    Enforcing the non-negativity constraint and maximum principles for diffusion with decay on general computational grids

    In this paper, we consider anisotropic diffusion with decay, and the diffusivity coefficient to be a second-order symmetric and positive definite tensor. It is well-known that this particular equation is a second-order elliptic equation, and satisfies a maximum principle under certain regularity assumptions. However, the finite element implementation of the classical Galerkin formulation for both anisotropic and isotropic diffusion with decay does not respect the maximum principle. We first show that the numerical accuracy of the classical Galerkin formulation deteriorates dramatically with increase in the decay coefficient for isotropic medium and violates the discrete maximum principle. However, in the case of isotropic medium, the extent of violation decreases with mesh refinement. We then show that, in the case of anisotropic medium, the classical Galerkin formulation for anisotropic diffusion with decay violates the discrete maximum principle even at lower values of decay coefficient and does not vanish with mesh refinement. We then present a methodology for enforcing maximum principles under the classical Galerkin formulation for anisotropic diffusion with decay on general computational grids using optimization techniques. Representative numerical results (which take into account anisotropy and heterogeneity) are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed formulation

    Stock Exchanges and Issuers: A Changing Relationship

    The nature of the relation between stock exchanges and firms seeking a listing has changed considerably over the past decades. In this paper, we argue that the relationship has lost most of its historic complexity and has almost been reduced to a standardized contract in the sense that there are few contractual properties distinguishing listing on different exchanges apart from granting access to a specific liquidity pool. Analyzing the actual specifications of listing agreements at five major stock exchanges, we demonstrate that the contractual features are converging towards a standardized agreement. Furthermore, we show that some of the functions formerly fulfilled by exchanges are now performed by other institutions. We analyze whether these changes are reflected by policy makers in their efforts to create integrated European capital markets.Die Beziehung zwischen Börsen und Eigenkapitalemittenten hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten fundamental verĂ€ndert. In diesem Beitrag argumentieren wir, dass diese Beziehung einer standardisierten Vertragsbeziehung gleicht, die ihre historische KomplexitĂ€t weitgehend verloren hat. WĂ€hrend Börsen in der Vergangenheit unterschiedlich gestaltete Listinganforderungen an Unternehmen gestellt und durchgesetzt haben, ist heute ihr wesentliches Differenzierungsmerkmal die LiquiditĂ€t der gehandelten Aktien. Eine Untersuchung der Listinganforderungen von fĂŒnf bedeutenden Börsen zeigt, dass die wichtigsten Vertragsbestandteile des Abkommens zwischen Emmittent und Börse weitgehend vereinheitlicht sind. Wir zeigen weiterhin, dass neue Institutionen wie etwa nationale Börsenaufsichtsbehörden einige der frĂŒher von Börsen wahrgenommenen Aufgaben ĂŒbernommen haben. Abschließend untersuchen wir, ob und in welchem Maße diese VerĂ€nderungen in den gegenwĂ€rtigen BemĂŒhungen zur Schaffung integrierter europĂ€ischer KapitalmĂ€rkte berĂŒcksichtigt werden

    Share and enjoy: anatomical models database-generating and sharing cardiovascular model data using web services

    Sharing data between scientists and with clinicians in cardiac research has been facilitated significantly by the use of web technologies. The potential of this technology has meant that information sharing has been routinely promoted through databases that have encouraged stakeholder participation in communities around these services. In this paper we discuss the Anatomical Model Database (AMDB) (Gianni et al. Functional imaging and modeling of the heart. Springer, Heidelberg, 2009; Gianni et al. Phil Trans Ser A Math Phys Eng Sci 368:3039–3056, 2010) which both facilitate a database-centric approach to collaboration, and also extends this framework with new capabilities for creating new mesh data. AMDB currently stores cardiac geometric models described in Gianni et al. (Functional imaging and modelling of the heart. Springer, Heidelberg, 2009), a number of additional cardiac models describing geometry and functional properties, and most recently models generated using a web service. The functional models represent data from simulations in geometric form, such as electrophysiology or mechanics, many of which are present in AMDB as part of a benchmark study. Finally, the heartgen service has been added for producing left or bi-ventricle models derived from binary image data using the methods described in Lamata et al. (Med Image Anal 15:801–813, 2011). The results can optionally be hosted on AMDB alongside other community-provided anatomical models. AMDB is, therefore, a unique database storing geometric data (rather than abstract models or image data) combined with a powerful web service for generating new geometric models

    Short-term Herding of Institutional Traders: New Evidence from the German Stock Market

    This paper employs a new and comprehensive data set to investigate short-term herding behavior of institutional investors. Using data of all transactions made by financial institutions in the German stock market, we show that herding behavior occurs on a daily basis. However, in contrast to longer-term herding measures obtained from quarterly data, results based on daily data do not indicate that short-term herding tends to be more pronounced in small capitalized stocks or in times of market stress. Moreover, we find that herding measures based on anony- mous transactions can lead to misleading results about the behavior of institutional investors during the recent financial crisis

    Turning heads:The impact of political reform on the professional role, identity and recruitment of head teachers in Wales

    This article considers the professional work, identity and recruitment of head teachers (HTs) in Wales. Drawing on the sociology of professions, the article illustrates how intensive educational policy reform post‐2011 has restricted HTs’ professional agency and re‐orientated the head teacher role towards organisational professionalism. Drawing on semi‐structured interviews (n=30) with both head and deputy head teachers, the article argues that issues with the recruitment and retention of HTs in Wales can, in part, be explained by the promotion of managerial and technicist approaches to professional practice. This role reconfiguration is the result of myriad and, at times, overlapping accountability mechanisms. The article illustrates how these changes to HT professional roles and identity are more intense within a small education system where HTs had, traditionally, enjoyed an elite professional status. To ameliorate these issues, the article proposes policy initiatives which the Welsh Government could introduce to foster the agency of HTs within a revised professional framework for educational leadership in Wales

    ActEarly: a City Collaboratory approach to early promotion of good health and wellbeing

    Economic, physical, built, cultural, learning, social and service environments have a profound effect on lifelong health. However, policy thinking about health research is dominated by the ‘biomedical model’ which promotes medicalisation and an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment at the expense of prevention. Prevention research has tended to focus on ‘downstream’ interventions that rely on individual behaviour change, frequently increasing inequalities. Preventive strategies often focus on isolated leverage points and are scattered across different settings. This paper describes a major new prevention research programme that aims to create City Collaboratory testbeds to support the identification, implementation and evaluation of upstream interventions within a whole system city setting. Prevention of physical and mental ill-health will come from the cumulative effect of multiple system-wide interventions. Rather than scatter these interventions across many settings and evaluate single outcomes, we will test their collective impact across multiple outcomes with the goal of achieving a tipping point for better health. Our focus is on early life (ActEarly) in recognition of childhood and adolescence being such critical periods for influencing lifelong health and wellbeing
