Through thick or thin: Multiple components of the magneto-ionic medium towards the nearby region Sharpless 2-27 revealed by Faraday tomography
Sharpless 2-27 (Sh2-27) is a nearby region excited by
Oph. We present observations of polarized radio emission from 300 to
480MHz towards Sh2-27, made with the Parkes 64m Radio Telescope as part
of the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey. These observations have an angular
resolution of , and the data are uniquely sensitive to
magneto-ionic structure on large angular scales. We demonstrate that background
polarized emission towards Sh2-27 is totally depolarized in our observations,
allowing us to investigate the foreground. We analyse the results of Faraday
tomography, mapping the magnetised interstellar medium along the 165pc path
to Sh2-27. The Faraday dispersion function in this direction has peaks at three
Faraday depths. We consider both Faraday thick and thin models for this
observation, finding that the thin model is preferred. We further model this as
Faraday rotation of diffuse synchrotron emission in the Local Bubble and in two
foreground neutral clouds. The Local Bubble extends for 80pc in this
direction, and we find a Faraday depth of radm. This
indicates a field directed away from the Sun with a strength of
G. The near and far neutral clouds are each about 30pc
thick, and we find Faraday depths of radm and
radm, respectively. We estimate that the
line-of-sight magnetic strengths in the near and far cloud are and . Our results demonstrate that Faraday tomography can be used
to investigate the magneto-ionic properties of foreground features in front of

A Search for Radio Emission from Supernovae With Ages from About One Week to More Than 80 Years
We report VLA radio observations of 29 SNe with ages ranging from 10 days to
about 90 years past explosion. These observations significantly contribute to
the existing data pool on such objects. Included are detections of known radio
SNe~1950B, 1957D, 1970G, 1983N, the suspected radio SN 1923A, and the possible
radio SN 1961V. None of the remaining 23 observations resulted in detections,
providing further evidence to support the observed trend that most SNe are not
detectable radio emitters. To investigate the apparent lack of radio emission
from the SNe reported here, we have followed standard practice and used
Chevalier's ``standard model'' to derive (upper limits to) the mass-loss rates
for the super nova progenitors. These upper limits to the fluxes are consistent
with a lack of circumstellar material needed to provide detectable radio
emission for SNe at these ages and distances. Comparison of the radio
luminosities of these supernovae as a function of age past explosion to other
well-observed radio SNe indicates that the Type II SNe upper limits are more
consistent with the extrapolated light curves of SN 1980K than of SN 1979C,
suggesting that SN 1980K may be a more typical radio emitter than SN 1979C. For
completeness, we have included an appendix where the results of analyses of the
non-SN radio sources are presented. Where possible, we make (tentative)

The Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS): The brightest polarized region in the Southern sky at 75cm and its implications for Radio Loop II
Using the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS) Low-Band South (LBS)
southern sky polarization survey, covering 300 to 480 MHz at 81 arcmin
resolution, we reveal the brightest region in the Southern polarized sky at
these frequencies. The region, G150-50, covers nearly 20deg, near
(l,b)~(150 deg,-50 deg). Using GMIMS-LBS and complementary data at higher
frequencies (~0.6--30 GHz), we apply Faraday tomography and Stokes QU-fitting
techniques. We find that the magnetic field associated with G150-50 is both
coherent and primarily in the plane of the sky, and indications that the region
is associated with Radio Loop II. The Faraday depth spectra across G150-50 are
broad and contain a large-scale spatial gradient. We model the magnetic field
in the region as an expanding shell, and we can reproduce both the observed
Faraday rotation and the synchrotron emission in the GMIMS-LBS band. Using
QU-fitting, we find that the Faraday spectra are produced by several Faraday
dispersive sources along the line-of-sight. Alternatively, polarization horizon
effects that we cannot model are adding complexity to the high-frequency
polarized spectra. The magnetic field structure of Loop II dominates a large
fraction of the sky, and studies of the large-scale polarized sky will need to
account for this object. Studies of G150-50 with high angular resolution could
mitigate polarization horizon effects, and clarify the nature of G150-50.Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
QTL mapping in autotetraploids using SNP dosage information
Dense linkage maps derived by analysing SNP dosage in autotetraploids provide detailed information about the location of, and genetic model at, quantitative trait loci. Recent developments in sequencing and genotyping technologies enable researchers to generate high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype data for mapping studies. For polyploid species, the SNP genotypes are informative about allele dosage, and Hackett et al. (PLoS ONE 8:e63939, 2013) presented theory about how dosage information can be used in linkage map construction and quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping for an F1 population in an autotetraploid species. Here, QTL mapping using dosage information is explored for simulated phenotypic traits of moderate heritability and possibly non-additive effects. Different mapping strategies are compared, looking at additive and more complicated models, and model fitting as a single step or by iteratively re-weighted modelling. We recommend fitting an additive model without iterative re-weighting, and then exploring non-additive models for the genotype means estimated at the most likely position. We apply this strategy to re-analyse traits of high heritability from a potato population of 190 F1 individuals: flower colour, maturity, height and resistance to late blight (Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary) and potato cyst nematode (Globodera pallida), using a map of 3839 SNPs. The approximate confidence intervals for QTL locations have been improved by the detailed linkage map, and more information about the genetic model at each QTL has been revealed. For several of the reported QTLs, candidate SNPs can be identified, and used to propose candidate trait genes. We conclude that the high marker density is informative about the genetic model at loci of large effects, but that larger populations are needed to detect smaller QTLs
Portacaval shunt causes apoptosis and liver atrophy in rats despite increases in endogenous levels of major hepatic growth factors
Background/Aims: The response to the liver damage caused by portacaval shunt (PCS) is characterized by low-grade hyperplasia and atrophy. To clarify mechanisms of this dissociation, we correlated the expression of 'hepatotrophic factors' and the antihepatotrophic and proapoptotic peptide, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, with the pathologic changes caused by PCS in rats. Methods: PCS was created by side-to-side anastomosis between the portal vein and inferior vena cava, with ligation of the hilar portal vein. Hepatic growth mediators were measured to 2 months. Results: The decrease in the liver/body weight ratio during the first 7 days which stabilized by day 15, corresponded to parenchymal cell apoptosis and increases in hepatic TGF-β concentration that peaked at 1.4 × baseline at 15 days before returning to control levels by day 30. Variable increases in the concentrations of growth promoters (hepatocyte growth factor, TGF-α and augmenter of liver regeneration) also occurred during the period of hepatocellular apoptosis. Conclusions: The development of hepatic atrophy was associated with changes in TGF-β concentration, and occurred despite increased expression of multiple putative growth promoters. The findings suggest that apoptosis set in motion by TGF-β constrains the amount of hepatocyte proliferation independently from control of liver volume. © 2002 European Association for the Study of the Liver. Impact of gene variants on sex-specific regulation of human Scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-BI) expression in liver and association with lipid levels in a population-based study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several studies have noted that genetic variants of <it>SCARB1</it>, a lipoprotein receptor involved in reverse cholesterol transport, are associated with serum lipid levels in a sex-dependent fashion. However, the mechanism underlying this gene by sex interaction has not been explored.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We utilized both epidemiological and molecular methods to study how estrogen and gene variants interact to influence <it>SCARB1 </it>expression and lipid levels. Interaction between 35 <it>SCARB1 </it>haplotype-tagged polymorphisms and endogenous estradiol levels was assessed in 498 postmenopausal Caucasian women from the population-based Rancho Bernardo Study. We further examined associated variants with overall and <it>SCARB1 </it>splice variant (SR-BI and SR-BII) expression in 91 human liver tissues using quantitative real-time PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Several variants on a haplotype block spanning intron 11 to intron 12 of <it>SCARB1 </it>showed significant gene by estradiol interaction affecting serum lipid levels, the strongest for rs838895 with HDL-cholesterol (p = 9.2 × 10<sup>-4</sup>) and triglycerides (p = 1.3 × 10<sup>-3</sup>) and the triglyceride:HDL cholesterol ratio (p = 2.7 × 10<sup>-4</sup>). These same variants were associated with expression of the SR-BI isoform in a sex-specific fashion, with the strongest association found among liver tissue from 52 young women <45 years old (p = 0.002).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Estrogen and <it>SCARB1 </it>genotype may act synergistically to regulate expression of <it>SCARB1 </it>isoforms and impact serum levels of HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. This work highlights the importance of considering sex-dependent effects of gene variants on serum lipid levels.</p
Herbivory by a Phloem-Feeding Insect Inhibits Floral Volatile Production
There is extensive knowledge on the effects of insect herbivory on volatile emission from vegetative tissue, but little is known about its impact on floral volatiles. We show that herbivory by phloem-feeding aphids inhibits floral volatile emission in white mustard Sinapis alba measured by gas chromatographic analysis of headspace volatiles. The effect of the Brassica specialist aphid Lipaphis erysimi was stronger than the generalist aphid Myzus persicae and feeding by chewing larvae of the moth Plutella xylostella caused no reduction in floral volatile emission. Field observations showed no effect of L. erysimi-mediated floral volatile emission on the total number of flower visits by pollinators. Olfactory bioassays suggested that although two aphid natural enemies could detect aphid inhibition of floral volatiles, their olfactory orientation to infested plants was not disrupted. This is the first demonstration that phloem-feeding herbivory can affect floral volatile emission, and that the outcome of interaction between herbivory and floral chemistry may differ depending on the herbivore's feeding mode and degree of specialisation. The findings provide new insights into interactions between insect herbivores and plant chemistry
Multifaceted highly targeted sequential multidrug treatment of early ambulatory high-risk SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19)
The SARS-CoV-2 virus spreading across the world has led to surges of COVID-19 illness, hospitalizations, and
death. The complex and multifaceted pathophysiology of life-threatening COVID-19 illness including viral mediated
organ damage, cytokine storm, and thrombosis warrants early interventions to address all components of the devastating
illness. In countries where therapeutic nihilism is prevalent, patients endure escalating symptoms and without
early treatment can succumb to delayed in-hospital
care and death. Prompt early initiation of sequenced multidrug
therapy (SMDT) is a widely and currently available
solution to stem the tide of hospitalizations and death. A
multipronged therapeutic approach includes 1) adjuvant
nutraceuticals, 2) combination intracellular anti-infective
therapy, 3) inhaled/oral corticosteroids, 4) antiplatelet
agents/anticoagulants, 5) supportive care including supplemental
oxygen, monitoring, and telemedicine. Randomized
trials of individual, novel oral therapies have not
delivered tools for physicians to combat the pandemic in
practice. No single therapeutic option thus far has been
entirely effective and therefore a combination is required
at this time. An urgent immediate pivot from single drug to
SMDT regimens should be employed as a critical strategy
to deal with the large numbers of acute COVID-19 patients
with the aim of reducing the intensity and duration
of symptoms and avoiding hospitalization and death
Angular distributions in the decay B -> K*l(+)l(-)
We use a sample of 384 million BBbar events collected with the Babar detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider to study angular distributions in the rare decays B -> K* l+l-, where l+l- is either e+e- or mu+mu-. For low dilepton invariant masses, m(l+l-)3.2$ GeV/c^2, we measure AFB=0.76 (+0.52,-0.32) +/- 0.07 FL=0.71 (+0.20,-0.22) +/- 0.04.We are grateful for the excellent luminosity and machine
conditions provided by our PEP-II colleagues, and
