    Disentangling the Fairness & Discrimination and Synergy Perspectives on Diversity Climate: Moving the Field Forward

    We provide a theory-driven review of empirical research in diversity climate to identify a number of problems with the current state of the science as well as a research agenda to move the field forward. The core issues we identify include (a) the fact that diversity climate is typically treated as unidimensional, whereas diversity research would suggest that there are two major perspectives that could be reflected in diversity climate—efforts to ensure equal employment opportunity and the absence of discrimination versus efforts to create synergy from diversity; (b) a tendency to let the level of analysis (individual psychological climate or shared team or organizational climate) be dictated by convenience rather than by careful theoretical consideration, thus sidestepping key issues for research concerning the causes and consequences of the sharedness, or lack thereof, of diversity climate perceptions; and (c) the tendency to include diversity attitudes and other nonclimate elements in climate measures even though they are different from climate both conceptually and in their antecedents and consequences. The research agenda we advance suggests a need both for different operationalizations and for new research questions in diversity climate, diversity, and relational demography research

    Workplace Contextual Supports for LGBT Employees: A Review, Meta‐Analysis, and Agenda for future Research

    The past decade has witnessed a rise in the visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. This has resulted in some organizational researchers focusing their attention on workplace issues facing LGBT employees. While empirical research has been appropriately focused on examining the impact of workplace factors on the work lives of LGBT individuals, no research has examined these empirical relationships cumulatively. The purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive review and meta‐analysis of the outcomes associated with three workplace contextual supports (formal LGBT policies and practices, LGBT‐supportive climate, and supportive workplace relationships) and to compare the relative influence of these workplace supports on outcomes. Outcomes were grouped into four categories: (a) work attitudes, (b) psychological strain, (c) disclosure, and (d) perceived discrimination. Results show that supportive workplace relationships were more strongly related to work attitudes and strain, whereas LGBT supportive climate was more strongly related to disclosure and perceived discrimination compared to the other supports. Our findings also revealed a number of insights concerning the measurement, research design, and sample characteristics of the studies in the present review. Based on these results, we offer an agenda for future research

    Recognising Victimhood: Lessons from the International Criminal Court and Mass Claim Programmes for the Compensation Procedure Parallel to the Trial of International Crimes in the Netherlands

    In the Netherlands, the Dutch criminal court in The Hague (hereinafter: ‘Netherlands International Crimes Court’ or ‘NIC court’) is assigned to try international crimes, and to provide compensation to victims of such crimes. Whereas it has specific criminal laws at its disposal to try international crimes, it applies ‘regular’ Dutch civil law to assess claims for compensation. Yet compensation for international crimes entails challenges that are quite different from domestic crimes: international crimes are normally committed against a large number of victims, and frequently result in bodily harm. This article argues that the NIC court will most likely rule a large number of claims for compensation inadmissible, as a consequence of which victims cannot benefit from the advantages inherent in the award of compensation within the criminal process. It then explores the adjudicative and reparatory standards that the International Criminal Court and mass claim programmes have applied to simplify both the adjudication of a large number of claims, and the calculation of a large number of instances of bodily damage. It is submitted that adoption by the NIC court of international reparatory standards could facilitate the assessment of a large number of civil claims within the criminal process, without prejudice to the legitimate interests of the defendant for an adequate procedure. However, these standards require the NIC court to strike a new balance between tailor-made compensation and symbolic compensation, and thereby between corrective justice and restorative justice

    Wirkung des Tumorsuppressors Arf auf Miz1 und Sumoylierung von Myc und Miz1

    Upon oncogenic stress, the tumor suppressor Arf can induce irreversible cell cycle arrest or apoptosis, depending on the oncogenic insult. In this study, it could be shown that Arf interacts with Myc and the Myc-associated zinc-finger protein Miz1 to facilitate repression of genes involved in cell adhesion. Formation of a DNA-binding Arf/Myc/Miz1 complex disrupts interaction of Miz1 with its coactivator nucleophosmin and induces local heterochromatinisation, causing cells to lose attachment and undergo anoikis. The assembly of the complex relies on Myc, which might explain why high Myc levels trigger apoptosis and not cell cycle arrest in the Arf response. This mechanism could play an important role in eliminating cells harboring an oncogenic mutation. Arf furthermore induces sumoylation of Miz1 at a specific lysine by repressing the desumoylating enzyme Senp3. A sumoylation-deficient mutant of Miz1 however does not show phenotypic differences under the chosen experimental conditions. Myc can also be modified by Sumo by multisumoylation at many different lysines, which is unaffected by Arf. The exact mechanism and effect of this modification however stays unsolved.Der Tumorsuppressor Arf wird durch onkogenen Stress induziert und kann entweder einen irreversiblen Zellzyklusarrest oder Apoptose auslösen. In dieser Arbeit konnte gezeigt werden, dass Arf mit Myc und dem Myc-interagierenden Zinkfingerprotein Miz1 assoziiert und dadurch Gene der ZelladhĂ€sion reprimiert. Die Ausbildung eines DNA-bindenden Arf/Myc/Miz1 Komplexes verhindert eine Interaktion von Miz1 mit seinem Koaktivator Nucleophosmin und führt zur lokalen Ausbildung von Heterochromatin, was zum Ablösen der Zellen und schließlich zur Anoikis führt. Die Komplexbildung setzt die Beteiligung von Myc voraus, was erklĂ€ren könnte warum hohe Mengen an Myc über Arf Apoptose und nicht Zellzyklusarrest auslösen. Dieser Mechanismus könnte eine wichtige Rolle bei der Eliminierung von Zellen mit einer onkogenen Mutation spielen. Arf induziert darüber hinaus die Sumoylierung von Miz1 an einem bestimmten Lysin indem es das desumoylierende Enzyme Senp3 inhibiert. Eine Mutante von Miz1 die nicht mehr sumoyliert werden kann zeigt jedoch in den durchgeführten Untersuchungen keinen anderen PhĂ€notyp als Wildtyp Miz1. Myc kann ebenfalls an vielen verschiedenen Lysinen mit Sumo modifiziert werden, wobei Arf jedoch keine Rolle spielt. Der genaue Mechanismus und Effekt dieser Modifikation konnte jedoch nicht geklĂ€rt werden
