    Ranging behaviour of a juvenile Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus meridionalis) in South Africa revealed by GPS satellite telemetry

    A second-year Bearded Vulture was equipped with a GPS transmitter and located on average 10 times a day from 6 September 2007 to 22 June 2008. During this period, the individual ranged in an area of ca. 38,500 km2 across the mountainous regions of Lesotho and the north-eastern Cape province of South Africa, thus covering on average 66 km/day, mainly in areas covered by scrubland and herbaceous vegetation. Three different activity areas with a temporal overlap of locations within them were observed. The ranging behavior could be explained by two non-exclusive alternative hypotheses: food searching and territory exploration. The information provided here may serve to identify potential threats for the species, such as poisoning, collision with power lines, food scarcity and persecution.Terra Natura Foundation. P.     Rodilla flotante: Revisión retrospectiva de 24 casos

    Se realiza una evaluación retrospectiva de 24 pacientes tratados de fracturas ipsilaterales de fémur y tibia. Solo en 7 (29%) casos esta lesión no se acompañaba de otras lesiones asociadas. Los resultados se han evaluado según la escala modificada de Thorensen y cols. (1985). El tipo de fractura fue muy polimorfo. Se realizó tratamiento definitivo de ambos huesos en la urgencia en 5 casos, en 7 casos se hizo tratamiento definitivo en tibia y provisional del fémur, y en 12 casos el tratamiento de urgencias fue provisional para ambas fracturas. Los resultados finales fueron buenos en 16 casos (67%), regulares en 6 (25%) y malos en 2 (8%). La estancia media de estos pacientes disminuyó, cuando se hizo tratamiento definitivo en urgencias.A retrospective evaluation of 24 patients with "floating knee" was done. Only in 7 (29%) cases this lesion was not associated to other lesions. The results have been evaluated according to the modified scale of Thorensen et al. (1985). The fracture pattern was very variable. One stage surgical treatment was carried out in 5 cases, in 7 cases definitive treatment was applied to the tibia and provisionally to the femur, and in 12 cases the treatment made in the emergency was provisional for both fractures. The final results were good in 16 cases (67%), fair in 6 (25%) and bad in 2 (8%). The length of hospital stay decreased when definitive treatment was made at once

    Natural and human–mediated factors in the recovery and subsequent expansion of the Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio L

    Abstract. Instances of range contraction and population decline in bird species in Europe are more common than cases of recovery following decline. Here we report on the recovery and expansion processes of an endangered bird species in Europe, the purple swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio L., Rallidae), with special reference to the Iberian Peninsula, its main distribution area in Western Europe. After a drastic decline during the first half of the 20th century, which restricted its range to a few areas in southern Spain, the Iberian population has recovered. Currently, the species occurs in a range similar to the one it had at the beginning of the 20th century, and has even colonized new areas. These processes seem to be the result of both human-mediated (effective protection of the species and suitable habitats; success of reintroduction programs as expansion focuses of birds colonizing nearby and distant regions [>300 km] wetlands) and natural factors (inter-and intra-seasonal cycles of wet and dry years). Thus, we found a significant relationship between rainfall and bird abundance and productivity, suggesting that such inter-and intra-seasonal cycles may have significant effects on demographic parameters that could be related to the expansion process. Finally the species shows remarkable adaptability, as proven by data on breeding success in recently colonized areas and the ability to breed shortly after reintroduction. We hypothesize that saturation of breeding habitats in established areas, a reasonable habitat continuity and favorable environmental conditions, and protection have facilitated the dispersion of birds

    GMM-based classifiers for the automatic detection of obstructive sleep apnea

    The aim of automatic pathological voice detection systems is to serve as tools, to medical specialists, for a more objective, less invasive and improved diagnosis of diseases. In this respect, the gold standard for those system include the usage of a optimized representation of the spectral envelope, either based on cepstral coefficients from the mel-scaled Fourier spectral envelope (Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients) or from an all-pole estimation (Linear Prediction Coding Cepstral Coefficients) forcharacterization, and Gaussian Mixture Models for posterior classification. However, the study of recently proposed GMM-based classifiers as well as Nuisance mitigation techniques, such as those employed in speaker recognition, has not been widely considered inpathology detection labours. The present work aims at testing whether or not the employment of such speaker recognition tools might contribute to improve system performance in pathology detection systems, specifically in the automatic detection of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The testing procedure employs an Obstructive Sleep Apnea database, in conjunction with GMM-based classifiers looking for a better performance. The results show that an improved performance might be obtained by using such approach

    Agouti overexpression in a transgenic model regulates integrity, permeability and electrogenic amino acid transport in zebrafish intestine

    Overexpression of asip1 in transgenic zebrafish disrupts dorsoventral pigment pattern in addition to increasing food intake levels and linear growth. A higher feed intake is unnecessary in transgenic fish to enable larger and heavier growth. A plausible explanation may rely on the enhanced feeding efficiency mediated by improved nutrient absorption in transgenic animals. To test this hypothesis, wide scope transcriptomic techniques were used to elucidate the potential pathways involved in the enhanced nutrient absorption and intestinal epithelium permeability/integrity. In addition, the electrogenic capacity for amino acid transport was analysed. Transcriptomic analysis reveal that amino acid, monocarboxylates, ionic and vitamin transmembrane transporters were substantially modified. Enrichment analysis also revealed an inhibition of intestinal lipid metabolism and down-regulation of KEGG pathways related to membrane integrity suggesting augmented intestinal laxity that may enhance paracellular transport. Electrophysiological experiments carried out in Ussing chambers show that asip1 overexpression decrease membraned tissue resistance (Rt), indicating a modification of the intestinal barrier function in ASIP1 transgenic animals. Similarly, paracellular permeability was higher in transgenic zebrafish. Both the decrease in Rt and the increase in permeability point to an ASIP1-dependent decrease in the tissue barrier function. Electrogenic amino acid transport was also enhanced in transgenic animals providing strong indication that ASIP1 fish can extract more amino acids from their diet at similar feeding levels. Both transcriptomic and electrophysiological results suggest that asip1-overexpressing zebrafish display improved nutrient absorption and by extension a higher feed efficiency which explains enhanced growth in the absence of augmented food intake. The enhanced growth of ASIP1 zebrafish potentially mediated by improved nutrient uptake and feed efficiency suggests that the melanocortin system, specifically asip1 overexpression, is a potential target for the development of genetically engineered fish displaying improved performance and no differential lipid accumulation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Blunted Reducing Power Generation in Erythrocytes Contributes to Oxidative Stress in Prepubertal Obese Children with Insulin Resistance

    Childhood obesity, and specifically its metabolic complications, are related to deficient antioxidant capacity and oxidative stress. Erythrocytes are constantly exposed to multiple sources of oxidative stress; hence, they are equipped with powerful antioxidant mechanisms requiring permanent reducing power generation and turnover. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH) are two key enzymes on the pentose phosphate pathway. Both enzymes supply reducing power by generating NADPH, which is essential for maintaining the redox balance within the cell and the activity of other antioxidant enzymes. We hypothesized that obese children with insulin resistance would exhibit blunted G6PDH and 6PGDH activities, contributing to their erythrocytes' redox status imbalances. We studied 15 control and 24 obese prepubertal children, 12 of whom were insulin-resistant according to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). We analyzed erythroid malondialdehyde (MDA) and carbonyl group levels as oxidative stress markers. NADP+/NADPH and GSH/GSSG were measured to determine redox status, and NADPH production by both G6PDH and 6PGDH was assayed spectrophotometrically to characterize pentose phosphate pathway activity. Finally, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were also assessed. As expected, MDA and carbonyl groups levels were higher at baseline and along the OGTT in insulin-resistant children. Both redox indicators showed an imbalance in favor of the oxidized forms along the OGTT in the insulin-resistant obese group. Additionally, the NADPH synthesis, as well as GR activity, were decreased. H2O2 removing enzyme activities were depleted at baseline in both obese groups, although after sugar intake only metabolically healthy obese participants were able to maintain their catalase activity. No change was detected in SOD activity between groups. Our results show that obese children with insulin resistance present higher levels of oxidative damage, blunted capacity to generate reducing power, and hampered function of key NADPH-dependent antioxidant enzymes.This research was funded by Spanish Government through the Carlos III Health Institute (Sanitary Research Fund (FIS)), code PI18/01316.     Periprocedural and Short-Term Outcomes of Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation With the Sapien XT as Compared With the Edwards Sapien Valve

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to analyze the short-term outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation with the Edwards Sapien THV (ESV), compared with the Sapien XT THV (SXT) (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, California).BackgroundThe SXT has been recently commercialized in Europe, but there are no studies analyzing the efficacy and safety of SXT, compared with ESV.MethodsAll consecutive patients (n = 120) who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation in our center via the transfemoral approach with either ESV (n = 66) or SXT (n = 54). Valve Academic Research Consortium endpoints were used.ResultsMean age was 80 ± 8 years, and mean Logistic-European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation was 24.9 ± 17.0. The ilio-femoral artery minimal lumen diameter was smaller in patients treated with the SXT (7.27 ± 1.09 mm vs. 7.94 ± 1.08 mm, p = 0.002). Device success was high in both groups (96.3% vs. 92.4%, p = 0.45). Major vascular events were 3-fold lower in the SXT group (11.1% vs. 33.3%, relative risk: 0.40, 95% confidence interval: 0.28 to 0.57; p = 0.004). Life-threatening and major bleeding events were not significantly different between groups (18.5% vs. 27.3% and 35.2% vs. 40.9%, respectively). The SXT group had a lower 30-day Valve Academic Research Consortium combined safety endpoint (20.4% vs. 45.5%; relative risk: 0.44, 95% confidence interval: 0.24 to 0.80; p = 0.004). The 30-day mortality was 1.7% (n = 2). At 30 days, mean transaortic gradient was approximately 10 mm Hg in both groups and the aortic regurgitation was mild-to-moderate in 70.2% of SXT and 76.3% of ESV.ConclusionsThe new SXT valve has the same short-term performance as the ESV but seems to be associated with a lower risk of major vascular complications and thus has a broader clinical application

    Enhancing monitoring and transboundary collaboration for conserving migratory species under global change: The priority case of the red kite

    Calls for urgent action to conserve biodiversity under global change are increasing, and conservation of migratory species in this context poses special challenges. In the last two decades the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) has provided a framework for several subsidiary instruments including action plans for migratory bird species, but the effectiveness and transferability of these plans remain unclear. Such laws and policies have been credited with positive outcomes for the conservation of migratory species, but the lack of international coordination and on-ground implementation pose major challenges. While research on migratory populations has received growing attention, considerably less emphasis has been given to integrating ecological information throughout the annual cycle for examining strategies to conserve migratory species at multiple scales in the face of global change. We fill this gap through a case study examining the ecological status and conservation of a migratory raptor and facultative scavenger, the red kite (Milvus milvus), whose current breeding range is limited to Europe and is associated with agricultural landscapes and restricted to the temperate zone. Based on our review, conservation actions have been successful at recovering red kite populations within certain regions. Populations however remain depleted along the southern-most edge of the geographic range where many migratory red kites from northern strongholds overwinter. This led us to a forward-looking and integrated strategy that emphasizes international coordination involving researchers and conservation practitioners to enhance the science-policy-action interface. We identify and explore key issues for conserving the red kite under global change, including enhancing conservation actions within and outside protected areas, recovering depleted populations, accounting for climate change, and transboundary coordination in adaptive conservation and management actions.
