    Search for jet extinction in the inclusive jet-pT spectrum from proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published articles title, journal citation, and DOI.The first search at the LHC for the extinction of QCD jet production is presented, using data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.7  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The extinction model studied in this analysis is motivated by the search for signatures of strong gravity at the TeV scale (terascale gravity) and assumes the existence of string couplings in the strong-coupling limit. In this limit, the string model predicts the suppression of all high-transverse-momentum standard model processes, including jet production, beyond a certain energy scale. To test this prediction, the measured transverse-momentum spectrum is compared to the theoretical prediction of the standard model. No significant deficit of events is found at high transverse momentum. A 95% confidence level lower limit of 3.3 TeV is set on the extinction mass scale

    Searches for electroweak neutralino and chargino production in channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons in pp collisions at 8 TeV

    Searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) are presented based on the electroweak pair production of neutralinos and charginos, leading to decay channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons and undetected lightest SUSY particles (LSPs). The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 19.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected in 2012 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The main emphasis is neutralino pair production in which each neutralino decays either to a Higgs boson (h) and an LSP or to a Z boson and an LSP, leading to hh, hZ, and ZZ states with missing transverse energy (E-T(miss)). A second aspect is chargino-neutralino pair production, leading to hW states with E-T(miss). The decays of a Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair, to a photon pair, and to final states with leptons are considered in conjunction with hadronic and leptonic decay modes of the Z and W bosons. No evidence is found for supersymmetric particles, and 95% confidence level upper limits are evaluated for the respective pair production cross sections and for neutralino and chargino mass values

    The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of n-hexane, methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and water extracts of Tripleurospermum parviflorum (Willd.) Pobed. were evaluated in this study. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were reported against Escherichia coli ATCC 29998, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Escherichia coli ATCC 11230, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538P, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterobacter cloacae ATCC 13047, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Pseudomonas aeroginosa ATCC 27853 as bacteria and Candida albicans ATCC 10239 as yeastlike fungi by disc diffusion method. Cytotoxic activity of the extracts was tested in vitro against Brine shrimp. All of the extracts showed a range of activity against the tested bacteria and brine shrimp

    In Turkish traditional medicine, Tripleurospermum species have been used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory potential and fatty acid composition of the extracts prepared from Tripleurospermum parviflorum (Willd.) Pobed. and T. tenuifolium (Kit.). Anti-inflammatory activity was assessed by using carrageenan-, and serotonin- induced hind paw edema and acetic acid-induced increase in capillary permeability models. The fatty acid compositions of the plants were investigated by gas chromatography (GC). EtOAc extracts of T. tenuifolium and T. parviflorum exerted notable inhibitory effect in the all in vivo anti-inflammatory activity models tested. Generally, C 16:0 palmitic acid and C 18:2 linoleic acid were found to be the major fatty acids in two species. Saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were found in higher amounts than monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in two species. SFAs were determinated at 63.15% and 58.68% in T. tenuifolium and T. parviflorum, respectively. The high content of linoleic acid and palmitic acid may be primarily responsible for significant anti-inflammatory activity. The present study confirms the anti-inflammatory activity of T. parviflorum and T. tenuifolium. Further phytochemical and biological activity studies are needed for the determination of the active principle/s and anti-inflammatory activity mechanism. © 2015 ACG Publications.     Brine shrimp lethality bioassay of some Verbascum species growing in Turkey

    Verbascum L. (Scrophulariaceae) species are medicinal plants that have been used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, asthma, spasmodic coughs and other pulmonary problems in Anatolia and in several countries. The objective of this study was to assess the in vivo cytotoxic activities of thirteen Verbascum extracts including V. chionophyllum Hub.-Mor., V. cilicicum Boiss., V. dudleyanum (Hub.-Mor.) Hub.-Mor., V. lasianthum Boiss., V. latisepalum Hub.-Mor., V. mucronatum Lam., V. olympicum Boiss., V. pterocalycinum var. mutense Hub.-Mor., V. pycnostachyum Boiss. & Heldr., V. salviifolium Boiss., V. splendidum Boiss., V. stachydifolium Boiss. & Heldr and V. uschackense (Murb.) Hub.-Mor. using brine shrimp (Artemia salina) lethality bioassay. The methanolic extracts of V. chionophyllum flowers and leaves, V. cilicicum flowers, V. lasianthum flowers, V. mucronatum flowers, V. pycnostachyum flowers and V. splendidum flowers showed the highest inhibitory activities against the brine shrimp. On the other hand, the rest of the species did not show any remarkable cytotoxic activity
