Community School Museums as a tool for education

[EN] Community Schools Museums (COSMUS) is an initiative that has been developing an approach to school education from a perspective of multi-dimensional diversity, creativity and community involvement under the Erasmus+ programme in six different countries (Portugal, Greece, Italy, Romania, Poland and Turkey) and in different kinds of schools (arts, music, primary school, high school, VET).This initiative, relies on different educational and multicultural principles, such as the European Youth Charter on Inclusion and Diversity in Education or the European Education Area, and uses a combination of three dimensions that compose the new concept of Community School Museum. The first dimension refers to the local community in which each of the schools is located. This not only enhances concepts such as local traditions, society, or sense of belonging, but also connects with them and involves them in the school activity and curricula content. The second dimension is the school, where education curricula and physical space interact to support those types of knowledge that are essential to sustaining human development, using critical thinking, using creativity or cooperation to promote multicultural meanings. The third dimension is the museum, understood as a flexible tool acting as a communication channel (bi-directional), with elements that act as significance bearers. It uses the approach of learning by doing in order to learn to be, one of the four pillars of learning. It also employs the recommendations of the International Committee for Education and Cultural Action and applies the seven areas of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Results of the Community School Museum projects show a sound diversity of approaches, which points to the success of the methodology, given that diverse educational, social and cultural contexts give rise to diverse museum contents and designs. One of these results focuses on vernacular heritage.Alonso-Monasterio Fernández, P.; Uixera Cotano, L. (2022). Community School Museums as a tool for education.

In the last decade, factuality has undeniably been an area of growing interest in Natural Language Processing. This paper describes a rule-based tool to automatically identify the factual status of events in Spanish text, understood with respect to the degree of commitment with which a narrator presents situations. Factuality is represented compositionally, considering the following semantic categories: commitment, polarity, event structure, and time. In contrast with neural machine learning approaches, this tool is entirely based on manually created lexico-syntactic rules that systematize semantic and syntactic patterns of factuality. Thus, it is able to provide explanations for automatic decisions, which are very valuable to guarantee accountability of the system. We evaluate the performance of the system by comparison with a manually annotated Gold Standard, obtaining results that are comparable, if not better, to machine learning approaches for a related task, the FACT 2019 challenge at the IBERLEF evaluation forum.

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] The number of interconnected devices, such as personal wearables, cars, and smart-homes, surrounding us every day has recently increased. The Internet of Things devices monitor many processes, and have the capacity of using machine learning models for pattern recognition, and even making decisions, with the added advantage of diminishing network congestion by allowing computations near to the data sources. The main restriction is the low computation capacity of these devices. Thus, machine learning algorithms capable of maintaining accuracy while using mechanisms that exploit certain characteristics, such as low-precision versions, are needed. In this paper, low-precision mutual information-based feature selection algorithms are employed over DNA microarray datasets, showing that 16-bit and some times even 8-bit representations of these algorithms can be used without significant variations in the final classification results achieved. This work has been supported by the grant Machine Learning on the Edge - Ayudas Fundación BBVA a Equipos de Investigación Científica 2019. Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG[Abstract] The task of choosing the appropriate classifier for a given scenario is not an easy-to-solve question. First, there is an increasingly high number of algorithms available belonging to different families. And also there is a lack of methodologies that can help on recommending in advance a given family of algorithms for a certain type of datasets. Besides, most of these classification algorithms exhibit a degradation in the performance when faced with datasets containing irrelevant and/or redundant features. In this work we analyze the impact of feature selection in classification over several synthetic and real datasets. The experimental results obtained show that the significance of selecting a classifier decreases after applying an appropriate preprocessing step and, not only this alleviates the choice, but it also improves the results in almost all the datasets tested. This work has been supported by the National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation of the Spanish Government (Grant PID2019-109238 GB-C2), and by the Xunta de Galicia (Grant ED431C 2018/34) with the European Union ERDF funds. Gender differences in psychiatric disorders and drug use are well known. Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug among young people. In recent years, its use has been related to the development of psychiatric pathologies; however, few studies have incorporated the gender perspective as of yet. The present work analyses the literature to determine the existence of gender differences in the development of psychotic, depressive and anxious symptoms associated with cannabis use. First, we describe cannabis misuse and its consequences, paying special attention to adolescent subjects. Second, the main gender differences in psychiatric disorders, such as psychosis, depression, anxiety and cannabis use disorders, are enumerated. Subsequently, we discuss the studies that have evaluated gender differences in the association between cannabis use and the appearance of psychotic, depressive and anxious symptoms; moreover, we consider the possible explanations for the identified gender differences. In conclusion, the studies referred to in this review reveal the existence of gender differences in psychiatric symptoms associated with cannabis use, although the direction of such differences is not always clear. Future research is necessary to discern the causal relationship between cannabis use and the development of psychiatric symptoms, as well as the gender differences foun

IntroductionSexism, lack of sexual freedom, and negative attitudes towards minorities are related to risky and discriminatory sexual behaviors. To date, no cross-cultural comparisons have been made regarding these sexual behaviors and attitudes. The study also explores the sexuality competencies of young adults undertaking vocational courses in higher education before their transition to professional practice.MethodsThe sample comprised 1235 university students (670 Spanish and 565 British) aged between 18 and 52 years (M = 22.06, SD = 4.38). During the years 2020 and 2021, respondents completed a survey structured in six standardized scales (HPSC, DSS, SOS, HATH, EANT, and TIBS).ResultsResults report that British students show less gender adherence (DSS) while the Spanish ones show more positive attitudes towards trans individuals (EANT) and pleasure (SOS). These findings indicate that students in this research engage in more sexual risk behaviors (HPSC), display similar rigid gender adherences (DSS), and more positive erotophilic (SOS), homophilic (HATH), and trans-friendly attitudes (EANT and TIBS) than those in previous studies. There were, however, significant differences by gender, religion, and program of study.ConclusionsThe research demonstrates the relevance of measuring cultural factors related to sexual behaviors and attitudes in youth and reflects a lack of attention to these issues in educational and healthcare settings. This is despite its broad impact on people’s health, as young people are more likely to display increased risky sexual behaviors.Policy ImplicationsThese findings emphasize the importance of the development of updated strategies in sex education among young people. The added importance of doing so with students in higher education who are likely to enter professions where they will educate or influence others on these matters is identified
