    Evaluation of Performance and Costs of Two Heifer Development Systems

    Early weaned (EW) heifers must be developed for a longer period of time usually resulting in increased development costs. Developing EW heifers on native range may reduce these costs. Dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) offers protein and energy that compliment native forages for developing heifers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance and costs of two heifer development systems in northwest South Dakota. Sixty-five nulliparous crossbred beef heifers were randomly allotted to one of two systems: 1) heifers (n=33) weaned at 132 d of age (461 lb) and developed on range with a DDGS supplement (1.8 to 6.4 lb/hd/d) from Sept. 25 to May 18 (Range); 2) heifers (n=32) weaned at 218 days of age (605 lb) and developed in a drylot with grass hay and a conventional supplement (2.6 to 3.6 lb/hd/d) from Dec. 2 to May 18 (Normal). Supplement levels were established to result in both groups of heifers reaching 65% of mature weight at breeding (863 lb). All heifers were managed similarly after May 18. Heifers were synchronized with a shot of PGF2α and bred natural service beginning June 14. As necessary for target weights to be reached, ADG through the feeding period was greater (P \u3c 0.05) for Range (1.68 lb/d) than (Normal 1.34 lb/d). Range heifers tended (P = 0.12) to be heavier on May 18 (859 and 830 lb, respectively) and were heavier (P \u3c 0.05) at breeding (915 and 834 lb, respectively). Weight differences in May were a result of higher than expected gains by the Range heifers in the spring. From May 18 to June 14, Range heifers gained more (P \u3c 0.05) than Normal (2.07 and 0.32 lb/d, respectively). Synchronized conception and overall pregnancy rates were similar (P \u3e 0.25) between the Range and Normal heifers (58% vs. 50% and 91% vs. 88%, respectively). Supplement and forage costs for the Range system was similar (122/hd)totheNormal(122/hd) to the Normal (117/hd). Range development provides an alternative method for developing early-weaned heifers that reduces daily costs

    Effect of Distillers Grains Composition and Level on Steers Consuming High-Quality Forage

    An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of dried distillers grains (DDG) supplementation level and composition on growing steer performance and forage intake. Factors included DDG supplementation level (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1.00% of BW), and DDG solubles level (0, 5.4, 14.5, 19.1, or 22.1% DM). Final BW improved, and forage intake decreased with increasing levels of DDG. An interaction between DDG supplementation level and solubles level was observed on ADG and F:G and was likely related to supplemental fat levels. Supplementation of forages with DDG improves performance while decreasing forage intake when fat levels are not too great

    Friendships and Family Support Reduce Subsequent Depressive Symptoms in At-Risk Adolescents.

    BACKGROUND: Early life stress (ELS) consists of child family adversities (CFA: negative experiences that happened within the family environment) and/or peer bullying. ELS plays an important role in the development of adolescent depressive symptoms and clinical disorders. Identifying factors that may reduce depressive symptoms in adolescents with ELS may have important public mental health implications. METHODS: We used structural equation modelling and examined the impact of adolescent friendships and/or family support at age 14 on depressive symptoms at age 17 in adolescents exposed to ELS before age 11. To this end, we used structural equation modelling in a community sample of 771 adolescents (322 boys and 477 girls) from a 3 year longitudinal study. Significant paths in the model were followed-up to test whether social support mediated or moderated the association between ELS and depressive symptoms at age 17. RESULTS: We found that adolescent social support in adolescence is negatively associated with subsequent depressive symptoms in boys and girls exposed to ELS. Specifically, we found evidence for two mediational pathways: In the first pathway family support mediated the link between CFA and depressive symptoms at age 17. Specifically, CFA was negatively associated with adolescent family support at age 14, which in turn was negatively associated with depressive symptoms at age 17. In the second pathway we found that adolescent friendships mediated the path between peer bullying and depressive symptoms. Specifically, relational bullying was negatively associated with adolescent friendships at age 14, which in turn were negatively associated with depressive symptoms at age 17. In contrast, we did not find a moderating effect of friendships and family support on the association between CFA and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Friendships and/or family support in adolescence mediate the relationship between ELS and late adolescent depressive symptoms in boys and girls. Therefore, enhancing affiliate relationships and positive family environments may benefit the mental health of vulnerable youth that have experienced CFA and/or primary school bullying.AlvH was supported by a Rubicon Fellowship from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.     The HIPASS Catalogue - II. Completeness, Reliability, and Parameter Accuracy

    The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind extragalactic HI 21-cm emission line survey covering the whole southern sky from declination -90 to +25. The HIPASS catalogue (HICAT), containing 4315 HI-selected galaxies from the region south of declination +2, is presented in Meyer et al. (2004a, Paper I). This paper describes in detail the completeness and reliability of HICAT, which are calculated from the recovery rate of synthetic sources and follow-up observations, respectively. HICAT is found to be 99 per cent complete at a peak flux of 84 mJy and an integrated flux of 9.4 Jy km/s. The overall reliability is 95 per cent, but rises to 99 per cent for sources with peak fluxes >58 mJy or integrated flux > 8.2 Jy km/s. Expressions are derived for the uncertainties on the most important HICAT parameters: peak flux, integrated flux, velocity width, and recessional velocity. The errors on HICAT parameters are dominated by the noise in the HIPASS data, rather than by the parametrization procedure.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 12 pages, 11 figures.     Generalized linear models for flexible parametric modeling of the hazard function

    Background: Parametric modelling of survival data is important and reimbursement decisions may depend on the selected distribution. Accurate predictions require sufficiently flexible models to describe adequately the temporal evolution of the hazard function. A rich class of models is available among the framework of generalised linear models (GLMs) and its extensions, but these models are rarely applied to survival data. This manuscript describes the theoretical properties of these more flexible models, and compares their performance to standard survival models in a reproducible case- study. Methods: We describe how survival data may be analysed with GLMs and its extensions: fractional polynomials, spline models, generalised additive models, generalised linear mixed (frailty) models and dynamic survival models. For each, we provide a comparison of the strengths and limitations of these approaches. For the case-study we compare within-sample fit, the plausibility of extrapolations and extrapolation performance based on data-splitting. Results: Viewing standard survival models as GLMs shows that many impose a restrictive assumption of linearity. For the case-study, GLMs provided better within-sample fit and more plausible extrapolations. However, they did not improve extrapolation performance. We also provide guidance to aid in choosing between the different approaches based on GLMs and its extensions. Conclusions: The use of GLMs for parametric survival analysis can out-perform standard parametric survival models, although the improvements were modest in our case-study. This approach is currently seldom used. We provide guidance on both implementing these models and choosing between them. The reproducible case-study will help to increase uptake of these models

    A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to constrain cosmological models and the physics of dark energy.Comment: 596 pages.     Clonal Haematopoiesis and Risk of Chronic Liver Disease

    Chronic liver disease is a major public health burden worldwide1. Although different aetiologies and mechanisms of liver injury exist, progression of chronic liver disease follows a common pathway of liver inflammation, injury and fibrosis2. Here we examined the association between clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) and chronic liver disease in 214,563 individuals from 4 independent cohorts with whole-exome sequencing data (Framingham Heart Study, Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, UK Biobank and Mass General Brigham Biobank). CHIP was associated with an increased risk of prevalent and incident chronic liver disease (odds ratio = 2.01, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) [1.46, 2.79]; P \u3c 0.001). Individuals with CHIP were more likely to demonstrate liver inflammation and fibrosis detectable by magnetic resonance imaging compared to those without CHIP (odds ratio = 1.74, 95% CI [1.16, 2.60]; P = 0.007). to assess potential causality, Mendelian randomization analyses showed that genetic predisposition to CHIP was associated with a greater risk of chronic liver disease (odds ratio = 2.37, 95% CI [1.57, 3.6]; P \u3c 0.001). In a dietary model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, mice transplanted with Tet2-deficient haematopoietic cells demonstrated more severe liver inflammation and fibrosis. These effects were mediated by the NLRP3 inflammasome and increased levels of expression of downstream inflammatory cytokines in Tet2-deficient macrophages. In summary, clonal haematopoiesis is associated with an elevated risk of liver inflammation and chronic liver disease progression through an aberrant inflammatory response
