Intravitreal ranibizumab as a primary or a combined treatment for severe retinopathy of prematurity
Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the outcomes of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in zone I or posterior zone II treated with intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) as monotherapy or combined treatment with laser photocoagulation. Methods: This is a retrospective study analyzing clinical records of the included patients. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 included patients who received only IVR treatment; and group 2 was subdivided into group 2A – including patients with IVR as initial treatment and complementary laser photocoagulation if retinal neovascularization or plus disease did not regress, and group 2B – including patients with initial laser photocoagulation and IVR as rescue therapy. Favorable outcomes were regression of the retinal neovascularization and plus disease, meaning control of the disease. Unfavorable outcomes were progression to stages 4 and 5 of ROP. Results: Fifty-seven eyes were included in the study. Mean birth weight and gestational age were 1,281±254 g and 29.5±2.1 weeks, respectively. Group 1 comprised of 16 eyes, with favorable outcomes in 14 eyes (87.5%). Group 2 comprised of 41 eyes, with favorable outcomes in 29 eyes (70.7%), in a mean follow-up period of 12.8 months. Conclusion: IVR was effective to treat severe cases of ROP as a primary or a combined treatment. Forty-three of the 57 treated eyes (75.4%) achieved regression of ROP and favorable outcomes
Reducing the environmental impact of surgery on a global scale: systematic review and co-prioritization with healthcare workers in 132 countries
Abstract
Background
Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres.
Methods
This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries.
Results
In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia.
Conclusion
This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

FR 14. Effects of 14 days calf removal and/or bull exposure upon productive and reproductive perfomance in Hereford cows. Preliminar analysis (Two years)
The objetive of this study was to determine whether 14 day calf removal (C.R.) and/or bull exposure (B.E.) could affect reproductive perfomance and weaning weight. Ninety one Hereford multiparous cows over two years were allotted to four treatments when they were of 50 days postpartum at least. A vasectomized bull was introduced to the B.E. and C.R. groups until the natural service started. Different cow fertility parameters were analyzed: pregnancy rate and days between january 1º to next calving. In order to appreciate the effect of C.R. between treated and control calves weaning weight was analyzed. Significant differences were found in one year. As concluded, B.E.C.R. had no contraindications and could improve the reproductive perfomance affecting the weaning weight when pasture is not available

Arrhythmias in Chagasic Cardiomyopathy
Chagas disease, a chronic parasitosis caused by the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi, is an increasing worldwide problem because of the number of cases in endemic areas and the migration of infected individuals to more developed regions. Chagas disease affects the heart through cardiac parasympathetic neuronal depopulation, immune-mediated myocardial injury, parasite persistence in cardiac tissue with secondary antigenic stimulation, and coronary microvascular abnormalities causing myocardial ischemia. A lack of knowledge exists for risk stratification, management, and prevention of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with chagasic cardiomyopathy. Catheter ablation can be effective for the management of recurrent ventricular tachycardia
Oligosaccharins and Pectimorf® Stimulate Root Elongation and Shorten the Cell Cycle in Higher Plants
The aim was to test promotive effects of oligosaccharins on root growth and development at the root apical meristem and the cell cycle using the model systems, Arabidopsis thaliana and the tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) BY-2 cell line. Arabidopsis was grown on medium supplemented with 0.1 mg L−1 oligoxyloglucan (OX), 10 mg L−1 Pectimorf® (P) or 0.5 mg L−1 indole butyric acid (IBA). Primary root length, number of lateral root primordia, root apical meristem (RAM) length and epidermal cell length were recorded. Three genotypes were used: wild type (WT) and transgenic lines expressing either Schizosaccharomyces pombe (Sp) cdc25 or over-expressing(oe) Arath;WEE1. All treatments promoted primary root elongation but repressed lateral root production. Only P had a clear positive effect on meristem length whereas all other genotype × treatment interactions showed shorter RAMs. Whilst IBA, OX and P induced an increase in cell length in Spcdc25, the same treatments caused a significant decrease in WEE1 oe . Mitotic indices were also significantly higher in roots treated with oligosaccharins suggesting a shortening of the cell cycle. This hypothesis was tested in the BY-2 cell line. Both OX and P shortened the cell cycle exclusively through a shortening of G1 whilst mitotic cell size remained constant between treatments. In conclusion, both OX and P do indeed stimulate growth and shorten the cell cycle in higher plants and at the cellular level are able to reverse large and small cell size phenotypes normally exhibited by WEE1 oe and Spcdc25 genotypes, respectively
