Two new species of the genus Thouarella from Antarctic waters are described and illustrated from material collected on the Polarstern cruises ANT XVII/3 (EASIZ III), ANT XIX/5 (LAMPOS) and ANT XXI/2 (BENDEX). On the one hand, Thouarella viridis sp. nov. is placed in the subgenus Epithouarella due to the characteristic ornamentation of its marginal scales (the previously most recent species in this group was included by Ku¨kenthal in Zool Anz 33(1): 9–20, 1908). On the other hand, Thouarella minuta sp. nov. is included in subgenus Thouarella among the 14 species currently recognised, the main distinct feature being tiny polyps. Furthermore, a complete redescription is given of Thouarella laxa Versluys, 1906. Using the new technology available nowadays, such as images obtained with SEM, we provide accurate images of the polyps and sclerites. In addition, as a result of this study, T. laxa and its closest congener T. tydemani Versluys, 1906 are maintained as separate species, mainly due to their internal sculpture of body and coenenchymal scales

The literary double or Doppelgänger has a long critical tradition. However, in this tradition prevails a notable ambiguity concerning its definition, typology and genesis. The present doctoral dissertation offers a theory of the Doppelgänger, within the codes of fantastic literature, and a research of its anthropological and cultural roots, followed by an aesthetic approach to the classical works about the motif (those composed by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Edgar Allan Poe, Gérard de Nerval, Dostoievski or Henry James, among others). This is the first comprehensive study about the double in the Spanish short story of the 19th and 20th centuries. As this research demonstrates, the Spanish contemporary short story, from its romantic productions to the most recent works, provides an exceptional frame to the double's development. The Doppelgänger has been a privileged motif for relevant writers such as José Zorrilla, Leopoldo Alas «Clarín», Emilia Pardo Bazán, Miguel de Unamuno, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Alonso Zamora Vicente, José María Merino, Cristina Fernández Cubas or Javier Marías

Distribution, reproductive ecology, and colouration of the Arctic skate Amblyraja hyperborea (Collett, 1879) in the North Atlantic Ocean

    Get PDF
Amblyraja hyperborea is the cartilaginous fish with the widest distribution across the Arctic seas and shelves and yet, large parts of its biology remain unknown. In a changing climate where the ice cover in the polar regions is retreating and fisheries are expanding northward, studying poorly known species is more important than ever. To provide a more exhaustive understanding of this species, horizontal and vertical distributions and temporal trends in the North Atlantic Ocean were evaluated, length at first maturity (L50) was estimated and potential nursery grounds were searched for. Additionally, the most common patterns of ventral colouration were described, and the variation of the colouration coverage was investigated. A transboundary approach was applied with data provided by four countries. Amblyraja hyperborea was found in every area surveyed, though not being evenly distributed and clustering along the shelf breaks, and the abundance observations of was found to decrease below 65ºN. The vertical distribution did not depend on sex nor size, and the majority of the observations were made from 200 to 1000 m depth. No conclusive temporal trends could be defined. The estimated L50 for females was of 70.5 cm total length (TL) and for males of 66.8 cm TL, and some indices of potential nursery grounds were found in Iceland and the Barents Sea. Lastly, distribution was found to play a role in the ventral colouration coverage, with lighter individuals being dominant in the eastern side of the study area, and darker individuals being most present in the western side. Overall, the transboundary approach was successful in the in-depth study of A. hyperborea, even with the limitations of the data. This study can serve as a baseline for future studies regarding other poorly known transboundary species

This paper deals with the translation of the touristic website genre and more specifically the localisation of websites. Furthermore, the use of maps online as multilingual guides to attract visitors will be discussed. Six websites, one per each of the most important cities of the Autonomous Community of Galicia have been analysed. This study will reveal how several linguistic and visual strategies were involved in the creation of colourful, inspiring, and relaxing websites which make use of concise texts and maps throughout some of the thematic links. Also, the role of public institutions will be accounted for since these have a major impact on the resources available to create these visual guides and promote touristic destinations.

Postnatal characterization of cells in the accessory olfactory bulb of wild type and reeler mice

Olfaction is the most relevant chemosensory sense of the rodents. General odors are primarily detected by the main olfactory system while most pheromonal signals are received by the accessory olfactory system. The first relay in the brain occurs in the olfactory bulb, which is subdivided in the main and accessory olfactory bulb (MOB/AOB). Given that the cell generation time is different between AOB and MOB, and the cell characterization of AOB remains limited, the goal of this work was first, the definition of the layering of AOB/MOB and second, the determination of cellular phenotypes in the AOB in a time window corresponding to the early postnatal development. Moreover, since reelin (Reln) deficiency has been related to olfactory learning deficits, we analyzed reeler mice. First, we compared the layering between AOB and MOB at early embryonic stages. Then, cell phenotypes were established using specific neuronal and glial markers as well as the Reln adaptor protein Dab1 to analyse differences in both genetic backgrounds. There was no apparent difference in the cell phenotypes among AOB and MOB or between wild type (wt) and reeler animals. However, a disruption in the granular cell layer of reeler with respect to wt mice was observed. In conclusion, the AOB in Reln-deficient mice showed similar neuronal and glial cell types being only affected the organization of granular neurons

Magic in the image : the artistic process as a ritual exercise in the work of Nuria Riaza

The objective of this text is to establish analogies between the creative methodology of Nuria Riaza and the ritual exercises, for which we will make a tour of the magical and dreamlike themes of her pieces. The thematic core of the article will be the study of the ballpoint pen as a determinant of the understanding of the final work. The plot drawn by Riaza refers to the fabric, and this to long process durations and the possible therapeutic nature of these. All these questions will be addressed from the perspective of the artistic process understood as a rite of passageinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Bayesian joint spatio-temporal analysis of multiple diseases

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a Bayesian hierarchical spatio-temporal model for the joint analysis of multiple diseases which includes specific and shared spatial and temporal effects. Dependence on shared terms is controlled by disease-specific weights so that their posterior distribution can be used to identify diseases with similar spatial and temporal patterns. The model proposed here has been used to study three different causes of death (oral cavity, esophagus and stomach cancer) in Spain at the province level. Shared and specific spatial and temporal effects have been estimated and mapped in order to study similarities and differences among these causes. Furthermore, estimates using Markov chain Monte Carlo and the integrated nested Laplace approximation are compared.Peer Reviewe
