    Effects of adjunctive eslicarbazepine acetate on serum lipids in patients with partial-onset seizures: Impact of concomitant statins and enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs.

    PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) on lipid metabolism and to determine whether reduced statin exposure during ESL therapy has clinical consequences. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We conducted a post-hoc analysis of pooled data for serum lipids (laboratory values) from three phase III, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of adjunctive ESL therapy (400, 800, or 1200 mg once daily) in patients with treatment-refractory partial-onset seizures. Changes from baseline in serum lipid levels were analyzed according to use of statins and/or enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs (EIAEDs) during the baseline period. KEY FINDINGS: In total, 426 and 1021 placebo- and ESL-treated patients, respectively, were included in the analysis. With regard to the changes from baseline in serum concentrations, there were statistically significant differences between the placebo and ESL 1200 mg QD groups, for both total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), but the effect sizes were small (+4.1 mg/dL and +1.8 mg/dL, respectively). A small but significant difference in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; -5.0 mg/dL) was observed between the ESL 400 mg QD group and the placebo group. In patients not taking a concomitant EIAED, there were no changes with ESL 400 mg QD, but modest and statistically significant increases in cholesterol fractions (TC, LDL-C and HDL-C) with ESL 800 mg QD (/dL) and ESL 1200 mg QD (/dL). ESL had no consistent effect on lipids in patients taking a concomitant EIAED. In patients taking statins during baseline, there were no clinically relevant changes in serum lipids during use of ESL, although the subgroups were small. SIGNIFICANCE: These results suggest that ESL does not appear to have clinically significant effects on serum lipids, nor does the pharmacokinetic interaction between ESL and statins have an impact on serum lipid concentrations

    A New Measure of Binge Drinking: Prevalence and Correlates in a Probability Sample of Undergraduates

    A standard measure defines binge drinking as the consumption of 5 or more drinks in a row for men (4 or more drinks for women) on at least 1 occasion during the past 2 weeks. A revised operational definition of binge drinking was developed by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in 2004 and incorporated the duration of the drinking episode in addition to the quantity of alcohol consumed. This study compares the standard and new binge measures for overall and subgroup prevalence rates; associations with gender, race/ethnicity, and age of drinking onset; and associations with negative drinking consequences. Methods : A probability sample of 4,580 randomly selected college students (50.3% female, M age=19.9, SD =2.0) at a large Midwestern university in the United States completed a Web-based survey of alcohol and other drug use. Participants reported on past 2-week binge drinking using the standard measure and past-year binge drinking using the new measure. Results : The longer past-year time frame of the new measure yielded a higher prevalence estimate of binge drinking (63.6%) compared with the 2-week standard measure (53.2%). Approximately 9.9% of those who were classified as binge drinkers using the 2-week standard measure were classified as non–binge drinkers using the new measure specification of a 2-hour duration for the drinking episode. The past-year new binge measure was positively associated with negative drinking consequences even when the 2-week measure was statistically controlled. Conclusions : Using a longer time frame and incorporating the duration of the drinking episode, the new measure of binge drinking appears to capture an important element of risky alcohol involvement in college students that is not fully assessed by the standard measure.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65718/1/j.1530-0277.2006.00234.x.pd

    On merger bias and the clustering of quasars

    We use the large catalogues of haloes available for the Millennium Simulation to test whether recently merged haloes exhibit stronger large-scale clustering than other haloes of the same mass. This effect could help to understand the very strong clustering of quasars at high redshift. However, we find no statistically significant excess bias for recently merged haloes over the redshift range 2 < z < 5, with the most massive haloes showing an excess of at most ~5%. We also consider galaxies extracted from a semianalytic model built on the Millennium Simulation. At fixed stellar mass, we find an excess bias of ~ 20-30% for recently merged objects, decreasing with increasing stellar mass. The fact that recently-merged galaxies are found in systematically more massive haloes than other galaxies of the same stellar mass accounts for about half of this signal, and perhaps more for high-mass galaxies. The weak merger bias of massive systems suggests that objects of merger-driven nature, such as quasars, do not cluster significantly differently than other objects of the same characteristic mass. We discuss the implications of these results for the interpretation of clustering data with respect to quasar duty cycles, visibility times, and evolution in the black hole-host mass relation.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures.     Study of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy from the DART CaII triplet survey

    We use VLT/FLAMES intermediate resolution (R~6500) spectra of individual red giant branch stars in the near-infrared CaII triplet (CaT) region to investigate the wide-area metallicity properties and internal kinematics of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph). Our final sample consists of 174 probable members of Sextans with accurate line-of-sight velocities (+- 2 km/s) and CaT [Fe/H] measurements (+- 0.2 dex). We use the MgI line at 8806.8 \AA\, as an empirical discriminator for distinguishing between probable members of the dSph (giant stars) and probable Galactic contaminants (dwarf stars). Sextans shows a similar chemo-dynamical behaviour to other Milky Way dSphs, with its central regions being more metal rich than the outer parts and with the more metal-rich stars displaying colder kinematics than the more metal-poor stars. Hints of a velocity gradient are found along the projected major axis and along an axis at P.A.=191 deg, however a larger and more spatially extended sample may be necessary to pin down the amplitude and direction of this gradient. We detect a cold kinematic substructure at the centre of Sextans, consistent with being the remnant of a disrupted very metal poor stellar cluster. We derive the most extended line-of-sight velocity dispersion profile for Sextans, out to a projected radius of 1.6 deg. From Jeans modelling of the observed line-of-sight velocity dispersion profile we find that this is consistent with both a cored dark matter halo with large core radius and cuspy halo with low concentration. The mass within the last measured point is in the range 2-4 x 10^8 M_sun, giving very large mass-to-light ratios, from 460 to 920 (M/L)_(V,sun).Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures; 4 tables.     Orientation bias of optically selected galaxy clusters and its impact on stacked weak-lensing analyses

    Weak-lensing measurements of the averaged shear profiles of galaxy clusters binned by some proxy for cluster mass are commonly converted to cluster mass estimates under the assumption that these cluster stacks have spherical symmetry. In this paper, we test whether this assumption holds for optically selected clusters binned by estimated optical richness. Using mock catalogues created from N-body simulations populated realistically with galaxies, we ran a suite of optical cluster finders and estimated their optical richness. We binned galaxy clusters by true cluster mass and estimated optical richness and measure the ellipticity of these stacks. We find that the processes of optical cluster selection and richness estimation are biased, leading to stacked structures that are elongated along the line of sight. We show that weak-lensing alone cannot measure the size of this orientation bias. Weak-lensing masses of stacked optically selected clusters are overestimated by up to 3–6 per cent when clusters can be uniquely associated with haloes. This effect is large enough to lead to significant biases in the cosmological parameters derived from large surveys like the Dark Energy Survey, if not calibrated via simulations or fitted simultaneously. This bias probably also contributes to the observed discrepancy between the observed and predicted Sunyaev–Zel’dovich signal of optically selected clusters

    Changes in undergraduate student alcohol consumption as they progress through university

    BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol use amongst university students is a major public health concern. Although previous studies suggest a raised level of consumption amongst the UK student population there is little consistent information available about the pattern of alcohol consumption as they progress through university. The aim of the current research was to describe drinking patterns of UK full-time undergraduate students as they progress through their degree course. METHOD: Data were collected over three years from 5895 undergraduate students who began their studies in either 2000 or 2001. Longitudinal data (i.e. Years 1–3) were available from 225 students. The remaining 5670 students all responded to at least one of the three surveys (Year 1 n = 2843; Year 2 n = 2219; Year 3 n = 1805). Results: Students reported consuming significantly more units of alcohol per week at Year 1 than at Years 2 or 3 of their degree. Male students reported a higher consumption of units of alcohol than their female peers. When alcohol intake was classified using the Royal College of Physicians guidelines [1] there was no difference between male and females students in terms of the percentage exceeding recommended limits. Compared to those who were low level consumers students who reported drinking above low levels at Year 1 had at least 10 times the odds of continuing to consume above low levels at year 3. Students who reported higher levels of drinking were more likely to report that alcohol had a negative impact on their studies, finances and physical health. Consistent with the reduction in units over time students reported lower levels of negative impact during Year 3 when compared to Year 1. CONCLUSION: The current findings suggest that student alcohol consumption declines over their undergraduate studies; however weekly levels of consumption at Year 3 remain high for a substantial number of students. The persistence of high levels of consumption in a large population of students suggests the need for effective preventative and treatment interventions for all year groups

    Relatório Final de Estágio apresentado à Escola Superior de Dança, com vista à obtenção do grau de Mestre em Ensino de DançaA disciplina de Composição Coreográfica, como opção curricular, encontra-se inserida na disciplina de Práticas Complementares de Dança nos terceiros e quartos anos do currículo do Curso Básico de Dança. Juntamente com a disciplina de Expressão Criativa, nos primeiros dois anos, é desenvolvido um trabalho do foro criativo no Curso Básico de Dança ao longo dos quatro primeiros anos de formação. No contexto da Escola Vocacional de Dança Das Caldas da Rainha, esta adota, a Composição Coreográfica como disciplina inserida nas de Práticas Complementares de Dança, reforçando, desta forma, a importância que a Composição possui no plano de formação do aluno de dança. Deste modo, considera-se que a Composição Coreográfica, enquanto disciplina de carácter criativo, surge como uma plataforma de sustentação e desenvolvimento de um pensamento sobre o ato de dançar e que esse pensamento é um elemento fulcral no processo de ensino-aprendizagem da dança. Como referido por diversos autores, esta disciplina implica uma reflexão, experimentação e apresentação de uma determinada forma de dança. Onde, associada a esta, estão a Criação Coreográfica Contemporânea com uma multiplicidade de Métodos e Processos Coreográficos e as Ferramentas de Composição singulares e profundamente autorais. Num outro espetro, no que respeita às disciplinas de caráter técnico, nomeadamente a Técnica de Dança Contemporânea, configura-se como uma disciplina transversal ao longo dos cinco anos do curso. Ressalva-se, assim, que a Dança Contemporânea possui uma miríade de formas plurais e abordagens de carácter singular, como sugerem diversos autores. Deste modo, esta apresenta-se como uma plataforma de desenvolvimento de um trabalho contínuo e sinérgico dentro do Curso Básico de Dança. Ou seja, que possa ser capaz de incorporar elementos de outras disciplinas, saberes e influências que se justifiquem na formação integral do aluno ao longo da formação, nomeadamente de aspetos criativos. O presente Relatório Final de Estágio descreve um processo de investigação-ação em torno de questões transdisciplinares da Composição e da Dança Contemporânea. O objetivo é sublinhar a importância da Composição Coreográfica no currículo do Curso Básico de Dança e propor possibilidades de esta integrar e contribuir para o desenvolvimento técnico, artístico e criativo na esfera da disciplina de Técnica de Dança Contemporânea no contexto do 4º ano do ano letivo 2016/17 na Escola Vocacional de Dança das Caldas da Rainha.ABSTRACT - The Choreographic Composition, as a curricular option, is included in the Complementary Practices of Dance in the third and fourth years on the curriculum of the Basic Dance Course. Together with Creative Expression this pair of disciplines ensures the creative work in dance in the context of the Basic Dance Course throughout the first four years of formation. Escola Vocacional de Dança das Caldas da Rainha adopts, within the scope of the Complementary Practices of Dance, the Choreographic Composition as discipline reinforcing its importance in the curriculum for the dance student. In this way, it is considered that Choreographic Composition, as a creative approach, appears as a platform for sustaining and developing a reflection about the act of dancing, where this process of thinking is essential in the development of the dance student. It is mentioned, by several authors, that this discipline implies reflection, experimentation and presentation of a certain form of dance. Related with Choreographic Composition, emerges the Contemporary Choreographic Creation with a multiplicity of Singular Choreographic Methods and Processes and Composition Tools. In another spectrum, regarding to technical subjects, the Contemporary Dance Technique is a discipline throughout the five years of the course. In this way, it is suggested that this discipline has a myriad of forms and approaches, as suggested by several authors. In this way, it can be a platform for developing a continuous and synergistic work within the Basic Dance Course. Where it is able to incorporate elements of other disciplines, knowledge and influences that justifies in the development of the student throughout the full formation in terms of creative and technique work. This Final Report aims to emphasize the importance of Choreographic Composition in the curriculum of the Basic Dance Course and to propose the possibility of contributing to the technical, artistic and creative development in the sphere of the discipline of Contemporary Dance Technique in the context of the fourth-year class of 2016/17 at Escola Vocacional de Dança das Caldas da Rainha.N/

    Standardized Assessment of Hereditary Ataxia Patients in Clinical Studies.

    BACKGROUND: Hereditary ataxias are a heterogeneous group of degenerative diseases of the cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord. They may present with isolated ataxia or with additional symptoms going beyond cerebellar deficits. There are an increasing number of clinical studies with the goal to define the natural history of these disorders, develop biomarkers, and investigate therapeutic interventions. Especially, early and preclinical disease stages are currently of particular interest. METHODS AND RESULTS: Evidence-based, we review standards for sampling and storage of biomaterials, clinical and neuropsychological assessment, as well as neurophysiology and neuroimaging and recommendations for standardized assessment of ataxia patients in multicenter studies. CONCLUSIONS: DNA, RNA, serum, and, if possible, cerebrospinal fluid samples should be processed following established standards. Clinical assessment in ataxia studies must include use of a validated clinical ataxia scale. There are several validated clinical ataxia scales available. There are no instruments that were specifically designed for assessing neuropsychological and psychiatric symptoms in ataxia disorders. We provide a list of tests that may prove valuable. Quantitative performance tests have the potential to supplement clinical scales. They provide additional objective and quantitative information. Posturography and quantitative movement analysis-despite valid approaches-require standardization before implemented in multicenter studies. Standardization of neurophysiological tools, as required for multicenter interventional trials, is still lacking. Future multicenter neuroimaging studies in ataxias should implement quality assurance measures as defined by the ADNI or other consortia. MRI protocols should allow morphometric analyses

    Predicting mental imagery based BCI performance from personality, cognitive profile and neurophysiological patterns

    Mental-Imagery based Brain-Computer Interfaces (MI-BCIs) allow their users to send commands to a computer using their brain-activity alone (typically measured by ElectroEncephaloGraphy— EEG), which is processed while they perform specific mental tasks. While very promising, MI-BCIs remain barely used outside laboratories because of the difficulty encountered by users to control them. Indeed, although some users obtain good control performances after training, a substantial proportion remains unable to reliably control an MI-BCI. This huge variability in user-performance led the community to look for predictors of MI-BCI control ability. However, these predictors were only explored for motor-imagery based BCIs, and mostly for a single training session per subject. In this study, 18 participants were instructed to learn to control an EEG-based MI-BCI by performing 3 MI-tasks, 2 of which were non-motor tasks, across 6 training sessions, on 6 different days. Relationships between the participants’ BCI control performances and their personality, cognitive profile and neurophysiological markers were explored. While no relevant relationships with neurophysiological markers were found, strong correlations between MI-BCI performances and mental-rotation scores (reflecting spatial abilities) were revealed. Also, a predictive model of MI-BCI performance based on psychometric questionnaire scores was proposed. A leave-one-subject-out cross validation process revealed the stability and reliability of this model: it enabled to predict participants’ performance with a mean error of less than 3 points. This study determined how users’ profiles impact their MI-BCI control ability and thus clears the way for designing novel MI-BCI training protocols, adapted to the profile of each user
