Investigating neorurals and squatters' lifestyles : personal and epistemological insights on participant observation and on the logic of ethnographic investigation
In my PhD thesis in Environmental Science, I used fieldwork amongst "neorural" communities in the Iberian Pyrenees, and direct participation amongst "okupas" (squatters) in Barcelona, I reflect on the two methodologies (ethnographic investigation and participant observation) that I used, and I discuss their application with respect to the style and to the particular context of the investigation. The experience of living within the Barcelona squatting community predated the decision to do the rural fieldwork; so, I argue, the distinction between observer and observed is purely artificial. I discuss the epistemological implications
Steps towards autonomy : autonomy of your thinking, autonomy from the money and autonomy from the system. The multicriterial choice of time : creative leisure time
This paper is one result of a "fieldwork" during a so-far 3 years long experience living in neorural communities in Barcelona, as part of the squat movement, and in the catalan Pyrenees. The only scientific evidence is that neorural people can live with an average of around 200 euros per month in Collserola, the natural park of Barcelona. The paper develops from a question: how is a neorural oikonomy2 originally conceived (discourse) and then materialized -by looking at a real indicator like Time, which is also easily comparable in money-time

Landscape Agroecology. The Dysfunctionalities of Industrial Agriculture and the Loss of the Circular Bioeconomy in the Barcelona Region, 1956-2009
The paper analyses how between 1956 and 2009 the agrarian metabolism of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region (BMR) has become less functional, losing circularity in biomass flows and in relationship to its landscape. We do so by adopting a Multi-Energy Return on Investment (EROI) and flow-fund (MuSIASEM) analyses and the nexus with landscape functional structure. The study of agricultural flows of Final Produce, Biomass Reused and External Inputs is integrated with that of land use, livestock, power capacity, and population changes between 1956 (at the beginning of agrarian industrialization) and 2009 (fully industrialized agriculture). A multi-scale analysis is conducted at the landscape scale (seven counties within the Barcelona metropolitan region) as well as for the functions deployed, within an agroecosystem, by the mutual interactions between its funds (landscape, land-uses, livestock, and farming population). A complex nexus between land, livestock, dietary patterns, and energy needs is shown; we conclude that, from the perspective of the circular bioeconomy the agrarian sector has gone worse hand in hand with the landscape functional structure. Therefore, a novel perspective in landscape agroecology is opened
A model for coupled electro-hydro-mechanical processes in fine grained soils accounting for gas generation and transport
A theoretical and numerical model is developed for the quantitative analysis of coupled processes taking place in active waste containment systems, such as electrokinetic barriers or fences, in which alow intensity DC current is circulated across the clay barrier to move polar and non-polar contaminants. A novel feature of the proposed approach is the allowance for the presence of air in the pore space. Under unsaturated conditions, all transport coefficients involved in the electrokinetic process are strongly dependent on the degree of saturation of pore liquid. In order to assess the predictive capability of the proposed theory and to appreciate the impact of gas production at the electrodes, a series of numerical simulations of simple onedimensional electrokinetic tests have been performed. The results of the simulations compare reasonably well with data obtained from laboratory experiments performed on an illitic clayey silt. The numerical results indicate that the impact of gas production at the electrodes can be significant, even in low-intensity and short-duration treatments
222Rn daughters influence on scaler mode of the ARGO-YBJ detector
The ARGO-YBJ experiment is a full coverage air shower array; its lowest
energy threshold is reached using the "scaler mode technique". Working in this
mode, the signals generated by any particle hitting each cluster are put in
coincidence every 150 ns and read by four independent scaler channels, giving
the counting rates of multiplicity \geq1, \geq2, \geq3 and \geq4 (C1, C2, C3
and C4, respectively). The study of these counting rates pointed out a
different behaviour of C1 respect to C2, C3 and C4, suggesting that C1 is
detecting not only cosmic rays. This work shows that the radon (222Rn) gamma
emitter daughters present in the ARGO-YBJ building air are contributing to C1
counts at the level of 1 Hz each Bq/m3 of radon. The uncertainty about this
contribution is great, because of the high variability of 222Rn concentration
and the building ventilation. The radon monitoring will allow the C1 correction
improving the sensitivity of the ARGO-YBJ experiment at its lowest energy
threshold.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of the 32nd International Cosmic Ray

The Loss of Landscape Ecological Functionality in the Barcelona Province (1956-2009) : Could Land-Use History Involve a Legacy for Current Biodiversity?
Could past land uses, and the land cover changes carried out, affect the current landscape capacity to maintain biodiversity? If so, knowledge of historical landscapes and their socio-ecological transitions would be useful for sustainable land use planning. We constructed a GIS dataset in 10 x 10 km UTM cells of the province of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) for 1956 and 2009 with the changing levels of farming disturbance exerted through the human appropriation of photosynthetic net primary production (HANPP), and a set of landscape ecology metrics to assess the impacts of the corresponding land-use changes. Then, we correlated them with the spatial distribution of total species richness (including vascular plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). The results allow us to characterize the main trends in changing landscape patterns and processes, and explore whether a land-use legacy of many complex agroforest mosaics maintained by the intermediate farming disturbance managed in 1956 could still exist, despite the decrease or disappearance of those mosaics before 2009 due to the combined impacts of agroindustrial intensification (meaning higher HANPP levels), forest transition (meaning lower HANPP levels) and urban sprawl. Statistical analysis reveals a positive impact of the number of larger, less disturbed forest patches, where many protected natural sites have been created in 1956-2009. However, it also confirms that this result has not only been driven by conservation policies and that the distribution of species richness is currently correlated with the maintenance of intermediate levels of HANPP. This suggests that both land-sharing and land-sparing approaches to biodiversity conservation may have played a synergistic role owing to the legacy of complex land cover mosaics of former agricultural landscapes that are now under a serious threat
Voltammetric characterization of gold-based bimetallic (AuPt; AuPd; AuAg) nanoparticles
Bimetallic nanoparticles are nowadays some of the most promising materials for catalytic, electrocatalytic and electroanalytical applications thanks to their novel optical, catalytic, magnetic, and sensing properties. Such novel features, often different and enhanced with respect to the monometallic counterparts, make these systems good candidates to be conveniently applied in a wide range of fields. The possibility to obtain different kinds of bimetallic composites (in terms of composition, structure, metal loading, morphology, etc.) goes in parallel with the need of powerful and accurate characterization tools. Among the commonly involved techniques like Optical Spectroscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), also the more powerful Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) and Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) are widely used. However, these analytical tools present some drawbacks in terms of high costs and low accessibility. In this context, electrochemistry and particularly Cyclic Voltammetry, is here proposed as an alternative, low cost, easy to use and simple characterization technique.
The possibility to use electrochemical methods to study the final structure of bimetallic nanocomposites was already demonstrated in the Literature [1-2], but there is still lack of information on how such systems change and evolve in time and after aging periods. Therefore, Cyclic Voltammetry is here used, as a complementary technique to HR-TEM and EXAFS not only to investigate the structure of alloyed or core-shell gold-based (Au-Pt; Au-Pd; Au-Ag) systems (by studying the quantity and type of metals present in the materials), but also to elucidate the evolution and growth in time of such bimetallic samples. Time evolution characterization allows to control the morphology and to fix it at the desired point.
Finally, the characterized gold-based nanocomposites are used in electrochemical sensing and electrocatalytic applications. A strong improvement in the response, in terms of higher peak currents and electrocatalytic effects, of the bimetallic systems with respect to the monometallic counterparts is evidenced, due to the intimate contact between the two metals, which is responsible of synergistic effects. Also, the effects of an eventual carbonaceous support on the properties of the metal nanoparticles and the possible synergistic effects between composites and supports are investigated [3].

Use of the iliac-outlet and iliac-inlet combined views in percutaneous posterior column retrograde screw fixation
Posterior column fractures are common acetabular injuries. Although displaced fractures require open reduction and fixation, undisplaced patterns may benefit from percutaneous screw fixation. The combination of iliac oblique with inlet and outlet views offers an intuitive and panoramic rendering of the bony corridor into the posterior column; lateral cross table view completes the sequence of fluoroscopic projections. Herein we describe the use of outlet/inlet iliac views and a detailed procedure for percutaneous retrograde posterior column screw fixation
Depression, obesity and their comorbidity during pregnancy : effects on the offspring's mental and physical health
Depression and obesity represent two of the most common complications during pregnancy and are associated with severe health risks for both the mother and the child. Although several studies have analysed the individual effects of depression or obesity on the mothers and their children, the effects associated with the co-occurrence of both disorders have so far been poorly investigated. The relationship between depression and obesity is very complex and it is still unclear whether maternal depression leads to obesity or vice versa. It is well known that the intrauterine environment plays an important role in mediating the effects of both depression and obesity in the mother on the fetal programming, increasing the child's risk to develop negative outcomes.Peer reviewe
