    Respect and Responsibility towards Youth

    Get PDF
Youth is a grateful topic and has a rich body of scholarly research, particularly in the fields of education, youth sociology, and political science. However, the recognition and appreciation of the philosophical approach is often lacking in research, politics, and public discourse alike. This study aims to draw attention to the importance of the philosophical perspective. It focuses on philosophical ideas found in antiquity, modernity, and postmodernity (from Socrates to Hegel and all the way to Derrida) that remain relevant regardless of historical time or specific societal forms. Drawing philosophical insights is particularly crucial for politics and education. As Derrida believes, no ethics or politics can remain authentic and true if they do not respect the future, that is, the youth. And in this regard, I think we can all agree

Humorous Writing Exercise Using Internet Memes on English Classes

This study discusses Internet memes found by Internet users and how they appeal for them, by deconstructing what internet meme is and what it does. Analysis are conducted especially on how the relation between images, text, and meanings connect with each other to form social messages, political messages, universal emotions, or merely to make humor and entertain its users. Researcher examines five samples of internet memes on the internet and decodes their relation between images, texts, and meanings using semiotics. These samples are then introduced as writing assignments to two BINUS University's English department classes and one Global English Class. The study reveals that humor and creativity in using internet memes are related to the students' achievement in their studies

Representation of Marxism in Vampires in Havana

Article presents an animated film related to ideological development in Cuba. This effort brings an understanding of ideology and cultural policy of Cuba as a communist state. Presentation begins with summary of the story, history and background, ideological concepts, and the movie Vampires in Havana itself. It is concluded that the film represents ideological disputes between capitalism and Marxism in Cuba, as well as giving an ideal perspective on how the world should work

Malay Pop: Mass Media Hegemony in Indonesia Popular Music

Article discusses the domination of Malay pop music through textual analysis of songs, observation of musical programs, and interviews with important figures. The research data were obtained by library research and analyzed through a critical theory approach to gain an understanding of the text and its effects. The article concludes that Malay pop contains a strong uniformity which may be termed a phenomenon in the context of the culture industry, while also being dominant because of its legitimacy created by the media. The nature of Malay pop is also very profitable for those participating in it, therefore the spirit of capitalism was also quite dominant in this context. There is also resistance from the indie music movement, and its attempts to fight regressive qualities of music that are legitimized in the mainstream mass media

Article presents a song by Rage against the Machine band related to ideological movement in America, titled Sleep Now in the Fire. This effort brings an understanding of ideology that is embraced by the band. The method is through literature study. Presentation begins with a short biography of the band, theoretical concepts, and analysis of the song as well its music video. It is concluded that the song represents ideological criticism toward capitalism using Marxism. Both of these lyric and music video represents Marxism as it shares the same movement to fight capitalism—which in this case, Rage against the Machine is using their music, lyric, and video to fight the crime against humanity and cultural imperialism

Large-Scale Agile Project Management in Safety-Critical Industries: A Case Study on Challenges and Solutions

    Get PDF
While agile project management offers benefits such as faster time to market and improved collaboration, scaling it to larger projects presents challenges, particularly in safety-critical industries. This research provides insights into the resistance to agile adoption due to regulatory constraints and other barriers. The findings contribute to information systems literature by identifying four challenges (organizational, technological, behavioral, regulatory) and complementing solutions to show how large-scale agile can work in safety-critical industries

A technique for extracting potentially predictable patterns from climate data

    Get PDF
We propose a computational technique which makes it possible to extract long-range potentially predictable patterns of interannual variability of meteorological seasonal mean fields. These patterns arise from slowly varying external forcing, such as sea surface temperatures, and slowly varying internal dynamics. The method provides a means of decomposing the covariance matrix of a seasonal mean field into covariance matrices for the potentially predictable and the chaotic, or weather-noise, components, separately. We illustrate the technique using Australian surface maximum temperatures during December-January-February (DJF) for the period 1958--1991. The dominant patterns, arising from the potentially predictable covariance matrix, are shown to be more closely related to slowly varying external forcing and slowly varying internal dynamics than those from a conventional analysis. The importance of tropical sea surface temperatures in forcing the potentially predictable patterns is also discussed

Evading innate immunity in nonviral mRNA delivery : don't shoot the messenger

    Get PDF
In de field of non-viral gene therapy, in vitro transcribed (IVT) mRNA has emerged as a promising tool for the delivery of genetic information. Over the past few years it has become widely known the introduction of IVT mRNA into mammalian cells elicits an innate immune response which has favored mRNA use towards immunotherapeutic vaccination strategies. However, for non-immunotherapy related applications this intrinsic immune-stimulatory activity directly interferes with the aimed therapeutic outcome, as it can seriously compromise the expression of the desired protein. This review presents an overview of the immune-related obstacles that limit mRNA advance for non-immunotherapy related applications
