and efficiency. The new algorithm is compared to an existing implementation for speed and is validated against experimental measurements of spray evolution in order to test the accuracy. The predictions of the new construction are slightly more accurate and, when tested on 256 processors, are 34 times faster.Also this research used the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), which is supported by National Science Foundation grant number ACI-1053575.
