In How Ten Global Cities Take On Homelessness: Innovations That Work, Linda Gibbs, Jay Bainbridge, Muzzy Rosenblatt and Tamiru Mammo explore some of the key challenges faced by urban spaces in tackling homelessness and outline the successes of ten global cities when it comes to addressing its causes and consequences. This book is a valuable resource that not only identifies the multiple governance and practical issues involved in solving homelessness, but also provides specific examples and evidence from many different settings about what can be done to overcome it, writes Gerald Koessl. Access to Justice for Disadvantaged Communities

Access to justice for all, regardless of the ability to pay, has been a core democratic value. But this basic human right has come under threat through wider processes of restructuring, with an increasingly market-led approach to the provision of welfare. Professionals and volunteers in Law Centres in Britain are struggling to provide legal advice and access to welfare rights to disadvantaged communities. Drawing upon original research, this unique study explores how strategies to safeguard these vital services might be developed in ways that strengthen rather than undermine the basic ethics and principles of public service provision. The book explores how such strategies might strengthen the position of those who provide, as well as those who need, public services, and ways to empower communities to work more effectively with professionals and progressive organisations in the pursuit of rights and social justice agendas more widely

Union Strategies in Confronting Dis-Industrialization. The Automotive Industry in the 1990s, Córdoba - Argentina

The result of the process is a regressive industrial restructuring characterized by the dis-industrialization of the local textile industrial. The strategy of all the participating actors, and specially that developed by labor union agents, allows researchers to interpret some of the changes generated in the resulting terrain of this process. In order to consider union strategies, the elements on which they are based, and on which union power is based, are reviewed in this article. The consequences of union activity in relation to the implementation of the flexible production model and the fragmentation and dispersion of the work are also analyzed

Changing Places, Changing Lives: assessing the Impact of Housing Association Regeneration

    Get PDF
The Changing Places, Changing Lives research into L&Q’s ‘community impact’ demonstrates the unique position of housing associations as social landlords. It examines seven neighbourhoods, which span two periods in urban governance: the area-based initiatives of the last Labour government, which aimed to regenerate and ‘renew’ specific neighbourhoods characterised by large swathes of public housing; and the current housing policy of the coalition government, which places an emphasis on decentralisation and localism (rather than centralised spatial strategies). With the demise of regeneration monies, such as the Single Regeneration Budget and New Deal for Communities, and the considerable cuts to the budgets of local authority services, the ability of social landlords to attract mobile capital, nurture indigenous capacity and talent and provide community resources at this time is particularly significant as they shape urban neighbourhoods

Time-dependent radio emission from evolving jets

We investigated the time-dependent radiative and dynamical properties of light supersonic jets launched into an external medium, using hydrodynamic simulations and numerical radiative transfer calculations. These involved various structural models for the ambient media, with density profiles appropriate for galactic and extragalactic systems. The radiative transfer formulation took full account of emission, absorption, re-emission, Faraday rotation and Faraday conversion explicitly. High time-resolution intensity maps were generated, frame-by-frame, to track the spatial hydrodynamical and radiative properties of the evolving jets. Intensity light curves were computed via integrating spatially over the emission maps. We apply the models to jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN). From the jet simulations and the time-dependent emission calculations we derived empirical relations for the emission intensity and size for jets at various evolutionary stages. The temporal properties of jet emission are not solely consequences of intrinsic variations in the hydrodynamics and thermal properties of the jet. They also depend on the interaction between the jet and the ambient medium. The interpretation of radio jet morphology therefore needs to take account of environmental factors. Our calculations have also shown that the environmental interactions can affect specific emitting features, such as internal shocks and hotspots. Quantification of the temporal evolution and spatial distribution of these bright features, together with the derived relations between jet size and emission, would enable us to set constraints on the hydrodynamics of AGN and the structure of the ambient medium.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, MNRAS in press

Magnetic field structure of relativistic jets without current sheets

We present an analytical class of equilibrium solutions for the structure of relativistic sheared and rotating magnetized jets that contain no boundary current sheets. We demonstrate the overall dynamical stability of these solutions and, most importantly, a better numerical resistive stability than the commonly employed force-free structures which inevitably require the presence of dissipative surface currents. The jet is volumetrically confined by the external pressure, with no pressure gradient on the surface. We calculate the expected observed properties of such jets. Given the simplicity of these solution we suggest them as useful initial conditions for relativistic jet simulations.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, Accepted by MNRA

    3. El campo. Problemas, debilidades o limitantes estructurales en Colombia

    No full text
